[RBW] Re: Banks-Vernonia Betty

2013-08-21 Thread Don Compton
Andy,
Thank you for story and the pics. My kids are grown with their own
families, but I can still remember going out on rides with them. I had a
mountain bike with a child's seat in the back for my 3 yo daughter and my
son had his BMX bike. In Lodi we have a great offroad trail along the
Mokelumne River( now closed to bikes). We would go riding for hours
exploring, seeing all kinds of creatures and having a great time. Enjoy
your family.

[RBW] back problems

2013-08-26 Thread Don Compton
It was a revelation to meet Grant P. and talk to him about fit, bikes, and
just riding in general. That was 8 years ago. Well, after sliding away from
the gym( just lazy and nothing to do with Grant) and all my core workouts,
I am really paying the price. My back cannot hack any significant effort on
the bike, even on my Riv. I am finally back to the gym working on my core,
balance, and flexibility.
Bottom line, at 61 I can't take this stuff for granted( pun not intended).

[RBW] Re: back problems

2013-08-26 Thread Don Compton
Michael,
I am starting slow. No sit ups. Mostly balancing workouts. trying to hold
my hips stable by using my abs. It all seems pretty simple, but after a few
minutes, I realize how I have not been using these muscles. Also, because
the majority of my exercise has been on the bike, my stability has gone to
hell. I am going to work on this, 3 days a week, and only ride short rides
mostly in easy spin mode. I want to get back to enjoying riding in the
hills ( 60 miles has always been my favorite distance) and this is my
vehicle to getting back to being able to accomplish this.

I just want to say thanks for all your ideas. This is a great site and the
members are very caring.
Monday, I started a regimen with a clinic called Pump in Lodi. It's run by
P.T's and they concentrate on core and balance. I had been going to a gym
for years and just got lazy. After only riding my bike for a period of
time, I am paying the price. I am only going to do short, easy rides until
my core and balance catch up with my legs.
Bottom line, at 61 years, I really need to keep up with this stuff.
Aging is not easy.

With my bad back ( 61 yrs young ), I have been raising my bars and tilting
the my saddle more nose up on my Roadeo. The combination of both moves

Wow, that's a nice build. No shortcuts. If I didn't have my Roadeo( a 59cm

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-17 Thread Don Compton
Sean,
First, my 60cm Ram had a 1cm longer seattube and a slightly shorter toptube
than my 59cm Roadeo.. The handling is so similar. I think because of the
Roadeo's slightly shorter chainstays and slightly lighter tubeset, the
Roadeo just feels a little livelier. The feeling of entering a turn is very
similar.
I don't have racks and don't carry anything more than a couple of bottles
and and a small Acorn "rollbag" with minimum tools and spares. However, I
usually ride on 700x29 GB Cerfs at low pressures.
I ride club rides and a few centuries and really enjoy riding this bike on
bumpy, hilly, back roads in many areas of Northern Cal.
Hope this helps.
Don

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa 58.7 Web Special but...

2013-10-20 Thread Don Compton
I live in Northern Ca. and get to visit Riv Headquarters once in awhile.
Last time I was able to ride an Appaloosa and I was amazed with the
handling of this bike. Its very eye-opening how much we give up thinking
that a racer-influenced design is so good. That influence really distorts
reality regarding bicycle ride and handling. That Appaloosa felt like I
could bomb down any hill with total confidence.

[RBW] epiphany, or just a reminder

2013-11-15 Thread Don Compton
First off, I have more bikes than I need. I love to ride 35-50 mile
rides, rolling hills. I have been suffering with some hard core back issues.
I am not in a chair, but lots of hip, back, and foot pain.
I finally started to work out again, and have been doing so at a gym run by
"PT's". I am coming back, but it's slow process.
Ok, here's the epiphany: after all this work, my favorite bike to hammer on
is still my Roadeo, hills included. Its not just the ride position, but the
bike just matches my pedal stroke. The frame is flexy when I am standing,
but when I am hammering, sitting on the saddle up a hill, I get this
soft-pedal, rhythmic feeling on climbs.

[RBW] New stuff on my Roadeo

2013-11-15 Thread Don Compton
I totally ride and believe in Rivendell bikes. But, I like the new 11sp
stuff. I am going with Campy 11sp. with a TA Zephyr 110 crank. 34 inner
ring with a 12-29 cassette that works for me. The shift lever along with my
Shimano brake release gives me some workability with wide tires. For me,
its a perfect combo.

Re: [RBW] New stuff on my Roadeo

2013-11-15 Thread Don Compton
Going 11 allows me to use Shimano/Sram compatible 11sp. hubs and cassettes.
With eleven, I am not stuck with only Campy cassettes or crappy IRD
cassettes.
Leonard Zinn has been testing using Campy 11sp. shifters and derailleurs
with Sram and Shimano 11sp cassettes on non-Campy rear hubs. He didn't even
have to change or adjust anything.
And, I like to have a 32 cog available.

