RE: Talking Blood Pressure Machine
I was looking for one of these a couple of years ago. I could not find one that connects to the computer. After calling several medical supply places around the country I finally found one for about $200, including the large cuff. I'm out of town and don't remember where I bought it. My unit would give over a hundred readings on 4 AA NiMH batteries. I have a problem with blood pressure and need to check it daily to see if my blood pressure medicine is working properly or if my wife's blood pressure machine is accurate. Is there a talking blood pressure machine out there that I could use with a battery or one that connects to the computer and could be read out via my screen reader? A computer-connected one would be good, as I probably could email the info to my doctor for review or, in any case, I need one that will check my blood pressure and read out all of the settings. RE: Streaming Clear Channel Stations
A number of Clear Channel stations stream on the web. Many choose not to stream because they have to pay the internet rates for any music they stream. Rush Limbaugh said the other day that his stream blocks all music, including parodies, because of the cost. Said the stations have to pay the royalties if they want to broadcast any music he plays. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2008 4:21 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Streaming Clear Channel Stations I asked about Clear Channel streaming stations on another e-mail list and got this answer from a Clear Channel employee. The suspense is killing me so in order to try and relax a little, I thought I’d ask if anyone here has used such a phone system and how did they find it? RE: Cassia Hub handles multi-room audio with any Bluetooth speakers
The hype on this device makes it sound like a wireless hub. The first time I checked the site it implied it only broadcast iPhone Bluetooth. This sounds like it works with any audio signal but still isn't clear if it is wired or will rebroadcast a Bluetooth signal. They claim 1000 foot range or three walls. My 30 foot devices can handle two and sometimes three walls. Is the open range really 1000 foot? Also, can I use voice control on my iPhone or other device from 100 feet away? I haven't found any thing on their site to answer these questions. If anyone has more information I would be interested. Mary Cassia Hub handles multi-room audio with any Bluetooth speakers TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog We first met the Cassia Hub back at CES, a device that offered the similar connectivity to a WiFi router but for Bluetooth. Now the company is announcing a new feature that will allow owners of that Bluetooth "router" a way to connect their wireless speakers for multi-room audio. The new tool is called BlueStream and it works with any Bluetooth speakers alongside the company's Hub. Once your speakers are connected to Cassia's Hub, you can stream music from the likes of Apple Music, Spotify and other sources just like you would to a single wireless unit, only now the audio is sent to multiple devices. Instead of connecting to one of the speakers, you link your phone, tablet or even an Amazon Echo to the Hub to play tunes. The BlueStream feature will be available as a firmware update to existing Cassia Hub owners. If you haven't nabbed one yet, the Bluetooth device will set you back $150. And if you require speakers to make use of that new tool, Cassia has a 360-degree model for $80. RE: keeping bluetooth running on the iphone
This is a problem with all of the Bluetooth transmitters I have tried. The signal drops after an interval of no audio. The delay varies from less than a second to several seconds, depending on device. The problem is when the audio returns there is a delay while the Bluetooth devices go through their handshake protocol. This causes a loss of the beginning of the audio. One of my devices looses over 5 seconds every time although it is usually only a second or so. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of André van Deventer Sent: Saturday, November 26, 2016 10:05 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: keeping bluetooth running on the iphone Let us hope this is not the case. Preferably one that raises volume to a set level rather than by a set amount. Winamp bookmarks apparently a new format and location
Previous to the last Winamp update, Winamp bookmarks were stored in the Winamp root folder in a file named WINAMP.BM. It was possible to edit this file with a text editor. Apparently this is no longer the case. I've searched through Winamp's sub folders but can't find anything that looks like a bookmark file. Does anyone know what the new file is called, where it is stored, and whether it remains a text file? Winamp bookmark file location solved
Sorry folks, not so bright on my part. Just as I finished sending the message it occurred to me that I didn't look where most applications today store personal settings. The file is still named WINAMP.BM, it remains a text file which may be edited, and it is located, at least under XP, under Documents and settings\all users or your name\applications\winamp\. List: With Winamp excluding book marks from the library, I am reluctant to upgrade winamp beyond version 5.13. While it's possible to get to bookmarks through the file menu, once a bookmark is chosen, the list disappears and view returns to Winamp's main window. Having developed a list of more than 400 radio stations as bookmarks, I appreciated the library list view allowing me to go up and down the list quickly sampling each station's offering. Perhaps someone with greater knowledge of Winamps features in it's latest releases might suggest another way to achieve a similar view without constantly having to go through the file menu. Winamp: Perhaps a Buffering Issue
