two monitors - one keyboard
Hi VNC experts, I set up a vnc connection between a Solaris 10 x86 machine and a Windows PC. I have two monitors, two keyboards, two mouses on my desk - each of them connected to one of the machines. I just want to use one keyboard and one mouse (the Solaris ones) to access both systems. On Windows VNC server is running and when I start vncviewer on Solaris I get an xterm back on the Solaris machine with my Windows session. I don't want that really ... what I want is to have the mouse and keyboard working as I was sitting on just one machine (i.e. if I move the mouse to the boarder of one monitor I should see it on the second and vice versa and be able to work there). I am using the vnc package from the Solaris companion CD and the RealVNC Server Free edition on Windows. True - synergy is the solution for this! Thanks for the hint! The Windows client installation is straight forward, so is the configuration. For the Solaris server package I went to http://www.sunfreeware.com/ (you need to install gcc if it is not installed yet) Then edit your synergy.conf file: section: screens B B B B B B B B B B B B # two hosts named: B B B B B B B B B B B B sun01: B B B B B B B B B B B B win02: end section: links B B B B B B B B B B # win02 is to the left of sun01 B B B B B B B B B B sun01: B B B B B B B B B B B B B left = win02 B B B B B B B B B B # sun01 is to the right of win02 B B B B B B B B win02: B B B B B B B B B B B B B B B B B B B rightB = sun01 Start the server with: /usr/local/bin/synergys -c synergy.conf and the client on the windows machine. The only thing which is not possible is - of course - to unlock the windows screen. So you still have to use the win keyboard for that ... Cheers, Tom Ran Sasson @ I.O. RE: NT 4.0 SP5 w/ cisco VPN client
One way to get around this issue is to set up your cisco router to use a split horizon. This allows you to see both networks. We currently do that here so that we can see our internal network and our customers network. When you connect your computer by VPN (tunneling through the Internet to the NT server), your computer takes on a another IP which is a LAN IP of the network you're connecting to. The RRAS server will normally assign your computer a LAN address. You end up with two LAN adapters. One physical and one logical. The Physical one is a LAN card or a modem. The VPN connection on your computer will ba a logical network adapter. Once the VPN connection is established, access the VNC4 server using the server's LAN IP address and not the public Internet IP address. Alan, You got to remember that a VPN will allow a remote computer to appear as though it were a node on the network. So I suggest that you share your home printer. Then on the PC your connecting to with VNC thru the VPN print to it. Since you are now a node on the network there should not be any reason the other pc that you are connecting to thru VNC should not be able to see it. I installed the Viewer on an IBM T41 laptop Centrino WinXP Pro (also nominally 1.3 mhz) connected to that router via Wifi with about the same bandwidth. The application is the remote control of Adobe Audition 1.5 and the Echo Console3 in a recording room while the software is running on the tower in another room (to eliminate noise). Mics are connected via long XLR cables to the mic preamps and thence to a pro soundcard in the server. All this is so the musician can control recording takes without pressure, by herself. I have slimmed down everything within the viewer and server I can think of, but there are still significant time lapses between remote action and server response and vice versa. Audition paints the wave form and the VU meters on the host along with the elapsed recording time. The VU meters do NOT respond on the remote and Audition's record clock display is only updated every 6 seconds on the remote (although updated every .1 seconds on the server). The waveform rarely is repainted. The viewer software tells me that transfer is occuring at about 6800 kbits/sec. This should be enough to handle screen scraping. Task Mgr on the server tells me that only about 23% of CPU is being used (by RealVNC and there is still about 250mb (out of 512mb) memory free. Again, I have disabled every nonessential feature in VNC and lowered screen colors and pixel resolution. Is there anything else I can do to accelerate performance? Should I try another product? Help getting VNC to work on LAN with Netgear router
I have a Netgear wireless router (WGR614) with two machines hooked to it. One hardwired with WinXPHome (with modem) and another wireless (laptop, w/ NetGear WG111)). I also only have a dialup connection, so am not using the WAN Broadband port of the router. I have Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) working between the two and can fileshare. Everything in that regard is cool. In order to get this to work, I'm using ICS and have DHCP on the router turned off and the router IP set to 192.168.0.254...out of the range of ICS automatic settings. Now I want to use VNC so that I can see the modem computer from the wireless laptop. The modem computer has an IP of 192.168.0.1 and currently the laptop is 192.168.0.212. The VNC Service is running on the modem computer. When I try to run the VNC client on the laptop, it takes about 20 seconds or so and reports back "Error connection timed out (10060)" or something close to that. I searched the archives on this list and could only find similiar questions but concerning access from the internet WAN. Doesn't seem like anyone is having any trouble like me...? I read about port forwarding, but don't know if that applies to me, or how to really set that up. I would appreciate any help you all could provide. Thanks! Xvnc 4.X and inetd on Solaris
