buying a macbook pro over the phone

2009-08-18 Thread a radix
Hello everyone, after some searching on internet I decided to buy my macbook
pro from apple instead of from another store because they dont seem much
cheaper and apple allows more configuration. I tried ordering via the website
but for some reason it did not work for me so I decided to call them which i
will do later today. Has anyone ordered over the phone, what are the paying
methods then?

I have to disagree with you on one point. The ability to add a song

Speaking iPod Nano no longer Speaks after firmwear upgrade!

2009-08-18 Thread Jenny Kennedy (Howard)

The subject pretty much says it all folks. My iPod nano 8GB no longer
speaks to me. In iTunes enable spoken menus is checked. There are a
lot of "other" files on te iPod that I'd assume to be speach files but
there is no talking. At all.

I even stuck it under the CCTV and looked at both Extras and Settings

iPhone: Utube Question

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Hofstader

Hi,

This may be an RTFM but I have read the iPhone manual and have just
reread the Utube section and couldn't find a suitable answer to my
question. My caffeine milligrams per hour ratio is dangerously low so
I may have entirely overlooked something.

When I open the Utube app from the home screen, I am presented with a
bunch of buttons. I like to choose the "Today" as I do this almost
every morning so I'm looking for new stuff.

Once I select a video to listen to and play it, I cannot figure out
how to get back to the Utube start up screen and the list of today's
new entries.

Please help.

Happy Hacking,
cdh

Re: partition

2009-08-18 Thread Kieren

Hi Will

If you really want to make backups of your install discs I would not
keep them on the same drive
as your regular system, if the drive fails it will most likely not be
able to boot from the partition
you saved the backups to anyway.

Personally I would just keep the discs in a safe place as you will
still have to use them to reinstall.
That said you can backup the install discs to a DMG.
You can use disc utility to do it.
1. insert the disc
2. choose the disc name (not the drive name) on the source list
3. choose new image
4. recommended options are Compressed and no encryption
5. choose where to save the image and give it a name
6. hit save.

this will take a while especially with the internal MBP drives
it could be slightly over 1 hour depending on your drive.

if you want to use this image to do an install you will need to
create
a partition of about 6.5 GB on your hd or thumbdrive of choice.
mount the image you made before
use Carbon Copy Cloner and do a complete backup of the image to the
partition/thumbdrive
then you can boot from the partition or thumbdrive and install should
progress a fair bit faster than off
the optical drive.
you may need a sighted person to help when holding down the option key
at boot
to select the correct drive to startup from.

I just did it, bought my first macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread a radix
Hello,
I just bought my first macbook pro and I got a discount because I am a student.
I choose the 15 inch with a matte display (i didnt want to do that at first but
I thought it might be easier for people who would have to read something on
it), i got the 7200 rpm hard drive and the 3.0ghz processor because I want to
use this laptop for at least 3 years. I did not opt to upgrade the internal
memory or the warranty at this time. I must say placing the order over the
phone was very easy. It will take a while to arrive because according to the
person on the phone the matte displays are a bit rare so it might take 1.5
week. I will be able to upgrade to the new operating system for 9 euro.
I am VERY excited I can tell you all and very much looking forward to receiving
my laptop. I did not opt to get any of the extra software packages with it
because I want to decide on htat after receiving it.

Re: I just did it, bought my first macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread Esther
Congratulations on the new MacBook Pro, Anouk. That sounds like a
very nice model. I still have the PowerBook that was my first Mac,
and which is now over 5 years old. Buying for long term future use
really does work -- this machine is still running, but I finally got a
new MacBook last fall to move onto the Intel platform and the larger
drives and faster processors for Leopard. I do recommend that you
pick up the AppleCare extended warranty later on, though. You might
check whether you're eligible for student discounts with any your
later software purchases, too.

Also, since you will be receiving your Mac before Snow Leopard is
released, you should know that you may be eligible for a reduced price
update to Snow Leopard. See the terms of the hardware uptodate program:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

In the U.S., buyers of qualifying new Macs (or refurbished Macs from
Apple's Online Store) purchased after June 8, 2009 can get the update
to Snow Leopard for $9.95 plus tax instead of $29.95. I'm not sure of
the details of this program applied abroad, but you may be able to
read/find the information appropriate to your country from the above
link.

Hope to see you on list with your questions when you laptop arrives.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Speaking iPod Nano no longer Speaks after firmwear upgrade!

2009-08-18 Thread Anne Robertson

Hello Jenny,

You're not alone! My husband had the same problem this morning, so
here are his instructions on how to rescue your iPod.