Though I'm not certain that it's the cause, since I've installed the latest version of Winamp, my radio streams are fairly regularly interrupted. I'm forced to press X to resume the stream. I'm suspecting that perhaps I need to adjust stream buffering, but as I look through the options, I can't seem to find where buffering would be adjusted. Winamp library no longer supported
Today I installed version 5.552 of Winamp and to my surprise and disappointment I found that the library is no longer supported, or at least, I found no way to access it. I have better than 400 radio and audio streams stored as bookmarks. And while it's still possible to access bookmarks from the main menu, in the library with the bookmark view, I was able to arrow up and down the list and streams, moving to and playing one after another, much like presets on a radio. If accessed from the main menu, Once enter is pressed on a bookmark, the bookmark list disappears and focus returns to the main menu. My questions are these: is anyone aware of how to create that sort of preset functionality without the library? Or, are there plans to restore the library in a future version? Winamp and BookMarks
As someone on the list had suggested, the version of Winamp posted on the WhiteStick download page does not include the library. The library is included in the 5.552 version on the Winamp.com site. Also, the easiest way to create a bookmark in Winamp is when playing a stream, from the main menu window, press Alt I. This will write the bookmark at the end of the bookmark list. Other than editing the Winamp.bm file, I've found no way to sort bookmarks. I find it useful to Arrange my bookmarks by genre. Classical, npr, oldies, and so forth. Grouping like streams together, I can quickly check the streams within the genre. Tony Swartz To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Hardware Synthesizers with Jaws 64 bit Windows
In my business I do quite a bit of sound editing and always prefer to separate my screen reader voice, routing it to the dry and almost toneless output of a hardware synthesizer. I've made a considerable investment in several hardware synthesizers including both the PCI and external versions of the TripleTalk from Access Solutions. Within the last several months I installed a new PC running Windows 7 64 bit in my sound booth and was quite disappointed that Jaws for the 64 bit environment did not include drivers for any hardware synthesizers. At that point I contacted Mike Cozzolino of Access Solutions who agreed to begin work on the development of 64 bit drivers for the TripleTalk series. He quickly developed drivers to work with Window Eyes but has had little cooperation from Freedom Scientific in his efforts to develop drivers for Jaws. My question is whether anyone knows how and whom to contact at SF to try and get some movement on the issue? I've written to support, but received responses which told me what I already know, that at present there is no support for hardware synthesizers, which was my initial point. Here we have a vendor willing to invest the time and money to continue offering to support a product, and I would sincerely hope that SF would feel the same. I would be very disappointed as well to lose my investment in these hardware synthesizers. Tony Swartz To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Hardware Synthesizers in 64 Bit Environment
In my business I do quite a bit of sound editing, so I prefer to isolate the voicing of my screen reader away from what I'm editing. This can be achieved in several ways such as routing a screen readers output to a separate sound card or through the use of a hardware synthesizer. Through the years I have invested in several hardware synthesizers from Access Solutions. When I moved to Windows 7 64 bit, in the absence of 64 bit drivers, I found that the synthesizers were not supported by my screen reader. When I expressed my frustration to Mike Cozzolino, owner of Access Solutions, he took up the cause and has developed 64 bit drivers for both the triple-talk usb and the dectalk usb. In several months he should have the 64 bit driver completed for the triple-talk PCI, as well. To his credit, he is making the 64 bit drivers available at no cost to previous customers. Total Recorder and Keyboard Commands
For those using Total Recorder, I'm not sure how many of you are aware that Total Recorder allows the user to assign a preferred keyboard command to virtually every function in Total Recorder. For instance, I have stop set to F5, Play to F6, Record to F7 and so forth. To assign keyboard commands: open the options menu with Alt O, the first sub menu under options is Settings. For some screen readers the title of the first sub menu might not be announced, so use your up and down arrows to assure yourself that you are at the Settings sub menu, then press enter. This will open a tree view of setting categories. The 4th one down is short cuts. Tab once over to a list of Total Recorder functions. Down and up arrow through the various functions. To assign a keyboard command to a specific function, highlight the function, then tab over to the press new short cut key button, press the desired key or combination of keys, then tab over to the assign button and press spacebar. I find then that I have to tab over a number of times to get back to the list of functions. If I instead shift tab to go back to the list, it erases the assignment I've just made. At the end of making keyboard assignments, tab over to the OK button and press enter or spacebar to preserve the keyboard assignments. intro and the inevitable question re: making a musical recording with the Behringer Podcastudio USB
