[RBW] Re: Building my new Bombadil... at last!!!

2009-12-08 Thread Orthie251
Well, here is the last update for tonight... it's past midnight and I
have to go to work tomorrow... :-(

Finished installing the drivetrain:
- Shimano XT low-normal rear derailer and XT front derailer. Had to
reverse the B-screw to clear the 12-36 rear cassette, since I'm not
using a Shadow rear derailer. Have yet to install the shifters and
cables, they'll go last after I tape the handlebar. The Shimano Dura-
Ace chain went at full length, no need to cut it.
- Installed the front brake, Paul polished Neo-Retro. To get the 3"
recommended in the instructions above the tire for the cable hanger, I
had to use a regular brake cable as the hanger cable that came with
the brakes was too short. May need to get a longer one just so it has
the little tab to facilitate engaging/disengaging it. I also used Velo-
Orange Rene Herse style cable hangers, instead of the standard (ugly)
ones that come with the brakes. Took my sweet time to set up
everything, we'll see tomorrow how it works...

Added the photos from this last part to the set:

Tomorrow we shall continue...

Re: [RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-08 Thread Bruce
One of the great things about merino wool is that it continues to keep you
warm, even when you do sweat and it gets wet. You will perspire with exercise,
but the proper amount of venting will allow you to avoid being drenched in
sweat inside your kit. This is why the outer jackets have zippered slits you
open of close as needed.

figuring out how to dress warm enough, but not sweat so as to not end
up with the chills later as I start to cool down.

You have to spend a little effort to look around if you want to do better than
the prices on the wool websites. SOmetimes, list memebers here will have stuff

baselayers on sale at Backcountryoutlet right now.

[RBW] Black Friday Ride Report

2009-12-08 Thread rperks
Still Catching up on the photo backlog.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36302...@n08/sets/72157622960339922/

The friday after Thanksgiving I made it out for a fun morning picture
ride. I was visiting family on the central California coast for the
Holiday weekend, and rode this loop, with a little extra thrown in:

www.slobc.org/route/RideServer.php?Label =pozo&SubDir=...

There is a bit of long straight out and back from the house to start
the loop. The day started off at the 30F but quickly warmed up into
the 50F range to make for a beautiful Winter day. The trees were
starting to show their fall color. The usual farm and wildlife was out
in force as usual, cows, sheep, birds etc. The standouts were a HUGE
pig in the middle of a climb and a group of dear including a 4 piont
buck. Pretty much a perfect morning.

Riv content is in the controls: RM013 bars (wide), shifters, brakes
and Hobo bag

I am excited to get the Roadeo out on this loop, probably be a couple
months untill I am back up there though.

Rob

Keep in mind the new wool base layers are not priced the way they are
because the people at Ibex and Patagonia are living large on motor
yachts anchored by a casino in Monaco.

In order to be comfortable, base layers need to start with relatively
rare merino wool and then go through a labor intensive spinning
process.

The end result is worth the money in my opinion. You get a base layer
that does not itch the way a regular wool garment does but does not
wind of stinking (no matter how many times you wash them) the way the
plastic layers do. The fact many of the merino wool providers work to
keep their production as clean as possibly is topping on the cake.

I have close to a dozen, most of them as new, the others almost as
new, crew, button and turtlenecks, in a variety of fashionable colors,
each $4.69 from the nearby Goodwill.

If you do buy from thrift stores, be careful to check for moth holes.

read:

RE: [RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-08 Thread Frederick, Steve
The best lightweight wind shell I've used is this from Voler:

http://www.velowear.com/products/1010277PRTXSM.aspx

Very light, packable and durable for it's weight.

They do the same basic jacket in several designs/colors--look for the mesh
sides and reversable zipper which are key. (and which make it very breathable)
Not waterproof, tho. And sized snug so size up for a roomy fit.

I am really appreciating this thread. Here in ATX we have had
unusually cold and wet days. It is making my Texas blood feel thinner
than it already is. I still have not mastered the "perfect" riding
combo. But, I am gathering some great ideas here. For one, I realized
recently that I need more of a light shell instead of the outer layer
of the parka I have been wearing. The trickiest part seems to be
figuring out how to dress warm enough, but not sweat so as to not end
up with the chills later as I start to cool down.

