True, but there is a high probability that if you have VO running you
probably are visually impaired. Likewise my previous test of MSAA being
in use on a machine also does not guarantee the user was running a
screen reader or even had a disability, but it didn't pass the sniff
test. I have know
Hi,
I get your point but, how does using voiceover identify your disability? I
mean, you could have a print impaired or be blind after all. Thats like saying

Well, I'm not sure it would pass the 'yuck' test for many people if they
found out Apple was identifying their disability by probing their device
and not asking permission. Personally identifiable or not. In the states

I think if it came out that Apple was probing your system to figure out
if you are using assistive technology (which probably means you have a
disability) and did this without asking you first, the press and various

Hi Marc.
People have said that you have to forget everything about other screen readers
when learning VoiceOver. I agree with that, and I don't. Interacting is a
different concept but once you understand that interacting is a way of
restricting where the screen reader's cursor goes, then it ma

As far as networking goes, it's all TCP/IP on the internet so there
really is no such thing as a 'mac' network or a 'windows' network.
Granted Windows does some proprietary things for discovery but
I suspect doing this in today's heightened awareness of consumer
tracking and privacy, probing people's machines to discover if they were
using voiceover would be full of legal landmines. Many do not want to

As long as you're willing to jump right in, and not make many screen-reader

it. I got my Mac Mini about two years ago, and I was l

I'm sure you are correct that they do track this, but again it would be nice to
know how and how that data is being aggregated. In other words, do they look
only at the instances of VO being used or how often etc. All good data points.

Wow, wouldn't it be fairly easy for apple to track voiceover users when you
first do the setup. I would think it would be fairly easy for them to detect
that voiceover was running. if not, I can only imagine it would be easy for
them to simply ask that as part of the setup. I do realize that

Ah, well that makes sense and one expects some sort of learning curve when

new features are added.

You know that is a good point and perhaps what would be interesting is when
such data is shared and if that is included. I had forgotten about the
diagnostic data which I also turned on for all devices.

I do not know for sure, but, since Apple send anonymous user data back to
themselves from the OSx, assuming you've not said no to this, they probably
have the diagnostics and reporting side of things let them know if your Mac or

Hi,
not a bad idea. I would make 1 small correction. Instead of the person
stating their disability, or, the fact that they are even disabled, I would
just ask if they use any accessibility features, and have them check off which
ones. they use. Voiceover, zoom, etc.

I really can't argue with that. selecting text on the web is quite a chore on