Has anyone been able to get Xvnc 4.X to work via inetd on Solaris? I have seen other reports here and on Google reporting the same issues, but I have not found a solution. The older Xvnc 3.3.7 works fine with my inetd setup, but I cannot get Xvnc 4.1.1 or E4.1.6 to work. The only change to my Xvnc_inetd wrapper script is the addition of the new required "-SecurityTypes=none" option. I have also tried several other options as well with no success. I get the CDE login window, which correctly prompts for username and password, but then the Xvnc window quits as it fails to run dtlogin. It appears that Xvnc 4.X does not transfer the UID from root to the user correctly. Has anyone got this to work? If so, please let me know what entries to /etc/inetd.conf and Xvnc options are needed to make this work. It is frustrating that even the Enterprise version of Xvnc fails to work properly. Thanks in advance. -- Tom L. Schmidt, Manager/SysAdmin Characterization Equipment Micron Technology, Inc. http://www.micron.com/ 8000 S. Federal Way P.O. "/usr/dt/bin/dtlogin -daemon" is the parent process I see being run when the CDE login is being done using Xvnc via inetd. With Xvnc 3.3.7, this would spawn /usr/dt/bin/Xsession to launch CDE, but with Xvnc 4.X, Xsession never spawns. Any other ideas? Thanks...Tom The problem is an incompatibility between Xvnc 4.x and the xdm supplied with Solaris 8/9 (maybe 10 also). The solution that worked for me was to build X11R6 V4.3.0 from source and use its xdm. On Tue, 14 Jun 2005, Tom Schmidt wrote: > > > Has anyone been able to get Xvnc 4.X to work via inetd on Solaris? Re: Xvnc 4.X and inetd on Solaris
Chuck, Your solution worked for me as well! I replaced the Solaris 8 dtlogin binary with the Solaris 9 version and now Xvnc 4.X works via inetd! I agree that this is still not a solution to the root cause, but at least it is a workaround. However I still support some Solaris 2.6 machines and this solution will not work for them since the Solaris 9 dtlogin is not backward compatible with Solaris 2.6. So I do hope that the realvnc authors can fix this issue in their Xvnc 4.X code since Xvnc 3.3.7 does not have this issue. And the workaround above only fixes Solaris 8, not Solaris 2.6. Re: Xvnc 4.X and inetd on Solaris
Tristan, Thanks for the solution! The addition of the "-nolisten named" option fixes Xvnc 4.1.1 and now dtlogin launches as it should, even on my Solaris 2.6 systems. I have been using a font server so that issue I already addressed. Tom Tristan Richardson wrote: I've spent a considerable amount of time tracking down the incompatibilities between dtlogin on Sparc Solaris and Xvnc 4.x (dtlogin is the CDE version of XDM which is used to provide the Solaris login screen when you use the -query option to Xvnc). There are a number of issues, the most significant of which is that there is a bug in dtlogin on Solaris 7 (and probably 2.6 and 8). It looks like it gets confused when it uses the "named" protocol for talking to the X server. Xvnc 3.3.7 used an earlier version of the X server code that doesn't have support for this protocol which is why Xvnc 3.3.7 works fine with it. Luckily there is a simple workaround for Xvnc 4 servers which is to give the "-nolisten named" option to Xvnc. Fonts are another issue which may cause problems but I haven't really got to the bottom of what is going on. Using a font server seems to help in some situations. There is also a bug in the current 4.1.6 Enterprise Edition to do with allocation of file descriptor numbers, for which there is a simple workaround - add "3>/dev/null" to the Xvnc command line. An additional pain is the fact that Solaris's inetd only allows 5 parameters to any spawned program. This means a wrapper script is needed. So to summarise what seems to work for me on our Solaris 7 box: 1. Create a wrapper script called for example /usr/local/bin/Xvnc-inetd which simply execs Xvnc with the desired arguments: #!/bin/sh exec /usr/local/bin/Xvnc -inetd -securitytypes=none -depth 24 \ -nolisten named -query localhost -once 3>/dev/null 2. Add an entry in /etc/services for the desired port, e.g.: vnc50 5950/tcp 3. Add an entry to /etc/inetd.conf, not forgetting to kill -HUP the inetd process: vnc50 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/bin/Xvnc-inetd Xvnc-inetd 4. Make sure /usr/dt/config/Xaccess etc allow XDMCP service from the local host. 5. Connect a viewer to :50 and you should be away... RE: Hello, I am a beginner, in need of ALOT of help.
