Having had my iPhone 15 plus a short time, it did take me a while. First I don't need to put my face that close. Second, if it is dark, I turn lights on. Third, the simple act of unlocking the phone is enough. Perhaps redoing Face ID may help, just hold the phone a foot or so

Not sure what could be the issue. I suggest keeping both your Mac and iPhone online at all times. Also, make sure both devices are on current versions of their respective OS. You say you are using Voice Dream Writer on your iPhone, and I assume Text Edit on your Mac. Neither should be a problem
