I've had a Garmin 168 sounder mounted about 4" forward of the binnacle
mounted Richie Globemaster on my 38 since 2004. When I swung the compass in
2010, I took about 10 degrees of deviation out of the compass, but I doubt
that the plotter/sounder had anything to do with it since the deviation was

Bicycle chain lube would work great for the gear and chain in a pedestal. It is
designed to get into the pins and lubricate the chain, and you are right that
it is resistant to moisture (don’t know about salt water though) and doesn’t
pick up dirt. But the Teflon grease is for the gear cages on
cockpit combing. The excess line is coiled and stored in a
cleat mounted to the back of the wooden bracket on which I keep the dinghy
motor.

Does anyone have an idea what one of these puppies costs? I looked in an
Edson price list and found that a plain old carbon fiber Pro Series 40"
wheel lists for over $5 grand. Something tells me you could buy at least one
79 Landfall 38 for the price of one of these wheels.