Bart This is because you and your father are not on the same network. Had you done a search on the list you would have found several hundreds emails sent to the list asking the same question. So here it is in a nutshell. The easiest way to connect to your father's pc is to have your father subscribe to a dynamic DNS service, where he will set up a domain for himself.usually something like twright.home.net. A small utility will run on his pc that will, on a regular basis update the dynamic DNS service with his WAN ip address of the router. He will also need to make a change to his router to allow port forwarding of the WinVNC ports to his internal pc's ipaddress. Once that is setup all you have to do is type in the dynamic DNS domain setup for him and it will redirect it to his router, then to his pc. Two things you also need to remember. If his router has remote administration (and most do) then you can setup the port forwarding for him. Two make sure that if he is using WinXP sp2 that you have him either turn off the firewall or open the VNC port so that you can connect to the VNC server on his end. I thought RealVNC would be a great tool to help me support him, while at the same time, help him to learn along with me by watching what was happening on his screen in real time. I had him load Free RealVNC (full install) on his computer, had him run the REALVNC server, and I cannot connect. I have read thru the FAQ and troubleshooting, and they do not seem to be specific enough to help me successfully handle this. 4.1.1 Build problems on AIX
I am attempting to compile VNC 4.1.1 on AIX 5.2. I've unpacked the file, went to ftp.xfree86.org and downloaded X86free 4.5.0 so that when unpacked it went into the xc dir. Went to the "unix" dir, did the configure and can build all the initial files no problem. Then went to xc to build the Xvnc. I tried all this with and without the patch file being applied. I should mention I am using gcc-3.3.3 by setting the CC environment variable. Question 1: I had to edit xc/config/cf/ibmLib.rules in the following section. There are apparently too many "#else" statements and I am not sure what this is really meant to be. Also, in the second block-o-code (after the first #else), the FONTLIB line is wrapped and "R" missing from BUILDLIBDI? Can someone tell me what this section should look like? (For my attempts below, I took out the first #else and added the "R" and unwrapped the line). # if OSMajorVersion < 4 /* * SharedFontLibReferences - shared font libraries */ # ifndef SharedLibReferences # define SharedLibReferences() @@\ DEPFONTLIB = /**/@@\ FONTLIB = -L$(FREETYPELIBDIR) _Use(-lXfont,$(FONTLIBSRC)/libXfont.a) @@\ LintLibReferences(XFONT,Xfont,$(FONTLIBSRC)) # endif #else # ifndef SharedFontLibReferences # define SharedFontLibReferences() @@\ DEPFONTLIB = /**/@@\ FONTLIB = -L$(FREETYPELIBDIR) _Use(-lXfont,$(BUILDLIBDIR)/font.imp) $(BUILDLIBDI )/libXfont.a)) @@\ LintLibReferences(XFONT,Xfont,$(FONTLIBSRC)) # endif # else # ifndef SharedLibReferences # define SharedLibReferences(varname, libname, libsource, revname, rev) @@\ Concat3(DEP,varname,LIB) = /**/ @@\ Concat(varname,LIB) = _Use(Concat(-l,libname),Concat($(BUILDLIBDIR),/libname.imp) Concat3($(BUILDLIBDIR),/lib,libname.a)) @@\ LintLibReferences(varname, libname, libsource) # endif # endif I also had to edit ibm.cf to change the xcl to gcc. ultra vnc trouble with win2k sp4 over sonic wall
I have read many of the posts on the site, but not all, so I appologize if the question I am asking has been resolved for someone else already. I am using ultra vnc 1.0.0 to connect to our server at work, and it works well. I know the external IP address for our server and can use that or the internal IP to connect from inside the network or from home. The sonic wall firewall has been configued to ip forward to our server. But I need to be able to connect to my pc at work from home via Ultra vnc. I have gone to the sonic wall admin page and under"add services" input VNC port 5995 to 5999 with tcp(6) and upd(17) both and under the "rules" I have Allow VNC from *(all) To "MYINTERNALIP@(LAN), so in effect all requests made to port 5900 to 5995 go to Lan, and 5995 to 5999 should get forwarded to my pc at work. But needless to say, I can not even connect from VNC on my lan to my pc much less from the outside. But I can always reach the Lan from my pc or home. I do not have "remote desktop" capability under "my system" in the "control panel" so I do not know if it my windows 2000 sp4 that keeps me from connecting or if I did not do the port forward correctly. If you can help please try. Tommy ___ VNC-List mailing list VNC-List@realvnc.com To remove yourself from the list visit: http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list
