I believe that the actual bug is that the CONFIG dialogs which popup are
not App Modal.
the specific problem I encountered is that the CONFIG dialog ends up
underneath something else (assuming you are doing other things will the
upgrade runs in the background) therefore you do not see it.
meanwhile the updater hangs waiting for you to respond to the CONFIG
request.
When you check on the status/progress of the updater it appears to be hung for
no discernable reason.
therefore you close it using the [X]
result: the same crash as bug #1209219
poking around you find the CONFIG dialog that was waiting for input from
you.... doh...
