A lovely feature of mail and voiceover
So I read my email frequently. I have an iPod 5 running ios 7.1.1. In the mail app, when I open a message, it usually reads the message right away. If not, all I have to do is flick up with two fingers or press VO-B and it reads the message starting at the beginning automatically. Even if I'm at the end of the screen at the compose button, it'll read the message. This is good when you're reading threads, and you delete while inside the message to go to the next one. Re: display brailles
Hi there Just because it doesn't tell you about voice over in the manual does not mean that it is not supported in voiceover. How do I know? Because my focus 14 blue is not listed in a discussion of using on the Mac in the focus 14 blue manual. The focus, at least in my manual, never says a word about voiceover except for the iPhone. However, my display is listed under its manufacturer in the voiceover manual for the Macintosh for supported Braille displays. So, you might look in the Getting Started with VoiceOver in Apple's website and see if it's on the list. You first look under the manufacturer, and then it has the displays under that manufacturer that are supported. In the case of Freedom Scientific, for example, they act the Mac does not exist almost because if tell them you are using a Mac they immediately tell you to call Apple. That's because they sell JAWS, of course, which is under Windows. Since there are about 40 braille displays listed under supported braille displays on Apple's website, I would be surprised if yours wasn't listed there. I was most impressed to see the braille displays listed there, some of which I never heard of before. Also, when you connected your display to your computer, did you get braille? If you did, then VoiceOver is recognizing your display and it's on the list somewhere, I'll bet because VoiceOver only recognizes those displays that are on the list of supported braille displays. I don't think you would see braille on your display if you are able to get braille on it without going through more complicated connections. I hope what I just said makes sense. Re: The Amazon App for IOS
Hi there I got the app on my iPhone and took it off because although I could read the listing of items, if you make the mistake of going to read the recipes, you can't get back to the items listing. My husband could do it without VoiceOver, but no way could I figure out how to get out of the recipe of how to prepare the item so that I could shop some more. I have a friend using Windows who claims that the Amazon site is fully accessible, but I found it a little awkward on my Mac. When I called and was referred to their technical people, I never received a phone call back from them. I was also very disappointed to find out that they don't have braille catalogs any more either. She said she could read me things, but no way did I want to sit on the phone with a reader since I know little about their products. I noticed that even though the customer service lady offered to read things, she sure didn't push it; I don't she wanted to do it anyway. Somebody said yesterday that he was planning to make some brf files of their products. That would be a definite plus. Re: Internet Recovery on MBP 13
Hi guys, A few weeks ago I ran the internet recovery option on my mac and it worked ok up to the point to where I had to sign into the Apple store to download the os. When this happened the installer froze up and I could not continue. A while back I know someone offered up instructions for getting around this problem but I have lost them. In my case I had a usb stick with the installer so I was able to get around this issue but if the recovery partition doesn't have the installer you will have a problem. The command for running the installer when you have your mac hooked directly to the network is command r while booting. What you do is wait about 2 or 3 minutes and then hit command f5 to start Voice Over. Tom > On Apr 25, 2014, at 9:37 AM, Daniel C wrote: > > I should've been more specific. Sometimes it's fine for a while but then again it sways up and down. At first I suspected my computer. But then I heard this loudness swaying on other Macs as well. But: I only heard it on Macs using german voices. So what about you guys? Do you have such issues with your english voices? Or what about others who use non german language? Re: display brailles
Hi again You can't assign commands unless you have the ability to write Braille on your display. That was why I was asking you if you could write Braille on your display. Otherwise, all you would have the ability to do is to read braille on your braille display. It sounds like that your display is supported by voice over because otherwise you would've had to do more to make it work or maybe it wouldn't have worked it all. So it sounds like that you will need to use your computer keyboard to do everything like putting things in and use your Braille display toread braille on your programs such as text edit. In fact, text edit is the first program that I would recommend you start with to practice with your braille display. You may need to press command shift w in text edit so that when you get to the bottom of the first page your text will start on the next page. Re: display brailles
