Bart This is because you and your father are not on the same network. Had you done a search on the list you would have found several hundreds emails sent to the list asking the same question.
So here it is in a nutshell. The easiest way to connect to your father's pc is to have your father subscribe to a dynamic DNS service, where he will set up a domain for himself.....usually something like twright.home.net. A small utility will run on his pc that will, on a regular basis update the dynamic DNS service with his WAN ip address of the router. He will also need to make a change to his router to allow port forwarding of the WinVNC ports to his internal pc's ipaddress. Once that is setup all you have to do is type in the dynamic DNS domain setup for him and it will redirect it to his router, then to his pc. Two things you also need to remember. If his router has remote administration (and most do) then you can setup the port forwarding for him. Two make sure that if he is using WinXP sp2 that you have him either turn off the firewall or open the VNC port so that you can connect to the VNC server on his end. Hope this helps Tom Wright -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bartholomew Reed Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2005 6:37 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Hello, I am a beginner, in need of ALOT of help. Hello, here is the situation. I just downloaded and am using RealVNC to connect SUCCESSFULLY to my computers in my wireless home network (when we are both behind the firewall of my router). My dad lives in North Carolina, and I usually try to walk him thru computer issues over the phone (usually adding to the confusion). I thought RealVNC would be a great tool to help me support him, while at the same time, help him to learn along with me by watching what was happening on his screen in real time. I had him load Free RealVNC (full install) on his computer, had him run the REALVNC server, and I cannot connect. I have read thru the FAQ and troubleshooting, and they do not seem to be specific enough to help me successfully handle this. Here is what he has on his computer in North Carolina.: DSL service from BellSouth Linksys WRT54GX Router I have Comcast Broadband With Microsoft Wireless Router. So here are my questions: How do I get it so that when I start a VNC Viewer session here, I can log into HIS network, to his computer in North Carolina? What address would I put in when the VNC Viewer asks me for asks me for Connection Details (when I try to just type his IP address, it gives me the error: unable to connect to host: a socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network. (10051) By making any of the changes that I know I will have to make, will that in any way, hinder my ability to get on my other computers on my network at home? I apologize for my basic questions, I and I thank you all in advance for your help and guidance! Bart Reed -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
