Use o non-US. -- []'s, francisco m. neto "Calling EMACS an editor is like calling the Earth a hunk of dirt." -- Chris DiBona on Dirt (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". (There is lots of "why you > should use Linux" but not much of "why I use Debian rather than > something else".) Okay, then. Here is how it happened to me. I started using Linux just about 1 1/2 year ago, I was interested because, amongst a lot of Windoze NT machines in the computing room at the Physics Institute (where I study), I saw some displays with a "strange" screen (it was xdm) I had never seen before. A friend of mine, who was used to that system, told me it was another OS called Linux, that it was free (he told he that meant I would not pay anything to use it, and any copy would be perfectly legal). I was used to the Windoze world, and so I didn't believe it. And I believed it even less when he told me it would not give me those blue screens... Anyway, I decided to give it a try (oh, the old times when I thought computers could not be fun...). At first, it impressed me by the visual style of the thing, I just loved all those configurations I could set for it (I fell in love with Afterstep :-P). I didn't know the distros existed yet. The system where I got my first account was a Debian Slink, and thanks to its administrator it was well-configured, and that gave me a good first impression. And I got really impressed when, after 6 months, it had never let me down. In the previous 6 months, using NT, the system failed me about 5 times a week... Some time later, I began using other distributions and installing Linux on some machines. The first thing I tried was Conectiva Linux, a brazilian "distribution", that in fact was just copied from (ack!) Red Hat (don't even try that thing, unless you want to have some problem). Then I tried Mandrake, Red Hat (which I just HATED), Corel, Caldera... anything impressed me like Debian. Anyway, if you want to know why I use (and STRONGLY recommend) Debian, here it goes: 1) If Linux is already a thousand times more stable than "that" OS, Debian is even more stable than any of them; 2) Even if the affirmation that Debian MAY not have up-to-date packages, the dpkg/apt-get stuff is the best package managing system ever, and that makes easy to make a ultra-stable server and a development desktop-box; 3) I feel comfortable using it - its structure is the one that works with me (I can navigate without any problem in the system) 4) It follows strictly the GNU philosophy: anything is more FREE than Debian. Sorry if my english is not the best in the world. Also, these are only my opinions. -- francisco m. neto (a.k.a ikari himura keiichi) Linux User #192809 ICQ #78493934 http://socrates.if.usp.br/~einstein "Toke au kokoro ga, watashi o kowasu" -- Ayanami Rei

It also has lots of configuration options, you can define the bitrate of the mp3's, all the information that goes in the id3 tag, the format of the filename, and it also creates a m3u playlist! You can also determine the nice leval, max number of encoding processes, and many other performance options. I use it even for playing audio cd's, it has a nice interface. If you use GNOME, it also gets integrated into it, since it uses GTK. For CD ripping and encoding, I see no option: cdparanoia and lame, the perfect combination. -- []'s, francisco m neto

Hi there, I'm implementing a NIS at work and some issues about device permissions ocurred to me. I'm willing to give permission to users to use the sound hardware on the local machines. However, it's too much out-of-date. 2.4 gb are pretty good for win95 and whatever application you want to run under it. For the debian partition, I suggest you create three partitions: one for system, one for home and one for swap. The swap one may be small, something about 128 Mb. The size of the other ones is up to you, depending on what kind of installation you are planning to do and what kind of stuff you're gonna store on your home. The point is that, when you do an 'apt-get update', it will update the package database for the newest version of X - version 3.3. When you do 'apt-get upgrade', it will try to install that version of XFree, and it will conflict with your new installation of XF4 that supposedly doesn't exist, and, at the same time, it won't find the XFree that the database says is there. I don't know what kind of problem it could give if you did an 'apt-get install task-gnome' (or something like that), but I guess it *could* work. X won't start in woody
Hi there, I've been trying to install woody on a PIII with a SiS 620 graphics chipset for the last 6 hours. Everything was working fine while I was using potato, but when I made a 'apt-get dist-upgrade' it began to complain about a lot of dependencies, and ended up saying that 'there was a problem while processing the package xlibs-4.1.0.???.deb'. After half an hour trying to understand what was happening, I decided to make a fresh instalation of woody. Here is where the problem arrives: everything went OK, except for X. The graphics chipset was working fine with XF3, but it won't work properly under XF4. I know that the chipset (SiS 620) IS supported by both XF3 and XF4. Anyone knows how to solve the problem, or, even better (I think), how to get XF3 to be installed on woody the right way (so other packages that depend on it won't complain)? Thanks, -- []'s, francisco m neto

Even before I patched the kernel for supemount > under Debian I could not mount audio CDs (got the message "wrong > fstype, bad option blablalabla..), while data cds are mounted fine. The main differente between audio cds and data cds is that data cds consist of 1's and 0's, and audio cds don't. In data cds each bit has two possible orientations: one of those is 1, and the other one is 0. Audio cds doesn't even have bits: they consist of a sequence of "bits" that have orientations that will reflect the laser this or that way, thus leading to the digitalized audio generation. Probably there's a lot of wrong concepts on this "explanation", but I think it shows the basic idea. -- []'s, francisco m. neto (a.k.a Fujikuro) ICQ # 78493934 "Toke au kokoro ga, watashi o kowasu." -- Ayanami Rei

I'm not sure about apt but you can check the tracker page for that package. It will give you the name of the maintainer and clicking on the 'DMD' link will take you to their dashboard. In the dashboard you can see all the packages that person is involved with. Cheers, -- Francisco M Neto

Hey there, I don't want to just add a meme here, but someone give this man a medal. The above is the best advice anyone could get in regards to upgrading to testing or not. > Just my €0.02 Honestly worth a lot more. There are a lot of people that are not that familiar with Debian, and sometimes it's comprehensible that they don't look for search engines right away; a lot of times the answers that come up on a search apply to derivatives. Ubuntu is so ubiquitous these days that I've seen plenty of people that just follow instructions meant for it, but under Debian. So it's (from a certain point of view) comendable that they come to this list instead. After all this is _the_ Debian User Group; and it's sad that sometimes they are met with less-than-tolerant responses. Although I can completely understand (and to some extent, relate to) the way some people feel when a discussion list is sometimes treated as a support desk, a more welcoming response is more likely to create a more conscientious Debian user. That was MY €0.02. Cheers, Francisco signature.asc Description: PGP signature

No. I feel I should point out, though, that there are a number of advantages to this approach. Using sudo instead of logging in as root (or rather using su to get access to a root prompt) is a safer approach since it adds a layer of insurance against "accidents", not to mention every command is logged (which is good in any case, but mandatory in case of multi-user systems), avoids using the root shell and is overall safer agains hacking/cracking. Another one
I've posted another blog about my adventures with the Debian Release Cycle. Or, rather, how I'm hoping to estimate Buster's release date. Well... maybe? I mean, certain developers or maintainers may be aware of the release cycle and delay their uploads into unstable until after the new stable is released. In that case, Sid should experience an unusually high number of updates over the next few weeks. -- []'s, Francisco M Neto GPG: 4096R/D692FBF0 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