Hi everyone. My name is Tony. I'm an audiophile with little talent and even less money. I own the podcastudio set from Behringer, and I want to use it to make a recording of myself singing with an accompaniment track. For those who might not be aware of this set, it comes with a UCA200 in/out USB audio interface with RCA jacks, a small mixer, an XLR microphone, and a pair of really big headphones. My problem is that I can't figure out how to be able to monitor my voice, hear the accompaniment track, and make the recording without the accompaniment track also being recorded in the vocal track. The mixer only seems to allow for the capturing of the UCA sound card's output at the same time as the microphone. I am able to lay down the vocal track by itself without the accompaniment being part of that track, but then I can't monitor my voice. I can hardly hear myself with those huge headphones unless I monitor, but I would rather not use a different set. I got this kit to make podcasts that would allow me to patch the JAWS for Windows screen reader through to Goldwave so that it wouldn't sound like I just put a mic next to a pair of speakers, but I no longer make podcasts with it. It doesn't appear to do what I need for music as stated above, but I want to be sure I am not missing something before I try another solution. Perhaps someone on this list has experience with this and would be willing to help. I'd be grateful. I am wanting to surprise my wife by recording at least one song for her birthday, maybe even a whole album if I can find accompaniment tracks. Hi Ken. Thanks for the reply. I actually am using Audacity. When I import the audio for the accompaniment and then lay down the vocal track, that track ends up recording whatever I hear unless I turn off the part of the mixer that monitors my mic. I don't really mind doing that very much, but I think I would make a better recording if I could monitor. re: making a musical recording with the Behringer podcastudio
Hi all. After a little more research, I found out that it's the combination of the Xenyx 502 mixer and the UCA200 audio interface that is the problem. My only decent solution is to buy another setup. I found that the Behringer 1202 USB should do what I need regarding making musical recordings while monitoring my input with headphones because it has the built-in audio interface. If anyone knows of a different solution for doing this with a USB or firewire audio interface, I would be grateful to hear about it. RE: Audio software on Asus Netbook
Hi Dane. I don't know how much memory you have, but my experience tells me that the more ram you have on one of those netbooks for that sort of thing the better. Goldwave should not pose much of a problem, but you might get more stability if you could make sure the processor priority is lower than normal for intensive operations like batch processing. In cases like that, I also like to terminate the windows explorer process to give the computer more resources to work with. To do this 1. Open the task manager with Control+Escape. 2. Control+Tab until you get to the Process page. 3. Look for the Explorer.exe process and tab to the End Process Button. Press it and confirm. 4. Close the task manager. Ending the explorer process will get rid of your desktop and start button and system tray access, as well as any hotkeys like control+Alt+J for launching programs. However, you can still Alt+Tab and Alt+Shift+Tab to cycle between programs, and Control+Escape will still open the Task Manager. To restart the explorer process: 1. Open the Task Manager again as above. 2. Since the Processes Tab was your previous page, Control+Shift+Tab to get to the Tasks page. 3. Alt+N to start a new task. 4. Type "explorer" without the quotes and press enter. The Explorer process will come back again. This procedure should work with no problem if you happen to lose your screen reader, heaven forbid. Mark, I don't know what other responses you've received, but here's my 2 cents. If you have a sound card that includes the line-in as part of your playback controls, you can select the line-in in the playback control section of your Windows volume control. This is different from the one in your recording control part. This one will let you here what is coming into the line-in. It might appear in the form of a checkbox that says mute, which you would uncheck. Make sure that the corresponding sliders are also more than 0. Another important issue, is voice tuning. The studio where I work, use Melodyne to do voice tuning, since it sounds very natural, not as synthetic as some of the autotuners out there. Also, with melodyne it's possible to tune small portions of music, even parts of a single note. I wonder if Melodyne can be accessed at all with Jaws, or is the lay-out too graphical? What good alternative is there to melodyne, if any, something that would enable you to achieve almost the same success as with Melodyne? Thanks for any help, it would be highly appreciated. A few problems with Winamp beta