I'm sure it did. In the coast range east of Silicon Valley, on Page

Fantastic! What a great ride. It looks absolutely balmy compared to
our predicted high of 14 today. Still might get out on the bike for
quick jaunt though!!

Thanks for posting such a great series of pictures!

[RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-08 Thread Patrick in VT
my favorite shells in no particular order:

rapha lightweight softshell: great for fast cold weather rides/
training - windproof, breathable and fairly water resistant. the fit
is snug - which is nice on those cold, windy days.

swrve softshell hoodie: what I commute in most days - warm,
windproof, great fit and cut, allows for layering, looks nice off the
bike. also has some huge rear pockets. i tend to overheat in this,
however, if i'm pushing too hard. i also wish it covered my neck.
have to wear a neck gaiter or scarf with it when it dips below 30.

patagonia climbing jacket: i forget which model, but it has a nice
cut (long tail, shorter up front) and some built in stretchy fabric,
so it's great for cycing. very windproof and waterproof, but long pit
zips allow for some breathability. it gets used on and off the bike
quite a bit.

Not that it helps right now, but there are usually very good deals to
be had on wool stuff come spring. If you plan ahead, you can stock up
on base layers for pretty cheap. Ibex also occasionally has good sales
too. $60 *is* a lot for a t-shirt, but if you can keep the moths out,
they will last a long time. I have a ~15-year-old Smartwool top that
is stained and has a couple of moth holes, but is still warm and
usable otherwise.

Re: [RBW] a snowy mt. diablo

2009-12-08 Thread erik jensen
Happy to share and thanks the compliments!

jinxed: 14 degrees is cold. It was easy enough to stay warm on the way up,
but after the sun went down things got brisk. I have ample winter cycling
gear leftover from my previous home (omaha), so I was able to stay
moderately comfy with lobster gloves and the like. Still, hard not to shiver
coasting 11 miles downhill when it's below freezing. In retrospect, I should
have worn my lake boots.

Eric: I used two cameras: a ricoh grd-II in the front pocket of my rando bag
for quick captures; and a Canon 40d with a 17-85 lens and a polarizer for
the landscapes.

Cheers,

erik

[RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-08 Thread shawn
It seems based on the thread thus far, wool is ideal. One thing I am
not clear on is, if a wool base layer is worn with cotton over it,
will the base layer still wick away the sweat, or will the cotton soak
it up? Or is wearing multiple layers of wool the only option to stay
warm and dry?
Coming from a cost perspective, it seems if one can afford just one
wool base layer and then wear regular clothes (i.e.-cotton) over it
then it might be a little easier to "swallow" the cost of the wool.

Funny you should mention Chicago, that's why I bought the parka in the
first place. My family is strewn all about the North Shore, Evanston,
Willmette, Morton Grove, Glenview, etc...

Yeah, I was hoping I could get away with the parka so as to avoid
buying something else for riding. The lotion is a great idea. Here in
Texas, putting lotion on in the summer always makes me sweat, but
maybe in these colder months it would really help insulate. I'll give
it a try.

Now, the _last_ person I'd take cold weather advice from is someone who
lives in California, but...

Cotton ain't the thing in cold weather. Generally, it will absorb moisture
faster than it can ever evaporate it. The evaporative cooling is a great
thing during the hot months, but what you want to do is stay dry.

The reason wool (and the better synthetics) work is that they get the
moisture away from your skin. In the case of using a cotton outer layer,
you basically are wearing a thin sponge which will hold moisture. This may
freeze which actually will help you stay warm, but the evaporative process
will generally drop your temp faster than another wool (or wool blend, or
even synthetic).

If you are trying to minimize expense, I'd recommend finding a smooth, comfy
100% merino layer for next-to-skin (and you won't have to wash it that
often, so you can get away with one), then look for blends or less-comfy
(i.e cheaper) 100% wool pieces for additional insulation. The "scratchy"
(shorter) fibers of the cheaper wool isn't as noticeable on an outer layer.

hope that helps,

- Jim

I agree with this - even more than in the summer, winter riding is
about moisture management. If it's a short ride, you can wear anything
and be fine. If it's a longer ride, and especially if it's long with
periodic stops, you'll get deeply chilled if your clothes are at all
damp from sweat. Winter riding always surprises non-cyclists with how
little clothing is required for a cold-weather ride. I need warm
gloves and shoes and my ears covered, but other than that, just 2-3
thin layers and my torso and legs are fine. It's miserable being
sweaty on a cold day.

