I know it has probably been done by others but I am not sure that I would
ever let my ST 4000 plus steer a course unattended based on transfer data
from my chart plotter.

My wheel pilot works fine but I always keep an eye on it and the course
ahead, in bad weather it steers while I sit under the dodger watching ahead
and on my hand held gps chartplotter backup.I use the Garmin 60Cx as backup
with Garmin bluecharts installed. I do not trust completely unattended
steering

Umm... not sure about the st4000 it should also have a button kinda like a
NAV that will tell it to listen to the broadcast course to steer.
Everything else sounds like you have it.

Though something to consider is that the 0183 standard is for a total of 4
wires to send and recieve. RX+GND and TX+GND. I didn't see where you
mentioned all those wires...sounded like too few.

No, The guy at Garmin said that the echo50s I purchased is compatible with
0183 and should work fine.

Wire color to color and it should be fine. it also speaks the 2000. I called
raymarine and they said the difference in in the version of the 0183 in my
equipment. the older version is vr 3.0 the newer version is 3.5 After
giving him some numbers he decided I had the 3.5 version of the 1083.

I just could not find any instructions on haw to work it after it was hooked
up.

So now, If I understand you correctly. I first have to create a route then
to start navigating a course or to a way-point. That should start
broadcasting a course to steer signal. then I in-gauge the st4000 by
pressing the +10 and -10 at the same time and it should start taking
direction from the Garmin?

does this sound correct?

I guess I jumped the assumption gun on the last responce. You question is
too vague. I should have started with, "What protocol is the garmin using?
What protocol is the autohelm using? What protocal are your masthead
instruments using? If you want them to all talk together then you will
probably find yourself needing a multiplexer/converter. The older stuff is
probably working with NMEA 0183 (listen to 1 - RX, talk to 3 - TX). The
garmin is probably on NMEA 2000 which has a handy daisy chain feature which
makes things real easy. The way I understand it each component can just put
a message on the line and all the others can pick it up. The problem is
they 0183 and 2000 don't talk to one another without a converter. If this
is the case then i think you need to multiplex all your 0183 devices to a
2000 signal. I believe you can find combiner/converters for about $400.

Got it all wired in today and I need some help.
I have an older model Autohelm St4000 and a new Echo50s Garmin.\I have the
blue wire from the control head going to the blue wire on the Garmin I have
the red wire to the inst switch and a common ground to the batt.
I have the baud rate set to 4800.
Here goes the dumbest question I have asked.

How do I get it to steer the boat? The st400 when in gauged will respond to
the control head. How do I get it to steer a course?

Thanks so much for your help. one other question. IO have a transducer at
the top of my mast with App and True Wind / Wind Speed, I have a gauge that
I want to use in one location but I want the information to go into the
Garmin as well.It will take the information according to the instruction I
just don't know how to get all of the inputs in the one last remaining brown
wire on the garmin?

Thanks again for your help