Cheers,

Anne

Rescuing a sick iPod

Connect up the iPod and open Disk Utility. Select the iPod in the
table on the left, then select the "First Aid" tab. Click on the
"Repair disk" button.

If Disk Utility fails to repair the iPod, it will have to be erased.
To do this, click on the Erase tab. It would be best then to click on
the "Security Options" button and choose "Zero out data", then click
OK, followed by "Erase".

Once it has been erased, you should be able to eject and disconnect it
from your Mac. When you connect the iPod again, it should launch
iTunes, which should offer to reinitialise it and let you start again
from scratch.

Re: I just did it, bought my first macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread Scott Chesworth

Hey Anouk, welcome abord buddy!

Just a quick message to second what Esther was saying about student
discounts. Here in the UK Apple care is amazingly cheap if you're a
student, it's probably a similar reduction where you are. No rush,
but sometime within your first year's warranty, if you get a reduced
price I'd definitely take out Apple care if you're in for the long
haul with this machine.

Esther, if that old Power Book of yours is antique enough to be able
to boot OS9 and you ever want to sell it, give me a shout off list.

Cheers
Scott

Re: Speaking iPod Nano no longer Speaks after firmwear upgrade!

2009-08-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

Spoken Menus is the third option in the Settings/General Settings
menu. Maybe it got set to off somehow. Also, maybe the language got
set to something else; this would make the iPod stop talking. If
that's the case, the last option in Settings is REset Settings; if you
select that, you're on the screen to choose a language. The first
language is U.S. English and the second one is U.K. English.

HTH,
Anna

Re: GMail in Apple Mail?

2009-08-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn
You did not indicate if this was POP or IMAP that was experienceing
the issue. For POP, I know that if the POP server gives any error
during login, then Apple mail will pop up the password message, even
if the error is "Sorry you are logged into the server somewhere
else". I suggest you ignore the error message, but then your mailbox
will go off line. Just wait about 1/2 hour and then bring it on line
and see if you get the message again. You might want to try the
connection doctor to see what is going on. I would suggest the
activity monitor in mail windows sub-menu, but I don't think I have
been able to track updates in that window very well.

Re: I just did it, bought my first macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Blouch
I usually recommend Applecare for laptops since they usually have a
harder life than desktops. We had to send my wife's in for repairs after
about a year. It kept locking up hard even after reinstalling the OS and
such. Apparently some issue with the "heat pipe" and some other
components they replaced. Anyway, they fedexed a box to our house that
was just right to snuggle the laptop and then picked it up. We had it
back and working 24 hours later. Very nice.

Re: Autofill with the Mac

2009-08-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

HI Marie,

Interesting. I chose to erase and sync when I connected my iPod, which
I had synced with another computer first. I then stopped it from
syncing and made sure Sync Music was unchecked. This should make the
iPod as close as possible to starting out fresh. I selected a track,
pressed VO-Shift-M, and chose Add to Playlist, from the context menu.
However, there was no playlist named for or connected with the iPod in
the submenu listing all the playlists. I know you can create a
playlist, choose to sync the iPod with that playlist, and then add
content to it; that's a fine way to get music onto the iPod. The only
problem with that approach is that unlike when you manage music
manually, you have to sync your iPod with only one computer. you can't
for example, put music on the iPod from one computer and then add more
from another. If I'm missing something, let me know.

Thanks,
Anna

Re: iPhone: Utube Question

I can't check this at the moment, but virtually every application puts
a back button in the upper left corner of the screen, usually labeled
with the name of the previous screen. If I am remembering correctly,
the YouTube app should do this as well.

Re: Autofill with the Mac

2009-08-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn

I wonder if nothing else, perhaps a applescript can be written?
Something like

1. Select songs you want to have on iPod.
2. Run the appleScript to add to iPod.

I would expect this would only be about 4 lines of AppleScript

I currently don't have a iPod to play with, but if you want me to look
into some such tool let me know.

Yup. When the video first plays the UI all goes away but if I double tap
it comes back. The video switches to landscape mode whether I like it or
not but at the top left is a done button which brings me back to info
about the video and puts focus on the button to go back to the list of
today's videos.

Congratulations on the new MacBook Pro, Anouk. That sounds like a very nice
model. I still have the PowerBook that was my first Mac, and which is now over
5 years old. Buying for long term future use really does work -- this machine
is still running, but I finally got a new MacBook last fall to move onto the
Intel platform and the larger drives and faster processors for Leopard. I do
recommend that you pick up the AppleCare extended warranty later on, though.
You might check whether you're eligible for student discounts with any your
later software purchases, too.

