and wrote it to a cd-rom. Booted the same computer identified in post
#94 and started the trial version option.

Roger, agreed. Besides, this is probably most likely a graphics driver
issue with regards to some of the work that is being done in the Linux
kernel (the modesetting and such). It is quite likely that it will take
the newer kernels to really address this issue anyway.

harddrive install of Ubuntu to be effecting the LiveCD version of
Ubuntu. From how I read your observations, the LiveCD session freezes
whenever you set the visual effects to Normal. The same is also true

I have suffered from this same issue with my IBM R51 Laptop. The
solution I am going with for now is to remove "Compiz" completely. I
would rather have a functioning machine over one with fancy graphics,
but doesn't boot. So far so good:

Lastly, could you see if disabling your Compiz settings help you at all?

After upgrading to 9.10 the system hangs few seconds after finishing starting
up.
I removed compiz Samba and any other application that I believed could cause
the issue. The problem remains.
Also, I downloaded the iso start disk and the problem also appears when running
9.10 from the CD.

Same problem for me: fresh install 9.10 download iso, verified. Can
log in to terminal session or failsafe Gnome and system runs fine. Will
log in to normal Gnome desktop OK, but first mouse click will lock X
session solid... no mouse, no KB, have to hard reboot with power switch.

It looks like I posted too soon. Removing the compiz packages did not
get rid of the locking up problem. My system ran for a while and then
locked up again. When it locked up a couple of the lights on my keyboard
flashed so I decided to try disconnecting my KVM switch. I have now run

partition of the hard disk? After deleting the entire 9.10 disk and ext3
reformatting deeper analysis with testdisk reports warnings and some

I found a workaround to this issue for those of you who have an intel

Well, I'm trying my best to get this thing visible, but I think the only thing

"compiz freeze" and you will see a lot, many of them are in more advanced stage
than this one. See
Is there anything else that is needed to get this thing look at by the
developers? I opened up a bug, confirmed that it's fairly wide spread
(by the length of the comments) and it's fairly critical as the fix is
to remove parts of what Ubuntu comes shipped and defaulted with, that

Same hard freeze happens in stock Ubuntu 9.10 on a stock Dell Dimension
2350. Intel 82845 integrated graphics. Only a hard reset can reboot
the system.

I installed Ubuntu version 9.10 on an old Compaq Presario 5000 without a
problem.
Then ran a Ubuntu 9.10 "update" followed by a complete install on a
newer Compaq HP Pavilion A6200T. Both failed after login - the screen
freezes. Version 9.04 ran fine. The newer system uses an Intel Celeron
D420

As I mentioned before, this bug seems to be related to compiz and
therefore does not effect kubuntu at all.
Kubuntu also has desktop effect which work with the current graphic card
driver, and no downgrade is required.
I see no reason to have to downgarde just because I prefer gnome to KDE.

I got the same problem on my old IBM Thinkpad R40. After upgrading from
9.04 to 9.10, the screen freeze at either after login or while opening
the first window in desktop. I did a clean install and still had the