Re: ultra vnc trouble with win2k sp4 over sonic wall
Angelo Thank you for your response. I figured out that my port was being blocked by Micro pc-cillin, the virus proction I was using. Now that I have that resolved, I can connect from my Lan to my other 2 workstations via the internal ip address using vnc. But now my question is how do I connect to them from the outside using the external IP address for my fire wall. Every time I connect from the outside using vnc, it connects to the same computer, even though I have set up the sonic wall to allow access to 3 different stations using different internal IP addresses and 3 different ports. I tried to connect using my external Ip address and port together and it failed. VNC for Customer Help-desk application
We are currently using WebEx to support customers running our Windows application. There are lots of reasons we want to move to VNC: WebEx isn't cheap, has far more capacity than we need, and installs their activex component in IE, which requires SP2 users to spot and confirm the IE activex security warning, and at times, change IE security settings. Installing the WebEx Java server requires administrators rights. WebEx is slow to load on the user's machine and, from what we've seen of VNC, may be slower in mouse and screen updates, etc. etc. We're thinking of migrating to VNC, using SmartCode's ActiveX component on our customers' machines, and then realvnc client on ten support engineers' desks. Planning ahead, we built a function into our application in the field so that when a user hits a function key, it downloads a customer specific data file and/or exe from the corporate server. (The data file is created at the time of the call and can contain an IP address, etc...) We're hoping to use this capacity to install on the customer's machine the activex server and then establish communication with a help desk client. We'd like this to be a totally hands-off process for our customers, with everything being done by our application. Is our expectation of VNC realistic? What's the probability that we can use a vanilla configuration that will run without firewall problems on most corporate servers (without opening ports)? What would that configuration be? Are there other solutions besides the SmartCode ActiveX that we should consider? We don't want the user to face any third-party UI, or do any configuring. Any web sites that any of you would suggest to learn further about the issues we're facing. Sorry for the long-winded email. I hope this list is an appropriate place for a newbie post like this. RE: VNC for Customer Help-desk application
You guys are right... I misunderstood what s-code's activex was. Yury at s-code told me yesterday that what I saw on their site is an activex **Viewer**. He said they are working on an ActiveX version of the server. I dunno, guys, from the initial reading I've done (and the responses I've seen) the impression like getting VNC to run on a remote computer in some cases will require more configuration than we're willing (or able) to have our customers do. We just can't have our users having to type in IP addresses or go to sysadmins asking for admin rights to do an install or for ports to be opened... (even though WebEx occasionally requires that too!) It sounds like we might be able to figure out a fairly reliable way to do a hands-off install on a customers' machine, launch the server and even get it to punch out a connection to our helpdesk. But, we're nervous about idiosyncratic local configuration hurdles that would prevent installation or the connection. The group on this list is a great reservoir of experience. If I may ask, what is *your* experience getting VNC servers installed and connecting on computers outside your organization's network? How often do you have to handhold a user, having them do manual configurations? I can see that VNC is an enormously popular tool... but is it more for digit-heads (a term which I user respectfully!) than for turn-key, hands-off installation and connection? If I'm abusing this list by trying to initiate a discussion like this... or if it's a dead horse that doesn't deserve any more abuse, my apologies. In that case, I'll refrain... Mouse syncronizatoin
I've tried QEMU and Bochs and both work fine at the console. But when used over a VNC connection the mouse just runs wild. I understand this to be an issue with mouse synchronization. As near as I can tell, neither of those groups has a solution to this problem. Not being a programmer, I don't know whether or not this is an issue with QEMU/Bochs or VNC. Does both the server AND client have to support relative pointer motion, or just one of them? Re: Mouse syncronizatoin
