Hi, I've been monitoring this thread and I wanted to give my observation on Mail.
I am finding that on occasion it behaves just as you are describing. However, most of the time on my machine it seems to be reading correctly. I seem to be encountering the problem most often at the beginning of a thread. That might be something to consider.
