I guess I jumped the assumption gun on the last responce.  You question is
too vague.  I should have started with, "What protocol is the garmin
using?  What protocol is the autohelm using?  What protocal are your
masthead instruments using?  If you want them to all talk together then you
will probably find yourself needing a multiplexer/converter.  The older
stuff is probably working with NMEA 0183 (listen to 1 - RX, talk to 3 -
TX).  The garmin is probably on NMEA 2000 which has a handy daisy chain
feature which makes things real easy.  The way I understand it each
component can just put a message on the line and all the others can pick it
up.  The problem is they 0183 and 2000 don't talk to one another without a
converter.  If this is the case then i think you need to multiplex all your
0183 devices to a 2000 signal.  I believe you can find combiner/converters
for about $400.