Thank you James. This may not be the place for this question, but I downloaded the Linux version of the server and the windows version of the viewer. The server version is asking for a license code that I don't have--I thought a "trial" license code was included with the distribution (there's also a file called LICENSE.txt in the extracted directory--that file's empty). Am I missing something? (Also note that I sent an email via your web site, when I download the software, asking for a trial license. I did this yesterday and haven't received word back yet.) ~ Tom James Weatherall wrote: > Tom, > > Both ends need to support it. Re: Mouse syncronizatoin
My bad... I didn't link to look on the site for the trial license. I assume that relative pointer motion is enabled by default, is this correct? Using the Enterprise edition on both the server and the client had no effect on the problem--that is, the mouse still runs amok when these programs (QEMU or Bochs) are used inside a VNC desktop. ~ Tom James Weatherall wrote: > Tom, > > Please visit the UNIX licensing page > (http://www.realvnc.com/products/enterprise/unixlicence.html) to obtain a > VNC Enterprise Edition for UNIX trial license. > > Regards, > > Wez @ RealVNC Ltd. > > > >>-Original Message- >>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Smith >>Sent: 26 January 2006 15:32 >>To: vnc-list@realvnc.com >>Subject: Re: Mouse syncronizatoin >> >>Thank you James. >> >>This may not be the place for this question, but I downloaded >>the Linux >>version of the server and the windows version of the viewer. >>The server >>version is asking for a license code that I don't have--I thought a >>"trial" license code was included with the distribution >>(there's also a >>file called LICENSE.txt in the extracted directory--that >>file's empty). >> >>Am I missing something? VNC 3.3.7 uninstallation issue
Hi, this is the first time I have had to post (I presume this will turn out ok) I have an issue when trying to uninstall VNC 3.3.7. When uninstalling the program it says that it cannot remove/uninstall the WINVNC service. The error message comes back as "Access Denied". The installation then continues but it leaves behind the service. This has happened on both w2k, w2k3 and XP machines. However I am logged onto the machine as an administrator, this is not just one pc. We have tried this on a number of machines and it comes back with the same error message. You cannot even start/stop the service when it is installed as it comes back with the same message. We have no idea what user installed the software (so there is no chance of logging on as them to uninstall it). Are there any other ways around it? Using VPN with Free Edition 4.1
VNC Gurus, Here's my situation. I'm trying to use VNC as a way around performance problems with VPN on satellite DSL (which really sucks, BTW). The basic idea is that I have an extra laptop at a friend's house, connected to the internet via 'real' DSL and running VNC Server 4.1 Free Edition. If can VNC into that laptop and use it to establish the VPN connection with work, then my (home) satellite connection would be constrained by the VPN connection. Anyway, I can successfully use VNC Viewer on my home laptop to connect to the laptop running VNC Server at my friend's house, but as soon as I establish a Cisco VPN connection from the VNC sever laptop to my work LAN, my VNC connection between both laptops is terminated. Here's the interesting part: When I mouse over the VNC icon in the tool tray on the laptop running VNC Server - still connected to my work LAN on VPN - there are two IP addresses shown: a new VPN address, plus the original IP address of the laptop running VNC Server. I can log right back into the VNC Server laptop using the new IP address, but since these are dynamically generated for each VPN session I have no idea what that IP is going to be until the VPN connection is made - and then my VNC connection is terminated before I even know wha tthe new IP is! Any ideas? Are there VNC setting/config changes I can make to get around this? At a minimum, is there a log file that VNC keeps where the new VPN connection IP would be listed on the VNC server laptop? Other info: Both laptops are WinXP, Cisco VPN client is 4.8, VNC software is 4.1 Free Edition. Use the viewer to access and then you will see a pop-up asking if you want to grant permissions to VNC allow access, and your done. Slow VNC startup for Solaris
