You need to run VNC as a service. I suggest searching the VNC archives, as

should find the server closes itself down with -once if you logoff (so
that xdm disconnects) - as oppposed to simply disconnecting your
vncviewer.
Incidentally, if -indirect is made to work, then -once has to be
interpretted as "twice" inside

computer. One weird thing: the "<," switch on a keyboard does not
work. It surely works with everything else.

As for the WHY, I can't say. But if you change it via the icon in the
taskbar, it appears to change it ONLY for the currently running copy. If
you want to change the default password, you have to do it via the
Startup/Programs/VNC/etc shortcut.
