:) Doing the manual restore, was my last resort.  I had already tried the 
disconnect/reconnect, ejecting it from my desktop, and restoring it via iTunes.

For some reason, none of those worked, and I could not get the iPod menus to 
speak.

Thankfully, for now it is working.  Though I'd like to get back to using the VO 
voice instead of the system voice.
