[AFMUG] Powering an Aviat 4100

2020-06-25 Thread Rhys Cuff (Speedweb Internet) via AF
Hi Guys

If I have a negative ground 24 solar site filled with radio equipment, is the
best way to power the Aviat by dc cable through an isolated DCDC converter?
Any other Gotcha’s?

I would like to just plug into the netonix switch with everything else but I
think the pins are different.

Thanks for any help

Rhys

Yeah - you will need -/+48VDC for the Aviat radio. They are floating, so
they don't care about -/+. I would stick a Meanwell RSD in line to convert
your -24VDC to 48VDC and be done with it.

Thanks Josh

I do have an RSD handy but it doesn't say isolated and some others do.
Is a Dcdc converter isolated by nature?

The specs say they will take 24v also in the dc port, would I still need the
dcdc?
The sales guy told me they are positive ground.

Thanks again

Re: [AFMUG] Powering an Aviat 4100

2020-06-25 Thread Josh Baird
The RSD is isolated. Not sure if all DCDC converters are, but I know the
RSD is.

You are right - the WTM4100 is different after looking at the spec sheet:

Input voltage: -20 to -57V (WTM4100/ 4200 13-42 GHz)
Input voltage: -40 to -57V (WTM4200 5-11 GHz)

I only have experience with the WTM4200 (11Ghz) and WTM4800 which are -/+
48VDC. You may want to check with Ken Ruppel on the positive ground.

Meanwell RSD will work.  You can verify with your multimeter that it has
no connection between DC and ground, but I guarantee it doesn't.

[AFMUG] EPMP 4.4.3 and physically close SMs

2020-06-25 Thread Nate Burke
Because of Internal politics, I have a customer that needed 2 separate
radio feeds. So I have 2 EPMP force 200 radios on the same pole, about
1' apart.

After upgrading to 4.4.3 these 2 radios give really strange signal
readings. They appear to be working normally, with no complaints from
the customer. They should be around -70db, but watching the webpage
(Also SNMP reports the same) they will bounce between -70db and -20db
every couple seconds. The EAlign page does not reflect this, it just
stays steady at -70.

Of all the hundreds of EPMP Sm's that I've upgraded to 4.4.3, these 2
are the only ones that have this problem. Is there some sort of self
interference going on because the SM's are so close? They are both
attached to the same AP, no other radio on the AP has this issue. I
don't think I have another location where 2 SM radios are this close
physically. The signal was reporting normally until upgrading to 4.4.3

Anyone else seen this?

Re: [AFMUG] EPMP 4.4.3 and physically close SMs

2020-06-25 Thread Josh Luthman
I think mine started with 4.4.3. Could be wrong.

I get -65 normally but SNMP will show -89 here and there. eAlign shows -65
give or take a db.

On close SM's or just an SM in general?

After upgrading to 4.4.3 these 2 radios give really strange signal
readings. They appear to be working normally, with no complaints

Of all the hundreds of EPMP Sm's that I've upgraded to 4.4.3, these 2
are the only ones that have this problem. Is there some sort of self
interference going on because the SM's are so close? They are both
attached to the same AP, no other radio on the AP has this issue. I
don't think I have another location where 2 SM radios are this close
physically. The signal was reporting normally until upgrading to
4.4.3

Anyone else seen this?

[AFMUG] Syncinjector cambium sync with 3ghz 450m

2020-06-25 Thread Steve Jones
Im confused as shit, and the cambium documentation is not clear. The
syncinjector cambium sync says 450m, but is the only 450m 5ghz? the 3ghz as
bestI can tell is a DC only product (even says something about sync over
power)

so will the syncinjector still provide sync at the ethernet port, i just
turn off the power output on the syncinjector? or am i misunderstanding
this and the 450m 3ghz will take power via the ethernet port?

forrest?

Couldn't see the head as it was already moving away through the brush. Pretty

Re: [AFMUG] Syncinjector cambium sync with 3ghz 450m

2020-06-25 Thread Eric Muehleisen
The RackInjector board naming scheme is confusing. He really needs a table
matrix that breaks down what boards support what equipment and what jumpers
and power requirements to use. I think this is why he was asking for help
on his documentation.

Power Injection for Cambium Sync = 450M & 450i.
Power Injection + Canopy Sync = ePMP, 450 & 320

To power a 3ghz 450M you'll need a PDU card and a Power Injection for
Cambium Sync to provide sync pulse. No PoE on the 3.65ghz 450M. You leave
power enabled on the card/ports or sync will not work.

so will the syncinjector still provide sync at the ethernet port, i

[AFMUG] OT: Frickin Noobs

2020-06-25 Thread Adam Moffett
So some radio station is transporting audio over IP from studio to
tower.  A few weeks ago they started getting skips in the audio, and
they're finger pointing at me.  At first I couldn't even see a problem.
Eventually I find that every so often there's a 1/10th second event with
packet loss.  Seven seconds after the event you hear a little blip on
the radio.  You could go a few hours between events, or only a few minutes.

I said yeah I'll try to track down what's causing that, but if you have
a 7 second delay on this one-way transmission, isn't there plenty of
time to resend 1/10th second of missing audio?