Re: [RBW] New stuff on my Roadeo

Michael,
I am running a double, 50-34 rings, 12-29 cassette, but I can run a Shimano
11-32 on a Shimano compatible hub, which I will use for tough hilly rides
and multi-day rides. The 11 cog is totally useless for me ( even the 12 is
marginal ), but no one offers a 11 sp cogset with less that an 11 cog on
low range cassettes.

Re: [RBW] epiphany, or just a reminder

2013-11-17 Thread Don Compton
Patrick,
As a former golfer, All Pac-8 first string in 1973, I can relate planning
to golf stiffness. The flexibility of the shaft adds some energy to the
golf swing. As the swing speed increases, it becomes more difficult to time
the kick of the shaft. I can see a comparison in bicycle frames. Mario
Cipollini needs a much stiffer frame than I. Its a hard concept for most to
comprehend, but its very real. No metal bats in the Majors for a really
good reason: the baseball parks would be obsolete. Its happened to some of
the great courses in golf.

2016-04-29 Thread Don Compton
Patrick, As I age ( 64 ), I am still enjoying riding, but the "roadie
club" rides have become less attractive to me. I put together a Sunday ride
from my home and usually have 8-15 people show up. Maybe because I am
getting older, I am getting less tolerant of riders whole can't appreciate
the benefit of a cohesive group that allows everyone on the ride to keep up
with the group. Oh well.
Another change I see is all this Strave like crap. Whatever happened to the
just, sheer enjoyment of riding? When I see this crap on my rides, I just
can't wait for the ride to be over and head to the range to hit some
bullseyes

[RBW] Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

I bought a Roadeo the first year they were available and it's been my main
and recently only bike. I have always enjoyed Grant's bikes, but I am a
roady. I use really skinny 700x28 Grand Bois tires pumped up 65f and 75r.
Seriosly, for most club riders, the Roadeo is probably the best bike they
could ever ride, especially on the fast, curvy downhills in the Berkeley
hills.

[RBW] Re: When to say goodbye to a bike

2013-11-26 Thread Don Compton
On another note, I foolishly sold my Rambouillet a few years ago. Giant
mistake. I later purchased a Roadeo, which for me, is the perfect bike, I
would still be using the Ram. There is or was some sentimental value
because G.P. introduced me to the Riv fit and I benefitted greatly from the
new position. Oh well, we move on and I really enjoy, after 3 years, my
Roadeo.
A fellow riding riding riding partner just purchased a Salsa Vaya and was
talking about how he could install a fairly large tire on that bike. I
showed him that I could easily put a 38c on my Roadeo. He was a little
shocked.

[RBW] Today's Ride

2013-11-29 Thread Don Compton
Did you ever have a ride that started so screwed up that you're wondering
wtf I am doing here. Well, my wife and I went on our club ride, but the
start location's gate was closed. OK no big deal, we'll just drive to the
next parking lot and meet everybody. No dice. Next we park at another lot
in town and meet one of our riding buddies and we're good to go. The rest
of the club parks in another lot. Its getting late and our friend rides to
the other lot to join the main group. Well, shit happens. My wife's front
wheel is flat. WTF! I fix the flat and we ride and find that our group has
left us behind.
Anyway, it all came to a good ending. We caught up with the club and they
thought that we had left early and all was well. The real story is that
with all the B.S., the ride in the Ione, ca. was spectacular and coming
home on a gradual, rolling downhill, in 60 degree weather with little or
no wind makes you forget any of the early crap in a ride.We all ended the
ride with giant smiles. Another good ride on the Roadeo.

I wish you the best. Hang in there.
I suffer from osteoarthritis, neck and back, and cold weather is difficult.

alternatives, but don't give up the independence of riding your bike.
Sometimes, you just have to take some time off.

Eric,
I hated buying GB Cerfs for $60, but they are so good on my Roadeo. Also,

[RBW] Enjoying my Roadeo today

2014-01-11 Thread Don Compton
I let myself get really out of shape ( weak legs, weight gain ). I have
been riding my Hampsten Ti bike to try to compensate, to no avail. Well
today, I rode the Roadeo. It felt like I had returned home. I really
slacked off in 2013, rode easily and gained weight. Riding with with my
club mates, I just was trying to lessen the pain by riding my lighter Ti
bike. Bottom line( hopefully) I will lose a few pounds and be riding the
Roadeo with no fear in the hills.