Also, since you will be receiving your Mac before Snow Leopard is released,
you should know that you may be eligible for a reduced price update to Snow
Leopard. See the terms of the hardware uptodate program:

  http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

In the U.S., buyers of qualifying new Macs (or refurbished Macs from Apple's
Online Store) purchased after June 8, 2009 can get the update to Snow Leopard
for $9.95 plus tax instead of $29.95. I'm not sure of the details of this
program applied abroad, but you may be able to read/find the information
appropriate to your country from the above link.

Hope to see you on list with your questions when you laptop arrives.

  Cheers,

  Esther

Re: partition

2009-08-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn

I remember reading that SuperDuper (probably only the paid version)
can set up a "sandbox". In this configuration you have a stable copy
of the Macintosh applications and OS on a read-only partition, and
then SuperDuper will create aliases to those files on a second
partition. This way if you break something (install a bad driver,
test different settings...) then you can get back to your standard
configuration with little fuss (just boot from the rreadOnly
partition, and re-create the workspace partition.)

On another backup note, the tidbits article I mentioned earlier was
about Crash Plan which allows automatic offsite backups. It mentioned
general reasons to have multiple backups and the gave an overview of
the technology and cost of several plans. Due to copyright reasons, I
will not copy the article here, but the URL should be:
http://db.tidbits.com/article/10473

Buddy can refer to any gender yeah, if you're speaking English as
badly as most of us Londoner's do lol. I'm sure your student discount
will still work if you add Apple Care later into the warranty, I
didn't purchase mine until 9 months in and it was all good. You're
covered for a year though already, and those new macbooks have awesome
build quality, so it's not something you need to worry about for a
while yet.

Re: configuring my macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Blouch

Generally that's true. As a percentage the speed difference between a
2.53 Ghz and a 2.6 is only 3% and 2.53 to 2.8 is only 10%. But if you
run out of memory the Mac will start swapping chunks of least used
memory space to disk to free up more. That swap process can turn your
machine to sludge. So reaching full capacity on RAM usage or getting
near it (starting to trigger page swaps) will make a much greater impact
on performance than the overall processor speed.

what to do to prepare for my macbook pro?

Hello, I know I shall read the voiceover manual and check screenless switchers
because I think they have recorded their experiences while switching from

switched from windows to mac os x that I can read?
Anything else in particular I should read or listen to while I wait for my mac

Re: Autofill with the Mac

2009-08-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi All,

I looked at itunes help, and discovered that I had made a huge
mistake. In actuality, both Autofill and copy and paste are working
fine, both in Windows and on the Mac.

The mistake I made was thinking that unchecking Sync music on the
Music tab of the iPod was the same thing as checking Manually Manage
Music on the Summary tab. It turns out these are not equivalent at
all. Checking Manually Manage Music is necessary to turn on copy and
paste and autofill.

I am now wiping the egg off my face. sorry for causing all this bother.

All the best,
Anna

Hi Anouk,

Mike Arrigo has done nine excellent podcasts introducing various
features of the Mac. I got my Mac in June, and they have really helped
me get going. They're all available on the Blind Cool Tech website at
www.blindcooltech.com

Good luck,

Hello, I know I shall read the voiceover manual and check screenless
switchers because I think they have recorded their experiences while switching
from windows to mac os x. Are there any other podcasts or documents from people
who switched from windows to mac os x that I can read?
Anything else in particular I should read or listen to while I wait for my
mac to arrive?
Thanks for all the help everyone,
  Greetings, Anouk,

I usually recommend Applecare for laptops since they usually have a harder
life than desktops. We had to send my wife's in for repairs after about a year.
It kept locking up hard even after reinstalling the OS and such. Apparently
some issue with the "heat pipe" and some other components they replaced.
Anyway, they fedexed a box to our house that was just right to snuggle the
laptop and then picked it up. We had it back and working 24 hours later. Very
nice.

2009-08-18 Thread Jim Stevenson

What was the original subject of this post?

Do you know of any way to filter email by subject when the usual subject line
contains only a digest number?

This is why it helps those of us who need to sort email at work,
to use the original subject line,
as long as it remains relevant,
instead of the digest number, which tells little.
Using digest as a subject kills my ability to sort and read by subject!

Sony e-readers go standard but not daisy?

2009-08-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I just read a New York Times article about Sony using a standard
called ePub,is this at all related to DAISY? There was also some
speculation that if Apple brings out a tablet, that it will have book
reading abilities. Perhaps we should request that Apple support the
Daisy standard in any technology?

