Keep in mind the new wool base layers are not priced the way they are because the people at Ibex and Patagonia are living large on motor yachts anchored by a casino in Monaco. In order to be comfortable, base layers need to start with relatively rare merino wool and then go through a labor intensive spinning process. The end result is worth the money in my opinion. You get a base layer that does not itch the way a regular wool garment does but does not wind of stinking (no matter how many times you wash them) the way the plastic layers do. The fact many of the merino wool providers work to keep their production as clean as possibly is topping on the cake.
