>Not to be picky, but your last step should not be required every time you shut >off the power. The settings are retained in non-volatile memory. The settings are saved, and should last over the winter. Some of the older units are losing their ability to save into non-volatile memory. Also, I think, if at start up when the non-volatile memory is read if a read error or checksum error is detected the unit drops back to defaults. >NMEA 0183 is essentially a one wire system if you use the 12 volt ground. It >has data + and ground, which is 99% of the time common with 12 volt ground. The spec calls for RS-422, which is a two wire differential signal of +/- 6 volts. In theory the differential pair could be decoupled from ground, and would be if someone is using a handheld GPS running on batteries. Likely 99% of the time the manufacture is using RS-232 or is coupled to ground. Just mentioning it for the other 1%, those poor guys that do it correctly and find it has compatibility issues. A further note, if someone in the cabin happens to place something magnetic near the fluxgate compass while you are underway with autopilot it can cause a sudden change in course.