I recently installed the 4.1.2 server on Sun Solaris ,to be started via inetd etc. It *does* work, but startup speed is very slow compared to Linux and windows. It opens a window with a basic gray background, after about 10 seconds the background turns black, then it sits for over a minute. Then the logon window comes up and you can logon. Once in, the speed is usable, but again seems less than to Linux. It has this behavior when using a Linux viewer to the Sun server and from the windows viewer to the Sun server. Linux to windows and windows to Linux are very fast to startup. It does it with both the pre-compiled version and with one I compiled myself. Any help appreciated... tom ___ VNC-List mailing list VNC-List@realvnc.com To remove yourself from the list visit: http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list

WinVNC 3.3.3 Registry Settings
Hello. I'm a new user to WinVNC and I'm hoping someone could shed some light on something that is very confusing to me - as there seems to be no consistency to this... First off WinVNC works with no problem when installed on any of my clients (98% Win98SE/ 2% WIN 2000) so long as I don't change anything. Problem is, I need to disable the properties and the ability to close the VNC otherwise its too easy for a user to tamper with it. I found out that you should add the DWORD strings "AllowShutdown" and "AllowProperties" to the HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\ORL\WinVNC3\Default settings. The problem is of the 5 clients I'm testing the software with right now, 2 of them work fine until you add those registry settings then they simply don't work. A 3rd client, let's call this client "Client A", you can set the password thru admin tools, click apply, click ok. I chose to "Install Default Reg Settings" (because this is what I assumed made the registry settings "appear" in RegEdit). I re-start. Go into the regedit to add "AllowShutdown" and "AllowProperties" and there is nothing in the registry AT ALL for WinVNC3 (at the path mentioned above). And if I go ahead and add "AllowShutdown" and "AllowProperties" and restart...now VNC will tell me that there is no password set and properties are locked. Huh? Password was set before, now its magically not there anymore? What to be more confused? :) --- Client A is the SAME EXACT COMPUTER (same hardware components, same OS, same software) as the two final clients that work flawlessly W/ the registry settings edited to disallow shutdown or tampering with the properties. Am I doing something wrong? Is there an order you are suppose to follow when installing and setting up WinVNC on a client? Why all the in consistency from machine to machine? Hey, sorry my post is huge an I'm asking for a lot here, but I do appreciate it if anyone even sheds a little logic to my confusion. Thanks. -Tom ___ VNC-List mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list

How to use VNC to access multiple computers behind linksys router for free
It took me a while to figure this out, but I hope it helps someone else out there. It is wonderful and free. I use Fixed IPs in my network at the office. I have a fixed IP to connect to my ISP. I want to use VNC viewer to access my main computers (servers and my computer from home) Suppose I want to access three different computers A. my computer at 192.168.1.3 B my server at 192.168.1.4 C my backup at 192.168.1.5 and VNC is already running as a service on each of these Suppose my fixed IP to the ISP is 122.133.144.5 1 setup the Linksys router with port range forwarding like this VNC-1 5900 to 5900 TCPIP 192.168.1.3 Enabled This means I can now access my computer by using this in VNC viewer from home 122.133.144.5:5900 VNC-2 5901 to 5901 TCPIP 192.168.1.4 Enabled This means I can now access my server by using this in VNC viewer from home 122.133.144.5:5901 with one catch. This means the port 5901 will be forwarded to my server, which means my VNC service on the server needs to be looking for 5901. To do this change the settings for the server's VNC service to use display 1 (the default is 0) VNC-3 5902 to 5902 TCPIP 192.168.1.5 Enabled This means I can now access my backup by using this in VNC viewer from home 122.133.144.5:5902 with one catch. This means the port 5902 will be forwarded to my backup, which means my VNC service needs on my backup needs to be looking for 5902. To do this change the settings for the backup VNC service to use display 2 (the default is 0) You might be able to do this through the web by setting up the java ports (5800) but I just use the 5900 and make sure I have a VNC viewer handy Tom Gilbert Network Administrator ___ VNC-List mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list

