None of our generators or any one I've seen let's you adjust voltage. The ones we have are all TroyBilt-ish with Briggs engines. The UPS did switch to the generator when I lowered the choke ~10%. But it would not use the generator at full open and the generator sounded like it was bogging down.

Not sure what the generator is but most have the ability to adjust the output voltage and frequency. If you have the option you could just crank the generator output voltage up enough to make the UPS happy. Note that is done by adjusting the excitation voltage, not the speed of the engine.
