I purchased a damaged Glasair II TD, tail dragger. I converted it to an FT,
Fixed Tricycle, overhauled the engine (with help/advice), replaced the prop
with a like model and completed other repairs. I requested and received a
replacement A/W certificate from the FSDO with new/updated limitations which
defined a local flight test area centered at KHAO, my home airport, as the
previous one had been in Connecticut. I logged all my work. My A&P friend
completed a condition inspection (with my help). I placed the plane in Phase I
flight test for 5 hours because the landing gear was a major change - required
by limitation (19) in my Limitations Letter. (See portion below.) I flew the
flight test time with my instructor friend because I didn’t have a Medical at
the time. I think everything worked as advertised. Just like the new Basic
Med, if you read the requirements, then it’s not too hard.

(19) After incorporating a major change as described in § 21.93, the aircraft
owner is required to reestablish compliance with § 91.319(b) and notify the
geographically responsible FSDO of the location of the proposed test area. The
aircraft owner must obtain concurrence from the FSDO as to the suitability of
the proposed test area. If the major change includes installing a different
type of engine (reciprocating to turbine) or a change of a fixed-pitch from or
to a controllable propeller, the aircraft owner must fill out a revised Form
8130-6 (Application for Airworthiness Certificate) to update the aircraft’s
file in the FAA Aircraft Registration Branch……………………………...