I am concerned that the DAISY standard will flounder if mainstream
devices never support it. Unless this eePub, has functions that daisy
does not, we might see the continuance of a blind ghetto for book
publishing. Does anybody know if this issue has been discussed on a
more general computing for the blind list, as this really has nothing
to do with the Mac?

There is an app called photo booth which lets you take pictures with the

any way to announce if something is in the picture. I guess there is no

Re: Mac & Isight video camera ?

2009-08-18 Thread Esther

Hi Chris and Mike,

There's no need to use photo booth if you just want to take a quick
snapshot capture of yourself. Just start up iChat, then go to the
Video menu on the iChat menu bar (VO-M, then press "V" and arrow down
into the menu). Select the "Video Preview" option to turn on the
iSight camera. If you're typing on your MacBook, you'll be ideally
centered for your picture, and using Command-Option-S will take a
snapshot called "Video Snapshot" that is a jpeg file on your Desktop.

If you want more control of the process, then as Chris mentioned,
there are sofware applications.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Mac & Isight video camera ?

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Blouch
I guess I failed to mention that Photo Booth comes with OSX so it should
already be in your applications folder. So apple-shift-a to open
applications, type pho which should take you to photo booth, apple-o to
open then apple-T to take a picture. Easy peasy. It also does a 3 2 1
countdown with audio cues and will flash the screen white to try and
illuminate your face better.

Re: Mac & Isight video camera ?

2009-08-18 Thread Esther

Thanks for that, Chris. Just goes to show that I haven't spent my
time exploring photo software on the Mac. I've mostly used the
facility to take screen capture snapshots (such as Command-Shift-3 for
the full-screen shots) which can be helpful to send in for
troubleshooting messages, and since I looked into using iChat
sessions, I knew these features were there for the video iChat
sessions. Also, I confess that all of this knowledge comes from the
pre-Leopard days.

A response from Accessibility at apple. Re: firm wear upgrade killing speech. Umm? Okay weird.

2009-08-18 Thread Jenny Kennedy (Howard)

Hi guys,
Thanks everyone for the fix ideas for my sick iPod. Haven't got to
try them yet, but at least I have some clue as to what to do.

I contacted the accessibility department at Apple thinking this was
the right place to go.

After all, the new iPod software upgrade killed speech thus taking
away access.

I got a response back from a robot telling me to contact Apple tech
support and telling me to take my iPod to an apple store or I could
call a number if my iPod was less than 90 days old. It's much older.
total uselessness in the form of an Email. Don't people read the
things sent to the access department or are things done with robots?
Did I err in sending a queiry? Is this more a tech support matter?

Their stupid upgrade stopped my talking iPod talking I thought this
was an accessibility issue. Help? Don't really want anyone else to
have the same problem as me.

Am I jus t having bad luck? LOL
Sorry. just a bit perplexed and frustrated...
Thanks for reading.

Speaking of Ichat would anyone like to give it a test run? I've just
got myself an Ichat account at dane.tretho...@me.com so add this to

RE: configuring my macbook pro

Chris,

I thought allocating 3GB to the Mac and 1GB to Windows would work fine
regardless of the processor speed? Is that an accurate assessment?

Like I said, 3GB is working fine for me. It only gets a little tight when
running VMWare and giving a lot of RAM to Windows.

Help, I can't uninstall Infovox

2009-08-18 Thread erik burggraaf

Hi guys, I'm trying to uninstall infovox/ivox. My 30 day trial is
nearly up, and I've decided I don't like it much. The voices sound
great, and I like ryan on my phone, but the pronounciations on the mac
are terrible.

So, I pressed the uninstall button and right away it froze and after a
few minutes I just forced it to quit. Then I tried running the
uninstall aplication from the disc image I downloaded and it did
exactly the same thing. Then I tried several reboots with the same
result.

I didn't want to just wack all the stuff from the applications folder
because the voices are probably registered somewhere to allow other
mac applications to use them. I don't want to accidentally hit on one
when it's not there and wind up losing speech or crashing something.

Any help appreciated.

Best,

Re: Question on FTP server's for the mac.

2009-08-18 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

I know of a friend who does this, I think he uses something called
Wumpus? Excuse my spelling. I think there's also another FTP server
application called Captain Ftp.

Further to this, OS10 Leopard has a small FTP Server built-in, that is
to say you can access your Mac with a FTP client and transfer files
from there to say other machines on your network, - not recommended
for Internet use for obvious security reasons -. You can turn this on
under Sharing in System Preferences.

Finally, I'm sure I read an article somewhere which gave specific
instructions on turning your Mac into a fully fledged FTP server using
a whole string of commands in Terminal but I didn't persist with this.

