I remember reading that SuperDuper (probably only the paid version)  
can set up a "sandbox".  In this configuration you have a stable copy  
of the Macintosh applications and OS on a read-only partition, and  
then SuperDuper will create aliases to those files on a second  
partition. This way if you break something  (install a bad driver,  
test different settings...) then you can get back to your standard  
configuration with little fuss (just boot from the rreadOnly  
partition, and re-create the workspace partition.)

On another backup note, the tidbits article I mentioned earlier was  
about Crash Plan which allows automatic offsite backups. It mentioned  
general reasons to have multiple backups and the gave an overview of  
the technology and cost of several plans. Due to copyright reasons, I