I forgot something. Although you can't assign Braille key commands unless you have the ability to write Braille on your display, you may be able to assign commands to your trackpad. I haven't done this, so someone else on this list will have to help you to do that if you want to do that. Either that, or you may want to call that wonderful 877-204-3930 number. how to change back to Mini going to sleep
Hello all again: I want to change my Mini back to going to sleep when not in use to save batteries on my bluetooth keyboard. I went to systems prefs and saw settings for time, and put to sleep when possible. Am I in the right place? What are the steps to change back so I will have to put my password in each time the machine goes to sleep. I thought I did not want Mini sleeping, but I think it will save my batteries. Is this correct? Thanks for the help. By the way, proud of myself, backed up and synced my iPhone in iTunes last night. Even made an encrypted backup. We shall see if I ever need it if I have done it correctly, but I followed instruction, and everything seems just fine. Re: how to change back to Mini going to sleep
Hi. That is interesting as I adjusted my I Mac's sleeping schedule. You need to go to System preferences which you can do with VO M when in Finder to bring up the menus. Once you find Preferences after using VO down arrow, Vo space and right with VO once. Then interact with the table and type EN for energy savings and again press VO. Then you can VO right to explore your settings in Energy preferences. Hope that helps. Kawal. Re: Internet Recovery on MBP 13
Good Day: When the installer asks you to sign into the app store, you have to use the Window chooser to access the dialog. I seem to remember that I had to click the mouse in the edit field for the Apple ID using the VoiceOver commands VO-CMD-F5, followed by VO-Shift-Space, both while focused on this edit field. Once you sign in, the installation proceeds without further trouble from VO. It's been a while since I did this, so I may have mixed up a couple of details, but re-installing OS X from the recovery partition is definitely possible with VO. HTH: Henry Education never ends. Re: Internet Recovery on MBP 13
Command plus r only runs recovery, but command option plus r from what I understand runs the option for recovering without the recovery partition. And this, command plus option plus r is what I was looking at trying to run with VO. Sadly, though, as I took my Mac in to the apple Store Friday, they tell me that this is not possible with VO to run the, command plus option plus r with speech. Which is to bad, as if you wanted to recover back to the original shipping OS, those who can't see, or for those who rely on VO in particular, can't use that option. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: how to change back to Mini going to sleep
Having your Mac sleep shouldn't affect your keyboard. These keyboards are meant to sleep on their own when not in use, regardless of the Mac's state. Besides, the keyboard has to be ready to send a signal to the Mac when you hit a key to wake up the Mac. Internet Recovery Is Possible with VO on my MBP 13
I was able to get internet recovery to work with VO on my MBP 13, late 2011. It was guesswork though, because I couldn't tell what it was doing. So my guess is that you have to wait about an hour or so, then try command plus F5, and fred will come up talking. I made sure I was hard-wired into my router, connected the ethernet cable prior to booting, and held down CMD plus option plus r for a while, even after the chime, at least a good minute or so. I waited I'd estiamte about an hour, but this is a guess, and did CMD plus F5, VO eventually came on, but i had to press command plus F5 quite a bit during that time,t hough. So my guess is, if any blind person wants to do internet recovery, time with a sighted person, how long it takes for the globe to stop spinning on the screen, and that'll determine how long you have to wait before you press CMD plus F5, a I guess that when the globe is not spinning, that means the internet recovery is done loading. But, that was just an F.Y.I., for those people who are blind, and may have been wondering whether or not internet recovery was possible using VO. Yes, it is, but it's harder to guess at than the regular recovery partition, yet, it is, with patience, possible to do. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: How to Uninstall
In most cases, command-backspace will delete/uninstall an app once you find it in the apps folder. This is the usual process on a Mac. There's no need to go through an uninstall dialog as in Windows. Some programs leave files in your library, but they will either not apply or you may get dialogs for them. in this case, you may have to delete the files from your library, but this is rare. Re: How to Uninstall