Thanks for the information. It took 5 minutes to install (after removing the other vnc programs) and permitted me to transfer a 32 MB file over one minute within five minutes of starting. Not bad. Neville, Two things here. 1) What IPs are you using? Are you trying to use the one the typical 192.X.X.X LAN IP? Or are you using the WAN address? 2) Have you set up your router to allow connections on those ports? I suppose another thing would be what exact IP are you trying to connect to. There's whatsmyip.org, but I believe that shows you the IP of your router. If you use a Linksys router, I know how to help you, but I'm unsure how other routers work. Okay, I am at home now and can troubleshoot my router better now. I used VNC to remote into work. Now...can I remote back to my home computer using the VNC Viewer at my work? RE: (no subject)
A guess: You need your friend to run the following while sitting at his computer: http://whatismyipaddress.com Then have him read the number to you. Then type that number into your VNC Viewer and attempt to connect. A Port may be required, not sure about that one. Viola! It works like a charm. Of course, logging in to the VNC at work, and the logging in to home creates an interesting nest of windows with some bizarre mouse results! (Work shows home, which shows work showing home, which shows home showing work showing home showing work etc). Now -- is there a registry setting somewhere so I can change the settings for the VNC Server to use a different port (instead of command line launch)? RE: Can ping but not connect through VNC viewer
I spent HOURS on this over the weekend. Seems what this boils down to is my MSN DSL 1000 modem does not allow port-forwardingnor does Microsoft allow you to configure the firewall to do so. Any attempt to do this apparently FRIES the firmware on the modem really really badly. Tom -Original Message- From: Scott C. Re: cannot get to the computer behind the firewall
Have you set up port forwarding on your router? - Original Message - From: "Tom La Velle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 9:40 PM Subject: cannot get to the computer behind the firewall > I am trying to connect to the server from a remote location. I know that I have it configured correctly because I can connect to the vnc server over the lan. But how do I access the computer running the server from a remote location over the internet. I have a dsl line with a dynamically assigned ip address. I have a wireless router with two computers connected to a workgroup. I do have a dynamic dns service running so I always have a url that resolves to whatever my currently assigned ip address is. Whenever i type in the url (http://smilingdog.hopto.org), I get a failed to connect to server message. If I type in my current IP address, I also get the same message. RE: Firewall
John: Thank you for following-up with me on this. I genuinely appreciate your time and effort helping me and the other people on this mailing list! :) It has been H*LL. :) What it boils down to is: (note, when I say broadband modem, router and firewall are implied) 1) At my home I am signed-up for MSN Broadband, via Qwest Telco. 2) As per MSN Broadband Support (I spent an hour with them on the phone)...the broadband modem is NOT configurable (read "no port forwarding"). 3) Thus, nobody and connect to my VNC Server. 4) Thus, I am moving to another broadband service called MStar. 5) Will take about 3 weeks to switch over. 6) MStar says their broadband modem supports firewall and router configuration (read "yes port forwarding") 7) Once I switch over to MStar all of my ranting, raving, moaning, etc. should be moot. RH9 Linux + vncserver services.
RH9 + Xvnc services: need help getting it to go upon boot. I can't figure out how to run RH9's Xvnc service so it'll boot up on my user account's system bootup sequence. I go to System Settings -> Server Settings -> Services. vncserver is checked. It says Xvnc is stopped. I try to hit start or restart, prompt says: 'vncserver start successful', but it still says in the status window 'Xvnc stopped'. I can't figure out how, but I did get this to work before. Now I'm having no luck. This is rather key to me as this system will not have a monitor or keyboard/mouse hooked up to it soon. Thank you for your help. AuthHost in win2K registry
Hello all, I am trying to restrict access to our VNC server through explicit IP checking. I read that a registry entry for "AuthHosts" can handle this, but I am hesitant to mess with the registry as I have little experience with it and I cannot risk bringing down our server. Is there a utility that can handle this for me? Can anyone point me to a reference for how to do this step by step? It seems I can add a "REG_SZ string" but I have no idea what that means. Somebody mentioned once that there is some place I can go on the web where my open ports can be detected? Specifically it can detect if VNC can see any open ports to connect to.
