Open Voiceover utility with VO-f8, arrow down until you hear web in the categories, tab, change the radio button from dom to group. Items on a web page are grouped together in several groups. You don't have to move through each item at a time. If you don't like it, you can change it back.

Hello again, If the preview pain is on, the message is marked as read when you move focus over it. You can turn cursor tracking off and just move the vo cursor over the message, then you will hear the status as unread. There is also a way to turn off the preview pain, but I don't remember
