the only clear pattern is that the first time you try to do something such as 
"man less"  it took about 30 seconds to load....   but after that it loads from 
memory cache and is fast.  

on the other hand, firefox continues to stall with every page load even
on pages that have already been loaded.

Basically, any time that a program is run for the first time, it is very
slow to load but then runs at normal speed, and the second time that you
run the same program it loads very quickly..   However,  apt-get install
continues to have long stalls while unpacking and installing each app.


looking at the PATH showed nothing interesting, all of the folders exist and a 
directory listing was fast.  (except the first time the "ls" command was 
invoked it was slow.)
