I turned that feature off straight away after enrolling Face ID. I haven't had any problems with it; the device is an iPhone XS, now among the oldest phones supporting iOS 18. If the phone is the appropriate distance away, and held vertically, it recognizes immediately and unlocks.

I've had more difficulty with fingerprint recognition than with Face ID, although Apple's fingerprint sensor and associated software are more reliable than what is on my non-Apple device - a laptop.