[RBW] new Brooks C-17

2014-08-13 Thread Don Compton
Tomorrow will be my first 40 mile on my new C-17. Wish me luck. I just
can't ride my B-17s anymore. The hump that develops after miles of breakin
causes me some problems and , after not riding a B-17 for 3 months, I tried
one more time. The same crotch problems came back. Hopefully the C-17 will
work out.
I have shortish femurs and the saddles that I am using on my other bikes
will not work on my Roadeo ( even with a no setback seatpost).

[RBW] Re: new Brooks C-17

2014-08-14 Thread Don Compton
I road 35 miles on my new Brooks C17. I had to make a few adjustments,
saddle tilt and raised the bars a little. I think I like it. It reminds me
of my B-17s before they developed the excessive humps. I still need to move
the saddle a little forward. I have some Rivets and they're comfortable,
but I like the saddle to feel a little sturdier, not flex as much.

[RBW] Re: Anyone running a TA Zephyr Light (compact double) crankset on their Rambouillet?

I had a 60cm Ram and used a 119 Philwood jis bb. After I sold the Ram
frameset( giant mistake), I bought a Roadeo and use the same combination.
The TA Zephyr two ring crank with the 119 bb works flawlessly with my Campy

Yes, it's setup symmetrical. If you use a 116, you will have to offset to

[RBW] Chains and cassettes

2014-08-18 Thread Don Compton
Maybe I am just an anal fanatic, but I clean my chains and cassettes every
100 miles or so. I learned back in the nine speed days, that if I used a
chain too long, the cassette would also be worn out.
Now( my bikes are all obsolete Campy 10sp), I run my chains 3000 miles. I
buy the cheapist KMC 10sp chains. I have cassettes that are 10 yo.
Also, many of my Campy shifters have been rebuilt, but not bad since there
mostly 8-10yo. All my front and rear derailleurs work perfectly.
Campy is a great companion to my Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: Blug post

2014-09-23 Thread Don Compton
I have never been a tourist, commuter, or randonneur, but ever since I
first had a conversation with Grant at Riv Headquarters, I have been a firm
believer in Grant's bike designs. I am just a club rider that will do a
century if I am talked into it. My first Riv was a Ram in around 2003 or 4.
My back was killing me and a friend had just bought a Romulus ( complete
bike ), and I just got the idea that maybe I should give Rivendell a try.
Well, after Grant spending a fairly lengthy amount of time with me, I
walked out with a Ram frameset.
I currently own a Roadeo and it will be with me until I can't ride anymore.
It's obviously great that the Roadeo can fit such large tires, but the
bike's handling and geo allowing a fit that I need is such a plus.
On another note, the Roadeo has been around for awhile now. They must be
selling a few.

[RBW] 44 noodle vs. 42 Highway One

2014-09-25 Thread Don Compton
I was enjoying the Soma Highway One bar, but while experimenting with my
new Compass tires on my Roadeo and then my Hampsten SBTi, I have come to
the realization that the 44 Noodle is best for me. It just offers me more
positions on the bar. GP was right all along. My Soba 44cm is going back on
my Roadeo until I change my mind again.

[RBW] Re: Fred Matheny roadbikerider.com Compass tire review...on a Roadeo!

2014-09-25 Thread Don Compton
I got my Compass tires yesterday, 700x32. I installed them last night.
Today I rode 20 miles on them. 50psi in front, 60psi in the rear. I weigh
about 178lbs and my Roadeo weighs about 23lbs with water, tools, etc. The
ride is sublime. They're keepers for me. We have a lot of beat up roads
around here and these tires really soak up the bumps.

Eric,
I live in Lodi in Central California. Its a wine grape growing region and
we have a lot of 2 lane country roads. Also 15 miles east we have a lot of
hills. In both areas there are a lot of poorly maintained road surfaces. I
have been riding the Grand Bois Cerfs 700x28 for years. They're expensive
but last twice as long as the old 23 and 25 highend tires I have used in
the past. I run 60lbs and 70lbs front and rear on A23 rims. I am trying the
new Compass 700x32 normal weight currently and really like them. I have
been running 50lbs,60lbs front rear. I have never had a pinch flat on any
of these tires. I weight about 175.

[RBW] struggling with my B-17's

2014-11-17 Thread Don Compton
I have been having the usual saddle problems with my B-17's. After longterm
breakin, the hump makes long rides impossible for me.
I finally found a solution, the Selle Anatomica. It just works for me. At 2
weeks from 63yo, I just can't stand any saddle discomfort anymore. The
Anatomica has solved the problem. I sold all my Brooks and will never look
back.