With the beta Winamp version 5.33, I did experience some problems with the library which I tend to rely on. I'm accustomed to control shifting into the library then tabbing twice to my list of bookmarks. With the beta, I found that I had to use the Jaws cursor to first click on bookmarks before I could tab over to access the list. I must admit though, that after finding that to be the case, I rolled back to 5.32, so I can't say that I experimented much. I'm curious as to whether anyone else had my experience? Sound editing and Marking Time Intervals
First, let me ask that you forgive my ignorance for using the incorrect editing terms. I've used Total Recorder for several years, mostly for very coarse editing. The other day I was attempting to clean up an interview trying to get rid of pauses and the all too many stumbles and realized that with Total recorder, it's only possible to move the editing markers by a tenth of a second gradations. So, as a result if I didn't by happen stance place a marker exactly between words, moving it to the left or right by a tenth of a second would make it too large of a leap. The result would be either to include the end of the last word of the phrase I whished to cut, or clip the first word of the portion I want to retain. My question is whether either Gold Wave or Sound Forge allows for much finer movements of editing markers? Any comments would be appreciated. Limitations of Sound Forge Trial
has anyone downloaded and tested the Sound Forge 8 trial version? In Sound Forge 8, could anyone familiar with the product explain what setting I must have set so that marking the boundaries of a selection using left and right bracket have no effect at all? Minor League Baseball on the Net
I learned earlier this year that a triple A minor league team moving into my area would be carried on the net. Last evening I brought up the site and found that the broadcast was through MiMLB.com a division of MLB. The site uses the same media player, and the login is almost exactly that of Game Day. I then assume that the fidelity would compare to that of Game Day. When the broadcast began I was astounded at the higher quality. It was though I was tuning into an FM broadcast of the radio station carrying the game. I realize that Game Day at $14.95 a year is a bargain, but surely after several years at it, I would have expected an improvement in Game Day's sound. Sound Forge, normalizing and Volume
Apparently I don't understand the purpose of normalizing. I was under the impression that by using normalize under the processing menu in Sound Forge, one could average out the volume of a selected portion or an entire file. I've made a recording first speaking softly then raising my voice then lowering it again. I then experimented with a number of normalize controls but can't determine how to make the recording's volume to even out. All I manage to do is increase the overall volume of the recording. Frankly, I'm not sure that a question such as this should be discussed on this list, but if not, is there a more appropriate list to which this question should be addressed? Thanks, Tony B. Post processing and Sound FOrge
I'm wondering whether there would be enough interest among those who are proficient in both post production techniques and the use of Sound Forge to serve as a discussion panel in one of the talking community rooms. What I was thinking as an example, was for a panel of two or three individuals to plan several one hour to ninety minute sessions to in general discuss post production techniques and how these techniques are handled in Sound Forge as a blind user of the product. The final third of each session could then be opened up to audience questions. If several volunteers would agree to serve as a panel, I'd be willing to approach Talking Communities. Thanks, Tony B. Post processing and Sound Forge
Jim: that's a very generous offer on your part, many thanks. This is terribly imposing, but two individuals on this list who have responded to my Sound Forge questions have been Matthew Bullis and Michael Lang. Gentlemen would you consider serving as a panel. Perhaps there are others as well. Michael, I believe you reside in western Europe, so we'd have to work on a time which both serves your purposes and at least the west coast of the U.S. Perhaps scheduling it for three ninety minute sessions on consecutive weekends. We would have to presume that participants would have a basic working knowledge of SoundForge. This is not to say that participation would be restricted, but in order to accomplish the intended purpose of the sessions, the panel ought not be bogged down by very basic questions or repeating answers from one session to another. Once several volunteers have come forward, perhaps we could submit questions to give the panel a sense of the material to discuss. I suppose I sound a bit anal in my suggestions, but on a number of occasions I've observed such conferences be derailed by participants with only a casual interest in the topic. Thank you, Tony B. Winamp plugIns and Total Recorder
