I can't speak for the C&C 44, but the rudder bearings on my 37+ were
Delrin. I used a jig saw and split the bearings at approximately 90
degrees apart. A couple of taps and the bearings came right out.

Lower ring is just an acetyl bushing/spacer. After cleaning and roughing
up the chipped out area I would use your favorite faring putty/thickened
epoxy to fill.

dropped down. Being new to me I dont know what it is supposed to look like.
Is the lower ring supposed to be exposed? Or should it be up in the tube?

had long ago was to buy a plastic 'for sale' sign at a big box store.

I'd be tempted to dismantle the steering and drop the rudder. You will then be
able to see what the construction is and what needs doing. If you need new
Delrin inserts or some other work, it should be relatively easy to get them
turned at any competent machine shop. It will also give you an opp