Like Patrick said, thrift stores are a great source of thin wool
sweaters that make great middle layers. I've ridden a lot of winter
days with a wool t-shirt, thin $3 wool sweater (thinner than a
sweatshirt), and a light windbreaker jacket.

On the bottom, my best winter clothing are some standard Nashbar brand
tights. They're very warm, especially under a pair of pants, and were
actually made in the US (bought maybe 5 years ago, not sure of the
current stock). More windproof and less bulky than my otherwise nicer
part-wool Patagonia tights. I do often wear cotton pants over tights
in the winter, but my legs aren't really sweating like i am on top. I
rarely wear cotton on top on cold rides.

[RBW] Quickbeam Arrived Ten Minutes Ago!

2009-12-08 Thread Robert F. Harrison
My QB arrived about 5 minutes ago. I went in to work very early so I could
run the jobs I absolutely must get done on Tuesdays (without making my
co-workers do them). Then I headed home as soon as I saw the "out for
delivery" notice on the UPS site.

About 10am HST I got a call from the UPS driver asking if I would be home
later. I said yes, except that between 11-2pm I needed to be away and the
manager of my condo would be in. He asked me to please make sure because the
box, while not heavy, was bulky. I asked when he thought he'd make it and he
said not till afternoon. Sigh.

Then he drove up. I could hear him joking with someone outside saying, "I
told him this afternoon." I immediately broke out the camera and snapped my
box being offloaded. It'll be part of a flickr album later.

He brought the box up to my apartment and I gave him a cold soda and told
him he was my hero for the day. Apparently I'm going to have more than one
hero though because, as you guys said, the bike is packed immaculately. And
unfortunately I'm going to have to leave it that way for a bit as I have to
dash out for my companies annual anniversary banquet. Folks with years of
service in multiples of five are being feted. I made ten years and they are
pretty insistent about showing up.

Luckily it'll be over around 1:30pm so I can ride home on my other single
speed (now my "rain bike") and start putting things together. There doesn't
appear to be a whole lot to do (thankfully), so I'll probably be able to
take it out for spin before dark.

I'd love to stay and play with it, but the sooner I get this luncheon over
with, the sooner I can play with my "anniversary present."

Aloha for now!

Re: [RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-08 Thread Bruce
When considering the cost of wool, bear in mind that it need not be washed each
time you use it. Hang it up and let it dry. Then wear it again. and again. You
get the idea. When to wash? Opinions vary, but mine is when I can start to
smell an odor, it's time. Salt is no trouble. Just brush it off and keep going.

Ixnay on cotton in any layer, for cold weather. In warmer weather, a cotton
seersucker or waffle weave shirt is quite nice over a thin wool base. For icier
days, and where wool costs more than you can do for 2 layers, use polyproylene
insulating garments over the wool. They probably won't stink either.

packing and post those as well. I regularly ship my bike for tours
and thought I'd gotten good, but when my Atlantis showed up it was
fantastic how they'd packed it. I took photos, stored them on my
computer, only to lose the hard drive (argghh!) without back up. I'm
sure others would appreciate seeing how Riv does it. They've said
they're going to put up photos on their site but it's been a while.
You would be doing a public service, if you can restrain yourself!

2009-12-08 Thread George Schick
W-a-a-a-a-y back in the 60's when I was first developing (nope, no pun
intended) an interest in photography I picked up one of those "how-to"
paperbacks in a local bookstore. I don't remember much about
everything it had to say except for this one quip: "a box camera in
the hands of an expert will take better pictures than a Nikon in the
hands of a novice." (OK, for those of you too young to understand,
don't hassle me about the term "box camera").

Well, Erik here has produced the kind of photos that prove this
somewhat trite cliche to be correct. It's properly framing the
subject and capturing the moment that count the most. These pictures
are so fantastic that he could have taken them with a pin-hole camera
(again, I'm showing my age) and they'd still be great. Very nice job!

[RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

Good advice. Although in my case the salt stains get heavy pretty
quick. (I sweat a lot.) And they don't seem to brush out. Make up
for it with a number of wool tops.

For cotton a heavy Woolrich or Filson Alaska shirt work as a cover
layer in some conditions. Or at least I like the feel/look of them.

