Charlie;

When I added the radar arch and new stern railings to Imzadi in 2008/2009,
it was time to replace my 30 year old lifelines. I determined the lengths I
needed (somewhat shorter because of the new arrangement at the stern) and
gave the old wires to the guys at Captain Sam's so they could match the
diameters of the upper and lower. They made new lifelines for me with swaged
ends to match my existing turnbuckles. I think the cost was between $200 and
$250 for all 4 lifelines.

The lines they made were actually a couple of inches longer than I really
needed (I may have measured wrong, or they left a bit extra) and the new
lifelines didn't tension up as much as I had planned. Which actually turned
out to be an advantage when I installed new stanchion bases and moved my
stanchions out to the toenail in 2010, and needed slightly longer lifelines.

West Marine's rigging shop can also match your existing lifelines with
either covered or uncovered line at a pretty reasonable cost. I'm sure
Deaton's or Sailcraft can do it as well - but everything seems to cost more
in Oriental than it does in Washington.

Bill Doar said he thought about synthetic lifelines when he changed the
standing rigging on Advent II to PBO, but went with stainless (uncoated
IIRC) because of the limited life of synthetic and the need to renew the
splices every year or so to maintain the tension of the lifelines.

Subject: Stus-List SS wire or line for lifelines

I am considering replacing my 17 year old lifelines (wire with white plastic
cover) this year.

I like the idea of bare SS wire (long lifetime) although the hassle of the
fittings, swaging, etc. is not appealing.

OTOH, high tech line is begining to be used which eliminates the fittings,
swaging, etc. but it likely has a limited life exposed to the

North Carolina sun every day.

Opinions and especially experience from the list would be appreciated.

TIA,