Hi, Everything I've read so far, for the newer versions, just tells you to throw the app into the Trash to uninstall. This is done either for sighted users, by dragging it into the Trash or by any user by selecting the app then pressing cmd-delete which is the keyboard shortcut for placing something into the Trash. In most cases, this is all you ever need to do to uninstall an app on the Mac. There are cases where you need to delete certain Library and/or System files, but the vast majority of apps can be removed in the manner explained. I've not seen cmd-double-click in any situation but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. There is a control-click on an item, which just brings up the Contextual menu like VO-shift-m does where you could choose the "Move to Trash" item. Later... I've seen it take 10 to 15 seconds before that menu is populated with the various WiFi networks within range. That all being said, you should still connect to your own WiFi network pretty well right away, so, try going into System Preferences, in the Network pane, select WiFi from the Services table, then press VO-space on the Advanced menu. There should be a table there named "preferred Networks". Interact with it and make sure that your Home network is listed there. If it's not listed, then it's not being remembered properly. If there are other networks listed before it, then try moving yours to the top of the list. Moving it is done with the Drag & Drop process. If you have difficulties with the Drag & Drop, then simply remove the networks that are listed above it. You can accomplish this by selecting the network you wish to remove, then stopping Interaction with the table, and Interacting with the "WiFi Preferred Networks Control" area then choosing Remove. Re: Mailbox Sort Order in Mavericks
Hi Steve, Here's a trick to get the Mailboxes sorted properly: 1. Go into your Mail Preferences either with cmd-comma or under the Mail menu. 2. Select Accounts from the Toolbar. 3. Select the account you wish to have the Mailboxes re-ordered in. 4. From within the Accounts Info tab, uncheck the "Enable this Account" checkbox. Don't worry, this won't actually lose any of your info, it just temporarily disables it. 5. Close your Mail Prefs and Quit the Mail app. 6. Wait a short bit then re-open your Mail app. 7. Go back into Mail Prefs and enable this account. 8. Close your Mail Prefs and everything should be sorted properly again. Sometimes, if it is a Gmail account, you may need to Quit the Mail app and re-open it again so that the sync works properly. HTH. Later... Re: Drop Box Website.
Hi, Yes, the DB website is pretty awful, though everything seems doable on it. I use both Dropbox and BT Sync. With BT sync, you create the folder, and then either send somebody a key to it, or somebody sends you a key and you add it as a shared folder. There is much more control, though setting up the folders isn't quite as automatic. Everything in the folder you pick and everything in the folder they pick is synchronised, so best to use a Dropbox like structure. Re: Issues Ejecting Nano 5th gen
Hi, Usually, if iTunes has been quit, then you may see something iTunes/iPod related that could be causing the issue. If iTunes is still on, then things may be difficult to determine. The manual restore certainly does the trick, but it may have been easier to simply physically disconnect the iPod, restart your Mac and reconnect the iPod to see if things would start working again. Yes, changing the System voice does cause issues on the iPod as certain voices aren't compatible with the iPod. Re: VLC
According to this: https://wiki.videolan.org/Mac_OS_X/#Command_line you can use this command: /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC which seems to open with some kind of console. There's also an option to run without an interface using CVLC instead. I don't know anything more than this. I also don't know how to exit that console. There's more discussion on the above website. Re: voice changes after mavericks upgrade
Hi Shawn, So you are saying that Samantha and, presumably also Tom, since he is part of vocalizer expressive, are still suppose to be available under Mavericks? That is very interesting. I wonder if there is a way to delete the old files and somehow reacquire them, although I didn't think I saw Samantha or Tom in the list of voices in the customize dialogue under text to speech in the system preferences. Will look again. I've heard a lot of good things about these expressive voices. Thus far, I have tried Allison and Susan, and I prefer Samantha on my i-devices and, of course, Alex. I also prefer the Russian voice on my iPad to the ones available on the Mac. But I don't think Apple is going to care much what I prefer. Hi, thanks for all your answers and sharing your experiences. That's very valuable. Now I know the english speaking users don't experience this. I wished it was so simple. But unfortunately it's not connected to Ducking. I know the ducking function and I think it's a good idea of Apples. Re: voice changes after mavericks upgrade
Thanks, Shawn. I don't know why, perhaps because voice over is on? But when I went into finder as you described, and down to the individual voice folders, the system isn't letting me delete. I get the ding when I try to do that. Even opening a folder and then a subfolder within that folder, e.g. Samantha, and trying to get rid of an individual file, gives me the ding. There must be some setting I have to change somewhere to enable deletions? Wasn't there some change in mountain lion or lion that restricted user access to some folders that had been accessible under earlier versions of osX? I am not one who feels particularly comfortable messing in the guts of the system. But deleting various voices that I'm not using or can't use seems harmless enough if I could just get it to work. In Windows, sometimes one has to use an UNinstaller to cleanly remove a program or there will be problems. And that has happened to me. Command delete does remove the progrma from Applicatiions. Re: How to Uninstall