But I'm a wimp. Definitely not out riding in this winter storm.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Arrived Ten Minutes Ago!

2009-12-08 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I'm not much of a photographer, but I did my best. I'll be honest, it was
tough; I wanted to rip the box open and build it up immediately. I tried to
slow down a bit and take some images along the way.

I've put the whole thing on my flickr page at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157622964863214/

The sets starts with the bike being taken off of the UPS truck...yes, I kept
checking the street. :-)

I hope the images document the packing enough for folks to at least get some
idea of how they do it!

Here's what happened...

I didn't have time to do anything when the bike arrived besides open the box
to be sure there was actually a bike in there. I snapped a couple of shots,
then dragged the box inside so I could get off to a luncheon and go back to
work for a bit.

After what seemed like a really long time I made it home. It was really only
about 3pm at this point.

I then began pulling things out of the box, photographing as best I could as
I went.

Once it was all in pieces everywhere I made some executive decisions. I
could either build it up completely, putting on the fenders (the SKS silver
plastic model) and the Nitto front rack, or I could get it mostly together
and go for a ride.

I chose the ride of course.

It took about an hour of unpacking and building before I was ready for a
test ride around the block.

For those of you who wonder, the bike was packed superbly. Even the plastic
bubble wrap was cut precisely to fit around stays and the like. I was very
impressed. Still am.

After a ride around the block I took it back upstairs and packed a little
kit just in case I had trouble, readjusted the seat and handlebars, and took
off down the road. Within a block I realized I was going to have to get swap
sides on the gearing. I had Rich build my wheels to be a bit better than
stock because I'm a bit of clydesdale. They have the standard QB Suzue hubs
rear and aft but Synergy rims instead of the Mavic. I have a White dual
16-19 on one side and no name 22 on the flip. Up front is the standard
32-40, for now at least. When bike shipped it was running 32-22. I could
climb the walls on the side of my building but was outrunning myself on the
flat Honolulu streets.

No trouble switching - took a minute the first time.

Because I had no 700c tubes around I went to one of the several LBSs in the
area. I'm not going to mention it because the guys were a bit confused by my
Quickbeam. "Dude, that's way, way too big for you." "How much does it
weigh?" "Did you take the derailleurs off?" In short they didn't know what
to make of it.

After getting a couple of tubes I was off. I rode down the Ala Moana Park
and then to Kakaako Waterfront Park, then home.

The ride was...superb. That's the only way to describe it. I did have to
adjust the seat height a couple of times...probably will again tomorrow.

This bike is nimble, easy to ride, and very, very comfortable. It is,
without a doubt, the best bike I've ever owned and the best single speed
I've ever ridden. I rode a couple of geared bikes at Rivendell last March so
those take the cake as best geared bikes. :-)

I've got to work out some details yet. There's the front rack, the fenders,
and I'll have to do something about lighting. I'm thinking of getting a SON
at some point because this really is my commuter and I ride a lot at night.
But I'll worry about lighting later. For now I'll get by with what I've got.

Aloha!

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Arrived Ten Minutes Ago!

2009-12-08 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I guess I should note that when I first straddle the bike I was terribly
worried that it was too big. I'm a 95 pbh and this is a 66cm QB. The thing
is, I could feel the top tube pretty high up there and had a moment.

Then I realized I wasn't wearing shoes. I put on my normal riding shoes
(just plain old New Balance walking shoes really) and tried again. It still
felt a bit big but then I lifted the bike and really jammed it up there as
that's as high as it's going to get. The bike was quite a ways off the
ground so really there's plenty of clearance.

I guess that's what happens to new Riv owners the first time they experience
a properly sized frame. :-)

As for the actually fit when riding...perfect. Really perfect.

It's dark now and as I don't have my lighting worked out so I'm done for the
day. I had a nice 10 mile ride though which was enough to absolutely fall in
love. I'll be riding as a commuter the rest of the week and hopefully this
weekend I'll get to try it on a longer ride, maybe Kailua and back (60 miles
or so).

Aloha!

Your photos made me feel like I was getting the bike! I remember the
frustration of receiving mine during a lunch break and only having about 20
minutes to rummage through the excellent packing. The rest of THAT work day
was excruciatingly slow!

It's a beauty, and you WILL love it.

