It won't work well unless you have the rudder angle sensor installed I tried to avoid getting down below to install that rudder angle sensor and the unit just didn't work right until I spent many hours in a cramped space and got it done been fine ever since. Check the belt in the housing that is attached to the wheel. You have to remove the housing from the wheel and pry it open. Chances are, by your description, that the belt is worn and slipping. Replacement belts can be found online. Make sure you get the right one. Raymarine made a black housin
