Mark, I don't know what other responses you've received, but here's my 2 cents. If you have a sound card that includes the line-in as part of your playback controls, you can select the line-in in the playback control section of your Windows volume control. This is different from the one in your recording control part. This one will let you here what is coming into the line-in. It might appear in the form of a checkbox that says mute, which you would uncheck. Make sure that the corresponding sliders are also more than 0.