*grumble grumble*, finger point, it worked before, etc

So I've been trying to narrow down where this is happening and swap
interfaces and such.  And keep in mind anything I do interrupts the
radio so I have to do it at odd hours. Periodically during the process I
re-ask why does this even happen?  This amount of loss shouldn't hurt you.

*grumble grumble*, finger point, it worked before, etc

So today they let me take a look at their Comrex audio streaming
thing-a-ma-bobbers, and I looked in the manual.  Turns out the error
correction features don't work on lossless audio codecs unless your
firmware version is above a certain revision.  Theirs isn't above that
revision, and they're using a lossless audio codec.  So now I'm like,
yeah I'll keep looking for that little blip, but in the meantime you
don't have to hear it if you'll upgrade your firmware and enable FEC.

They've had a number of people looking at this, including their
engineer.  Their equipment has robust enough error correction that they
could run that stuff on satellite or 4G if they wanted to. It's just not
configured right!

You'd have fixed this in half an hour if you'd have RTFM'd you frickin
noobs.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Frickin Noobs

2020-06-25 Thread Steve Jones
I had to correct problems for a radio station we service. What a PITA
dealing with them is. I accept the guy knows more about AM/FM radio than
ill ever even think about, but come on, learn the tech youre managing. Fist
issue was they were broadcasting real time stream with absolutely no
buffer. They also were not running any firewall. so after a few times of
them getting hacked and being an open SIP server, they decided to get a
more secure device (still no firewall) and finally got one with a buffer
and correction. I think I got him to buffer up 3 seconds, which pretty much
resolved all that.

Its like come on, be realistic, dont run things with no margins. This would
literally have askip when someone walked into the tower shed and turned on
the fluorescent light

Every year in the county west of me they have a rattlesnake roundup event
in Weatherford, TX. They didn't do it this year due to covid and people are
reporting tons of rattlesnakes now out in the fields.

65G for sure. It is like a mini SSV
You can probably put twice the stuff on it than you can a 45G.

[AFMUG] OT Witch

2020-06-25 Thread chuck
Had to go read why again they switched.
Health problems which lead to drug problems.

In 1969, with Dick York as Darrin (his final season), the show was a ratings
hit at #11, but when Sargent took over the role, ratings soon dropped and the
show went to #24. Poor Dick Sargent never did catch on with the show's loyal
viewers and Bewitched was soon cancelled.

Dick York remained on his back for a full year after leaving Bewitched and fell
on hard times soon after. Bad investments had left him broke, and his teeth
rotted out (a common problem for drug abusers), so he and his wife were reduced
to cleaning houses for a living.

In a tragic twist of fate, the actor found out later in life that offers had
actually been coming in for him, but because his listing with the union was
somehow messed up, he was never notified. In 1982, Dick York finally got his
life back together, got his teeth fixed, and went back to work. He did guest
spots on Fantasy Island, Simon & Simon, and a TV movie called High School, USA.

York's comeback was short-lived, however, and he devoted the rest of his life
to fighting his life-threatening illnesses and helping the homeless. Dick York,
a TV icon, died in 1992 at the age of 63.

On the 3GHz 450M you have to use at least 2 cables. One will probably be cat5
for sync and data. Power must have it's own 4 conductor cable. In the
RackInjector, you would be providing power over the sync port as well as the
power cable but the 450M will ignore the power input from the Cat5. The pic
below shows the end result. This is live from one of our towers. Note the
current on all the ports is minimal.

Power Injection for Cambium Sync = 450M & 450i.
Power Injection + Canopy Sync = ePMP, 450 & 320

To power a 3ghz 450M you'll need a PDU card and a Power Injection for Cambium
Sync to provide sync pulse. No PoE on the 3.65ghz 450M. You leave power enabled
on the card/ports or sync will not work.

Everyone straightened you out just fine

But yes, the 3Ghz medusa powers via the DC power, and gets sync over the
ethernet port with a cambium sync rackinjector card OR a
powerinjector+cambium sync if you're at a site without a rackinjector. And
yes, it's fine to put power on the ethernet port on a 3Ghz 450m.

T1 over IP is a damnable sin.  I can see why you might do it on a campus
network to connect phone systems in different buildings. But for what
you spend on T1 over IP equipment, I'd wonder why the person wasn't just
considering a different phone system.

Honestly I'm very impressed by the radio stations's Comrex BRIC-Link.  I
just wish they knew how to use it.

And their response to me telling them it will work better if you update
the firmware and enable FEC is still: *grumble grumble*, finger point,
it worked before, etc

correction features don't work on lossless audio codecs unless your
firmware version is above a certain revision.  Theirs isn't above
that
revision, and they're using a lossless audio codec. So now I'm like,
yeah I'll keep looking for that little blip, but in the meantime you
don't have to hear it if you'll upgrade your firmware and enable FEC.

They've had a number of people looking at this, including their
engineer.  Their equipment has robust enough error correction
that they
could run that stuff on satellite or 4G if they wanted to. It's
just not
configured right!

You'd have fixed this in half an hour if you'd have RTFM'd you
frickin
noobs.

Re: [AFMUG] [ External ] Re: Syncinjector cambium sync with 3ghz 450m

2020-06-25 Thread Jon Langeler
Fiber and power cables only plus gps feeding off the aux port works fine.