Screen window grab

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Blouch
One thing I would like to figure out is how to do the screen region grab
Apple-shift-4. It has two modes. The first is where you would drag a box
with a mouse and it would do a screen grab on just what's inside the
box. The second more useful mode is to hit space once which toggles to
window grab mode which automatically selects everything in the window
which has focus. So I do an apple-shift-4, then space to go into window
grab mode and then apple-tab to, say, my Safari window. But to do the
actual grab I have to mouse click and VO-shift-space does nothing. This
would be really nice to attach a picture of just the window of interest
rather than my entire cluttered desktop.

I haven't been following your discussion, but are you sure its not
something simple like speech getting disabled automaticly after the
firmware upgrade?
As a side note, would someone be so kind as to give me a summery of
the new features for blind people in the new firmware?

Re: configuring my macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread Scott Howell

I've got a 2.8Ghz 15-inch MBP with 4Gb ram and it runs as efficiently
as ever and in fact performs a bit better than my wife's 20-inch iMac
with 2Gb ram. The performance vs cost will not be realized if going
from 4 to 8Gb of ram unless you are doing something that just demands
so much resources from the machine.

You'll do fine on 4Gb of ram and at the price of the upgrade, oh no,
that is a bit to painful. Now I'd spend the money on a solid-state
drive, that would be nice.

Re: I just did it, bought my first macbook pro

2009-08-18 Thread Scott Howell

Anouk,

You will have a year to do this and this means don't wait until the
very last second. :) I did and actually Apple did call me to
encourage me to spend some money on purchasing the Apple Care for my
wife's IMac. I'm going to get it for my MBP soon, but yeah, I spend a
lot and so the warranty will have to wait a minute. :)
Btw, I don't generally refer to female friends as buddies, but hell I
guess you could be a buddy too. :) I mean my co-worker is my bud, but
I typically choose a different word. :)

to do that at first but I thought it might be easier for people who
would have to read something on it), i got the 7200 rpm hard drive
and the 3.0ghz processor because I want to use this laptop for at
least 3 years. I did not opt to upgrade the internal memory or the
warranty at this time. I must say placing the order over the phone
was very easy. It will take a while to arrive because according to
the person on the phone the matte displays are a bit rare so it
might take 1.5 week. I will be able to upgrade to the new operating
 system for 9 euro.
I am VERY excited I can tell you all and very much looking forward
to receiving my laptop. I did not opt to get any of the extra
software packages with it because I want to decide on htat after
 receiving it.

EPub is closely related to Text only DAISY. But I would agree that
DAISY support from Apple is best as well.

Re: Help, I can't uninstall Infovox

2009-08-18 Thread Brett Campbell

If you still have the install package you downloaded for the demo, I
believe there is an uninstall app in the folder. If this is not the
case, when I demoed the voices, a couple days before the trial ended,
a message from infovox automatically popped up asking if i want to
purchase or uninstall. There was an uninstall button, I hit it and
the program uninstalled itself. There is also uninstall instructions
on their web site.

Accessibility of Ableton

2009-08-18 Thread Romack

Hey list,
Does anyone know of the accessiblity of Ableton Live (any version) on
the Mac with Voiceover? I'd be anxious to know. Haven't really heard
of any multitrack recording options that *ARE* accessible with
Voiceover, so feeling slightly discouraged of going the Apple route
with my next machine.

Any insight welcome,

Re: A response from Accessibility at apple. Re: firm wear upgrade killing speech. Umm? Okay weird.

2009-08-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

I updated my Nano recently and did not lose speech, so I don't think
the update necessarily causes this. I don't see any difference between
the previous and current firmware; it's supposed to be mostly bug
fixes, I think.

I'm really impressed with the accessibility folks so far. I've sent
several e-mails, and they have all been answered personally and
thoughtfully. Sorry this experience wasn't as good.

Best,
Anna

Re: Listening to Podcasts in iTunes

2009-08-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

HI Dane,

I don't know of any way to tell itunes a particular file is a podcast,
but you can either declare it an audiobook or check the options to
have it save your place and be skipped when you shuffle. You get to
all these options by focusing on the file, pressing Command-I, and
going to the Options tab. There's a media kind menu where you can set
it as an audiobook; the other options are check boxes.

HTH,
Anna

Automator

2009-08-18 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

All this talk of the Automator over the last 24 or so hours has got me
thinking, does Amadeus Pro have facilities to be used in the Automator
or in Apple Scripting? Hmmm, I took a look and it doesn't look as
though it does and that's a crying shame, Dave's conversion problems
could have been solved in a second and this would enhance the Batch
Converter so I'm going to suggest to the author that he look at this -
if he isn't doing so already -.
