I've had a Garmin 168 sounder mounted about 4" forward of the binnacle
mounted Richie Globemaster on my 38 since 2004. When I swung the compass in
2010, I took about 10 degrees of deviation out of the compass, but I doubt
that the plotter/sounder had anything to do with it since the deviation was
present whether the plotter was turned on or not.

I tested the Garmin 541s that I received as a Christmas present in the same
location before I mounted it. The Garmin installation instructions specify a
"safe compass distance" of 36" for the 541s. I cound discern no effect on
the compass when the GPS was turned on. When I did the wiring I was careful
th twist the power and ground wires to minimize induced magnetic field, just
to be on the safe side. I pretty much did nothing about the NEMA wires,
since they carry negligible current and I expect no significant magnetic
effects.

Based on my experience, I really don't see why the manufacturers have a
caution about "safe compass distance" in the instructions.

Subject: Stus-List Mounting chartplotter near magnetic compass

I've been following this forum for over a year - all good stuff! Now I need
some advice. I want to mount a small chartplotter (5" or 6" screen) at the
binnacle, which would place it very close to my magnetic compass. Seems all
the models on the market today - Raymarine, Garmin, Standard Horizon, etc -
require a separation between the two, anywhere from 12" up to 3 ft. Makes
it rather difficult to accomplish on a 30ft boat. I couldn't be the first
sailor to face this dilemma, so any ideas or suggestions would be most
welcome. Thanks!
