Not doable. Skype has turned off the support for Symbian skype and all old
version that use that protocol. Sorry about that. That is why Skype doesn’t
work on Symbian phones. This has probably been like this for at least a year
give or take a few months.

The E71 doesn't have an HASH key. It is a qwerty keyboard phone and not a
numeric keypad phone. I know you can do it through the settings but being I
don't own that phone can't tell you where to find it in the settings or what
key to press to be able to turn it off.

Why don't you try doing an *#7780# to do a soft reset on the phone; No

When you say it will not read characters! Do you mean it will not read
anything that you type in as far as what you are typing?
What does UC stand for?
Does it read the web page as far as you are able to jump by link, headings
etc?