Since my MP3 player does not support the WMA file format, I've taken to downloading books in a WMA format, playing the file through Winamp, re-recording the file using Total Recorder then converting the file to an MP3 format. Those familiar with Total Recorder are aware that in silent recording mode, Total Recorder will record at many times the speed of the original recording. I can not, however, find a way to have Winamp silently play a sound file into Total Recorder faster than 2.6 times it's original speed. Would anyone care to theorize whether it is a limitation of the output plug-in or the DSP plug-in? Thanks much, Tony B. Re: Winamp plugIns and Total Recorder
Sorry, I should have pointed out that the WMA files are DRM (copy protected) files which Total Recorder won't open for obvious reasons. Before anyone should comment regarding the illegality of this practice, may I say that the illegality would be in distributing the re-recorded file. As long as I listen to, then destroy the file, I am observing the intent of copy protection. I value greatly the services of RFB&D and NLS, here in the U.S., and the rights of authors to have their works protected, not to take copy protection seriously. Tony B. training dragon naturally speaking
Hi all. I find that it is a big pain in the neck to train Dragon just using a plain old screen reader because of having to navigate the window with the JAWS cursor while listening and talking at the same time. Round up of Accessible audio editors/recorders
Several days ago there was a discussion of Accessible audio editors/recorders. A number of respondents listed various products. I was surprised to note that Total Recorder wasn't included. It got me thinking that I'm rather clueless as regards sound editing and that products like Gold Wave and such, provide far more sophisticated sound editing capabilities. Can someone please set this poor fool straight. Nevertheless, I am deeply indebted to this list for steering me to Total Recorder, for I've found with writing just a few unsophisticated Jaws scripts, that the application is quite accessible, and for me, it gets done what needs to be done. Inserting into sound files using total recorder
I've been using Total Recorder version SE for several months and enjoy its ease of use for recording materials off the net. While I can record, using a microphone, I'm unable to edit the recording, specifically inserting words at the point where I've marked the file. In Volume Control you can set the balance for one source, such as line in, to left and another to right and get what you are after. RE: Accessible DJ Software
Hi. I can recommend Ots dj for use as a dj. This software is little complicated but when you have played with it you love it, at least i do. It's not very accessible out of the box but with Snowmans script for it it rocks. One downside is the price, it's expencive ... I have used it now for 4 years and I like the sound and response from the software. It plays mp3s but you get more power of it with their own ots format. I have used it on live gigs and on internet broadcasts and I'm very happy with it. It's a good choice if you want to mix songs together and do good transitions between songs. You can read about it at www.otsdj.com Stationplaylist is also very good but it is designed more for radiobroadcasts and you can't mix songs together in this program. I also find Stationplaylist little sluggish in response to commands. More info at www.stationplaylist.com So think of what you wanna do with the software and go out and download a demo and play with it and you'll see wich one you like. Re: Streaming problems
Hi Jeff. What plugin are he using? I have heard somewhere about shoutcast stopping streaming at a certain point when when the stream reach about 1 or 2 gigabyte. I'm not sure of this but some bells are ringing in my poor head. Many thanks Tony At 22:11 2004-08-30, Jeff - The Ultra Guy wrote: A friend is experiencing a problem streaming. His message is below. I use Ots for my broadcasting. I can stream until I have sent 2.784 meg and then the stream drops. CPU usage hits 100%. Anybody using the Athlon64 mother board? Could this be my problem? RE: what's happening with Sound Forge?
Hi Chrissie Do you have any software that uses the soundcard in the background? I thinking of skype for example. If any of those program takes over the input soundforge can't record from that card and when you switch to the internal one in the multimedia control that software also switch to the internal card and soundforge can use the external card because its free. For long time ago I had this problem with ots dj and speak freely Just a thought. RE: WinTV cards
Hi. I had some troubles with my houppauge winTV pr 150. I installed all the software and driver but no luck, the software found the card and I could program the tuner fine but no audio and video. The solution was to download the latest driver for the card and also the latest decoders and after that it works just fine both with audio and video. Check out your brand and model and look at heir support page for the card. Hope this helps. /Tony > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Johnathan Richards > Sent: Friday, December 17, 2004 6:17 AM > To: PC audio discussion list. > Subject: WinTV cards > > > Hi, Everyone, John here > > I've got a question if someone can help me. > > I don't know off the back of my hand what the moddle number > or the brand name is but I think that might not be relivent > to this problem. > > I've installed a PCI WinTV card, and I've had no responce > from it, I thought it was the card I uninstalled the software > that came with the card and took it back to have it replaced > and got a replacement but again, it is doing the same thing > the instructions say using XP.