Congrats!

The sets starts with the bike being taken off of the UPS truck...yes, I
kept checking the street. :-)

I hope the images document the packing enough for folks to at least get
some idea of how they do it!

Here's what happened...

I didn't have time to do anything when the bike arrived besides open the
box to be sure there was actually a bike in there. I snapped a couple of shots,
then dragged the box inside so I could get off to a luncheon and go back to
work for a bit.

After what seemed like a really long time I made it home. It was really
only about 3pm at this point.

I then began pulling things out of the box, photographing as best I could
as I went.

Once it was all in pieces everywhere I made some executive decisions. I
could either build it up completely, putting on the fenders (the SKS silver
plastic model) and the Nitto front rack, or I could get it mostly together and
go for a ride.

I had Rich build my wheels to be a bit better than stock
because I'm a bit of clydesdale. They have the standard QB Suzue hubs rear and
aft but Synergy rims instead of the Mavic. I have a White dual 16-19 on one
side and no name 22 on the flip. Up front is the standard 32-40, for now at
least. When bike shipped it was running 32-22. I could climb the walls on the
side of my building but was outrunning myself on the flat Honolulu streets.

No trouble switching - took a minute the first time.

Because I had no 700c tubes around I went to one of the several LBSs in the
area. I'm not going to mention it because the guys were a bit confused by my
Quickbeam. "Dude, that's way, way too big for you." "How much does it weigh?"
"Did you take the derailleurs off?" In short they didn't know what to make of
it.

It is,
without a doubt, the best bike I've ever owned and the best single speed I've
ever ridden. I rode a couple of geared bikes at Rivendell last March so those
take the cake as best geared bikes. :-)

I've got to work out some details yet. There's the front rack, the fenders

[RBW] Old pictures of First bike Tour.

2009-12-08 Thread manueljohnacosta

Heres a "little" story and pictures from this past summer of my first
bike tour down the pacific coast.

Five of us went on the tour. Three of us rode.
Me, a recent grad hoping for a job by the end of the tour.
Duy, 2- year sf kinesiology student transferring to long beach.
Ryan, 2 month cycling newbie that we force to come because we didn't
want to tour to be boring.
We started this ride from San Francisco end in Monterey. It being our
first tour we had no idea what to expect and no idea what would
happen. Both of my friends to my dismay decided to have their two
girlfriends come along with their cars carrying all of their stuff.
For myself, I decided that it wouldn't be a real tour unless I carried
all my gear. The general theme of the tour for us was hope. It was
written on the flag that I had on the back of my bike and written in
our hearts everyday we rode. For Duy, hope for a brighter and exciting
future at Long Beach State. For Ryan, hope for a more active and
healthier lifestyle. For me, hope for a job. Little did we know that
for those three days we rode down the coast, we gained a experience
that would last us a lifetime. Like any bike tour we finished with
way too many stories to tell to our friends back home and a sense of
calmness that can only come after biking for 3 hours in dead silence
and loving every minute of it. We all come out with a general
understanding that no matter how hard things may go, if you tried hard
things will always work out. Flash forward to the present.
For me, I have a fantastic job teaching a subject I love: Physical
Education.
For Duy, he's finishing up his kinesiology major at Long Beach and
cycles through La traffic everyday.
For Ryan, he's lost 30+ pounds and is running and cycling to school
daily.
For some cycling is a recreational hobby, for other's a lifestyle, for
my three friends and I cycling has become the major changing point in
our lives.

Sorry for the rant. Kinda of felt like reflecting. Here's the link the
the tour pictures.

And for those that are interested in Ryan's story, here's a link to

Re: [RBW] Re: Building my new Bombadil... at last!!!

2009-12-08 Thread Rene Sterental
Thanks Ray,

Today has been a very hectic day at work and then I had a date with my wife,
so I guess there won't be any work on the Bombadil tonight. However, I have
decided to return the Rampage 29x2.35 tires and replace them with the
Specialized El Capitan Control tires. I'm going to test a 2.2 in the front
and a 2.0 in the back. If the 2.2 is still too wide, then I'll exchange it
for another 2.0, but I think this combo will work well.

I'll have to arrange to meet with you on the weekend of the 19th or the
following week as I'll be on vacation for Christmas. I'm sure you'll want to
check the Bombadil in person... :-)
