I spent HOURS on this over the weekend.

Seems what this boils down to is my MSN DSL 1000 modem does not allow 
port-forwarding....nor does Microsoft allow you to configure the firewall to do so.  
Any attempt to do this apparently FRIES the firmware on the modem really really badly.