[RBW] Re: struggling with my B-17's

2014-11-17 Thread Don Compton
I am using an old Titanio X on my Hampsten with a 72deg sta. I ordered
their new "X' saddle for my Rex. I bought the Titanio X a few years ago and
just didn't feel right on it. But as we age , things change. I am able to
adjust my saddle back up where it should be and have NO discomfort in the
drops or anytime during my rides. And, because I can raise my saddle back
up where it should be, I am rediscovering some lost power. A win-win.

Just curious, what size are your "Cerfs"? I have 700x28s on my Riv Roadeo

Re: [RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres tires, a review.

2014-06-23 Thread Don Compton
Tim,
Thanks for your reply. I have a pair of 700x26 cerfs, but the Vredestien
25mm Grand Fondo Tricomps are about the same size and I have had great luck
with them including a great ride. I think that the 28 Cerfs are quite a bit
more compliant than the 26's. The 28s seem large for their size, while the
26s seem more like 25s. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion.

[RBW] haven't been riding my Roadeo lately

2014-06-24 Thread Don Compton
I was having problems with the "nether regions" and had to finally give up
on Brooks B17's. On the way, I discovered the Specialized Romin saddle and
Assos shorts.
My discomfort was so bad that I went to Kaiser and had all the tests.
Health wise, everything is "ok".
Well, the Romin saddle and Assos shorts are my "go to".
Now, my Roadeo's seat tube angle is too shallow for my Romin saddle. I'm
going to try one of my Rivet saddles with my new Soma Highway bars. I think
this is going to be a winner.

[RBW] Re: Ram versus Roadeo; trade?

Patrick,
I hope you find your Roadeo. I used to own a 60cm Ram and always regretted
selling it. I eventually bought a 59cm Roadeo and it's my favorite bike.
Only slightly lighter and the handling is just a little more responsive
without losing the Rivendell stable feel that I really like on fast, bumpy,
curvy downhills. Good luck.

Patrick,
To your benefit, I think the 57's and smaller sizes use lighter tubing than
the 59's and up. Also, threadless headsets save quite a bit of weight and
are stiffer. I have a conventional quill stem, but I have lighter bikes if
I feel the need.

10 shifters and derailleurs, Shimano brakes, Campy hubs with Veocity A23
rims, Grand Bois 700x28 tires, B-17Ti, and Thomson seatpost. I have many
other bikes that are lighter, but on long rides, I choose my Roadeo, hilly
or not. On fast downhills, the Grant Pedersen handling is flawless and
inspires confidence.

Your wife's fit.
Remember that Rivs have slack seat tube angles. Actually, they are short

Beautiful bike. Is your frame a 60cm.? I had a blue 60cm Ram and loved it.
I foolishly sold the frame and truly regretted it. I ended up buying a 59cm
Roadeo and really enjoy that bike. Both are great bikes and have the Grant
Pedersen handling characteristics that few bikes have. I hope you enjoy
many miles on your new bike.

[RBW] Re: Strange happenings out there

2013-05-18 Thread Don Compton
I just finished a 73 mile on my Roadeo. Maybe I could go faster on a few
short steep hills, but my rides are not about comparing my performance to
someone else or some group. I just want to be fit enough to enjoy my rides.
This mentality doesn't fit in with the carbon-race bike marketing BS. I am
61, not slow and can climb reasonably fast. But, my Roadeo gives me a very
comfortable position and the long chainstays make the bike very stable on
fast, curvy, bumpy downhills.
The carbon sellers can't comprehend my situation. But RBW
can

[RBW] Re: Strange happenings out there

2013-05-18 Thread Don Compton
Peter,
I don't tour or carry much, but the ability to use any size tire and the
long chainstays makes the Roadeo just a great bike for me. My friends with
their Carbon creations look at me cross-eyed, but I just really enjoy
riding the bike. Its like my car, a late model Mini Cooper. Its not as fast
as a lot of cars, but there's no car, no matter how expensive, that's more
fun to drive. And, I can put my Roadeo in the back of the car. I had a
conversation with Grant and told him that they came out with a model that
fit a club rider like myself. It was during a visit to the shop in Walnut
Creek. He sold me his unpainted frameset and together, we decided on a
color, "Mary's blue" , his wife's favorite color. Even though I don't carry
any loads on my bike, I and a true believer in Rivendell. Anyway, I am
probably " preaching to the choir".

Patrick,
It's not about carbon vs. steel. It's about design and geometry. The only
carbon bike that I have seen that looks good to me is the Calfee Adventure

consider that Calfee. But, it's hard to pull me from my nostalgic love of
steel.

[RBW] Newbaum's cloth bar tape

I purchased my first cloth bar tape and have a new appreciation for the
effort needed to install this tape. I bought Newbaum's and its very nice,
but its a "bearcat" to wrap. Two rolls on my Ergo equipped, 44cm noodles,
with a little to spare.
