I have a 38 year old 38 mk1. Bought her 11 years ago for $33k, and have spent another 30 or so on remits, upgrades, added cabinets, added systems, etc. Plus, of course the normal year to year stuff like bottom jobs and replacement running rigging.
Two days ago the Admiral and I were aboard a newish Benneteau 42. Admiral liked the two heads, the walk in shower, the centerline queen in the aft cabin. But from my perspective the boat is 5 or 6 times what I have invested, actually has less storage space, and with roller main and 110 headsail it sails like a pig. Nice condo on the water. Well built one from everything I saw. But I still like my good old boat, even with the maintenance that implies, and having $150k still in the bank.
