I've got a 2.8Ghz 15-inch MBP with 4Gb ram and it runs as efficiently as ever and in fact performs a bit better than my wife's 20-inch iMac with 2Gb ram. The performance vs cost will not be realized if going from 4 to 8Gb of ram unless you are doing something that just demands so much resources from the machine.