Hi, According to the RoboForm site, with the newest version, all you need to do is put the app into the Trash. Older versions required you to get rid of some files in /Users/Your_Account/Library/Application Support and /Users/Your_Account/Library/Preferences. Apps like this one may need you to make sure that you've quit Safari as well as restarted your computer prior to doing the re-install. This kind of app keeps some things running even though you've trashed things. I suggest you both restart the computer and Empty your Trash prior to attempting the re-install process. Later... Re: internet problems again on mac book pro
Hi, I wouldn't necessarily make that conclusion. It sounds to me like there's interference between Bluetooth and your WiFi signal. If your router is located in close proximity to your computer, then the two may be interfering with each other. In some router settings, there is the ability to either change the channel, turn on interference filters and/or a firmware update will fix it. Re: The Amazon App for IOS
I didn't even know they had braille catalogues, or had catalogues at all. I used to get braille ones all the time from schwans, which I loved for a while, but eventually had to stop them sense I stopped reading them and they came in this huge volume that took forever to page through, but thought it was amazing that they offered them. I think that's amazing that so many more companies are offering that. I've noticed that as well about amazon's customer service though, but never really had trouble with them until I got a hold of someone in the mp3 downloads department who had such a heavy accent that I couldn't understand her, and when I asked to be transferred to someone else, she hung up on me, which I called back and reported while continuing my ongoing issue of trying to get help with downloading the files, which was never resolved thanx to cloud player not being accessible, and mp3 downloder refusing to work. Question on Pages application
I am using Maverick on my MacBook with, I think, the most current version of Pages. In the past, I had no problem using VO-F to search for text in a document. It seems to work only on the current page, not the entire document. Nor can I find a way to easily move from page to page or to get the search command to work in the whole document. I also tried using command-F but, once again, couldn't figure out how to get to the text itself. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. BTW, it works just fine in the Text Edit application. Re: Installing apps
Hi, It all depends on the app you're installing. In the case of these kinds of apps that you drag or copy to the Applications folder, all that usually needs done is opening the app after the copy. So, once you've placed the app in your Applications folder, select it from within that folder and press cmd-o to open it. If anything needs installed elsewhere, the app will do it automatically for you. There are some situations where it may ask you for license info or some other things but in many cases, it just installs in the background. The app actually checks upon each startup whether it's the first time it's been opened and/or if certain things have been done, thus it won't need to run the installation part of things again. Make sure that you close the .dmg file and eject it so that you don't attempt to run the app from that disk image. Apps behave much better when they are running from the Applications folder. HTH. Hi, I'm guessing that their support person wasn't totally familiar with the Mac. In most cases, this is all you ever need to do to uninstall an app on the Mac. There are cases where you need to delete certain Library and/or System files, but the vast majority of apps can be removed in the manner explained. sharing success
Just need to share! I am the editor for Raven Newcastle self published on Amazon and Kindle. I had 2 files that were word .doc files which I needed to transfer to a memory stick so I could edit with my Apex. Sooo happy with myself! I sent the attachments to downloads, copied the files and pasted them into my books folder on the memory stick! I know this is a very small thing, but for a new Mac Mini user, it is huge. Thank you for letting me share. Learned a lot this weekend here, and this success just tops it off. reggie and Allegra -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Getting Started with AppleScript (was: Shortcut to Speak Word Count in Any application | Here's How It's Done)
Phil, if you have some experience with programming or some scripting language (e.g. I've done a bit with JavaScript) AppleScript will be really easy to pick up once you read through some other people's scripts and get an idea of the syntax, objects and commands. For more information on any particular object or command, I find the best thing is to Google Apple's AppleScript language guide. I've given you the link to their introduction, but it's often easiest to just Google what it is you're trying to do and include the terms AppleScript language guide. Then once you're on the page just do a VO-F search for the particular term you're after. Another great place to check out is Mac OSX Automation. They have a beginners tutorial on AppleScript, as well as more advanced tutorials on using AppleScript with iWork. For even more basic stuff, I also came across this tutorial but I didn't read through it very carefully as by that stage I had got a handle on the basics.
