yes, it is doing exactly what I suspected it was doing... instead of
ERASING everything the way that it is supposed to do it attempts to do a
RESTORE instead.
I think the number of partitions that you have is irrelevant. But for
this repro I had 4 linux partitions and one swap partition. Only
I used virtualbox to confirm the following
1) installer formats the disk = permissions are set correctly
2) install to an existing disk = it does not change the permissions for
that disk.

that I would expect when doing an INST

@alberto: so audio is considered to be non-essential in a consumer
computer??? I could see that being the case for servers, but
computers with gui interfaces ought to consider audio to be essential to
that experience, see for instance PC-98 spec.
I did eventually find a work-around for this

Every 5 seconds a new instance of xfce4-display is being launched, this makes
the computer unusable.
This started happening after a recent upgrade/update.
Prior to that upgrade/update the xfce4-display program was being
launched every time that power was added or removed fro
this occured with windows 2000, and I am pretty sure that it happened
exactly as described, but that was awhile ago I might have misremembered
something. It probably also depends on the specific sequence of the
partitions.
Windows 2000 has a very finicky file system. These days winows 2000 is
a
a new instance of xfce4-display is being launched every 5 seconds
an infinite number of instances of xfce4-display are being launched
this makes the computer UNUSABLE
this started happening on my computer after a recent upgrade, prior to that it
did not happen.

under moderate load temperature is around 81c
under high load (playing video inside a virtualbox) temperature hit
94c at which point I turned it off
I have tested this with all 3 of the radeon drivers, with no significant
difference.

the above data is from running on the flash drive, but I also get
similar results from Beta 1 installed with all updates.
also, on 12.10 I got similar results when running the generic kernel.
have not yet tried the generic kernel on 13.04 but would expect it will
behave the same based on experienc
