I got the same problem on my old IBM Thinkpad R40. After upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10, the screen freeze at either after login or while opening the first window in desktop. I did a clean install and still had the same problem.
I managed to solve the problem by : booting into root shell; xinit; gdm; lowered the display resolution to one which the R40 supports. After this, the desktop could start up normally after reboot. I could not enable compiz though, it complained there is no driver or something like that. I don't encounter this freeze problem with 9.10 on my Fujitsu S6520. I think it could be a graphic driver issue. Meanwhile, I just have to live without compiz on the 6.5-years-old R40. -- Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461163 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
