libfaac (non-free) should have been obvious to me, it still begs the question
of what is the position on native aac encoding that was enabled in ffmpeg,
just 2 days later than the current source in karmic.

If you are splitting vlc into i386 and amd_64 packages then there is
no reason not to enable the dmo loader in i386
--enable-loader
And add appropriate define to vlc-nox.install

There's no reason not to enable globalhotkeys in vlc-1.0.2 for karmic
Just add libxcb-keysyms1-dev as a build depend and it will be
automatically enabled

again another useful feature missing in the karmic 1.0.2 package. I'm sure
those who use vlc for audio cd's would like the cddb data

If you were to remove librasero-media0 ( and by extension brasero and
rhythmbox) then the odds are your cd/dvd drive(s) will operate correctly
with no need to boot up with media inserted or mount media as root.

and just as a final note
restoring brasero and libbrasero-media0 to ver. 2.27.92-0ubuntu2
restores full functions of all cd/dvd drives and gksu nautilus is now
also functional, both from Alt+F2 (preferred method ) and terminal.
The only caveat to gksu ... is the drive(s) cannot be an an 'open'

Considering the long list of both feature enhancements and bug fixes
this should be seriously considered.
At present, though some progress has been made with dvd navigation,and
playback, totem is still inferior to the removed totem-xine and
seriously lags behind players such as vlc and mplayer.

Optical media with UDF/iso9660 filesytems is no longer being detected or
mounted when inserted. There is no activity shown in dmesg, and the
cdrom icon in computer will disappear once the media is inserted

I have reverted a fully updated a6 to libbrasero/brasero 2.27.92 and have
regained full and proper use of the cd/dvd drives.
Additionally the previously broken gksu nautilus is now fully functional both
from Alt+F2 and the terminal
The only caveat to use of gksu nautilus is the cd/dvd drive must
