[Bug 466321] Re: After Ubuntu installation, nothing in universe is installable until package list is updated

2010-03-27 Thread WeatherGod
John, are you testing Lucid or Karmic? I haven't had much issues with
package lists for the Lucid beta, and most of the stability bugs for the
software center seems to be ironed out. We would greatly appreciate
your opinion on the state of the Software Center in Lucid.

[Bug 435805] Re: Icons overlap for categories with >= 9 rows

2010-02-10 Thread WeatherGod
I am very doubtful that this is a graphics driver issue. This seems to
be more related to changes to the UNR code to calculate icon spacing and
window sizes. That is why this issue is difficult to find because it
requires very specific set of circumstances to reproduce. Simply
changing the number of icons in the menu can sometimes fix this.

So far, on my EeePC 1000, I have yet to encounter this issue, although I
did notice some minor spacing mistakes for early versions of Karmic. I
have had no issues with the alpha versions of Lucid.

[Bug 464308] Re: Firefox video choppy

2009-11-01 Thread WeatherGod
Curious. I am almost willing to chaulk this one up to server/internet
bandwidth issues, given that the problem is intermittent and such.
However, I would then expect that the player should be properly
buffering the content before playing.

Maybe this is strictly a flash problem...

How about this? Go to wikimedia and try viewing some of the videos on
that site. Those videos are viewed through the new HTML5 embedded video
specs and are handled natively by firefox, not by a separate plugin. If
those videos are fine, then I vote that this is partly a flash problem.

[Bug 478962] Re: After upgrade to Karmic, CD/DVD drive no longer works

2010-01-07 Thread WeatherGod
Doris,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You are correct that since
you didn't uninstall Rhythmbox, that command that I gave you wasn't
going to do anything.

For your own information, I have looked up what the DLNA/UPnp plugin is.
It seems to be something that would allow a person to play their music
files on other devices like the XBox 360 gaming console. I seriously
doubt that is something you would need.

As for the next step, I would like to redo the instructions I gave in
comment 12 in this bug report. Once you have done the apport-collect
command, and I can verify that you are running a fully updated Ubuntu, I
can then flag down a specialist to take a look at your information.

At the login screen, you will see an option at the bottom to choose

but you should be able to choose "Gnome-failsafe". Try that to see if
you are able to log in so that you can run the command.

[Bug 478962] Re: After upgrade to Karmic, CD/DVD drive no longer works

2010-01-08 Thread WeatherGod
Doris,

I feel really silly. I did some asking around about your issue. There
are still some unanswered questions about "why", but I believe I have
found a way to get rhythmbox to play your CD. It seems to be that CDs
are no longer automatically recognized by rhythmbox. You have to
actually take a few steps to make it appear.

After inserting the CD into your drive, start up Rhythmbox. Then
*right-click* on "Music" in the left pane, then click ok "Import
File...". This will open a file selection box (kinda like when you
browse to open a document in Open Office or such). In that file
selection box, click on "Audio Disc" (or whatever has a CD icon). Then
the cd will be listed under "Devices" in the left panel of Rhythmbox.
You can then click on the cd and its tracks will appear in the playlist
as expected.

If you can confirm that this proceedure works, I can then work on
getting the Rhythmbox developers to fix this usability problem.
Obviously, anything more than one-click to get a CD playing is too much.

Let me know how that works for you.

[Bug 478962] Re: After upgrade to Karmic, CD/DVD drive no longer works

2010-01-08 Thread WeatherGod
Drat...

Just to confirm, could you please save a screenshot (Print Screen
button) of the file selection window that you see after clicking on
"Import File..."? Of course make sure that the CD is in the drive.

As for the odd behavior for when you click on the Rhythmbox icon, it
might be going into "System Tray Mode" or whatever they call it. The
second click on the program might then bring up the familiar window. In
the upper-right hand corner, next to your Date and Time, is the "System
Tray". The volume control is there, and Rhythmbox may also be there
after your first click.

That is also a very nice quote.

Have a nice evening.

[Bug 478962] Re: [karmic] Audio CDs do not play in rhythmbox after upgrade

2010-01-21 Thread WeatherGod
Doris, after some discussion with others about your issue, we would like
to have you try an experiment to see if the problem is limited to just
rhythmbox or to other media players. If it isn't already installed,
please use the Software Center to install the program called "Banshee".

The layout for Banshee should be fairly similar to Rhythmbox, so I don't
think you should have too much problems finding your way around it.
Once it is installed and running, insert a CD and see if the CD appears
in the left-hand column for you.

Let us know how that goes for you.

[Bug 478962] Re: [karmic] Audio CDs do not play in rhythmbox after upgrade

2010-01-21 Thread WeatherGod
Wow, I am pleasently surprised. I was almost certain that it wasn't
going to be that easy...

Under System->Preferences, you can go to "Preferred Applications" and
select Banshee for your Multiimedia choice. This may let it
automatically detect that you have inserted a CD.

Anyway, this does help us determine where the fault lies. What will
happen next in this bug report is that you will see a series of
conversations by various programmers. You can largely ignore this
conversation, which will be a good thing because it will likely be
filled with jargon. You can be sure that if we need additional
information from you, we will make sure to ask you directly as a
separate reply.

[Bug 490238] Re: Video Player does not show any video, but has audio, if connected to an external monitor (dual monitor setup)

2010-01-22 Thread WeatherGod
bkp, I am not 100% certain, but you might have to install python-
launchpadlib to make apport-collect work. I don't think apport-collect
was a part of the standard 8.10 install.

Also, because you have a different version and different hardware, I
would suggest filing a new bug report -- just in case the cause for this
one is different. In the new bug report, I would mention this bug
report so that we can mark them as duplicates in the future if that is
the case.

It may also be possible that your problem has already been solved for
your hardware, but was possibly not backported to your OS version (which
sometimes happens because of various reasons). It may be helpful to try
out the LiveCD (or LiveUSB) of Karmic Koala and see if the problem
persists.

Thank you for taking the time to report your issue and thank you for
helping to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 511903] Re: Notification balloon disappears when hovering over it

2010-01-24 Thread WeatherGod
Agreed, this is the "correct" behavior, however, I am not sure it is the
"best" behavior. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I never quite
right about it. Maybe it should fade away, or become translucent?

The original reporter's suggestion of having a "X" to close the
notification is very Windows-esqe and is really only useful if the
bubble was to remain up until the user acknowledges it. That particular
behavior has been often criticized by UI experts and so I would like to
remain away from that.

[Bug 511903] Re: Notification balloon disappears when hovering over it

2010-01-24 Thread WeatherGod
Saverio, the reason for having it disappear is because otherwise, it
would prevent users from being able to click on window elements below
the notification box. For Jaunty Jackalope (9.04), it did not do this,
and it would be fairly annoying if you used an application like Pidgin
that also used notification icons to display status changes of buddies.

I do agree that it can be improved, but not having it disappear was
actually worse than the current behavior.

Also, I am a little confused by your statement "when a user connects to
a wireless network, it says 'click on the icon'". I am not aware of
this behavior. Does this happen only for joining new networks?

[Bug 478962] Re: [karmic] Audio CDs do not play in rhythmbox after upgrade

2010-01-24 Thread WeatherGod
Doris, what Teej is asking for you to do is very similar to what I had
you do for comment #12. The "terminal" is a program found in
"Accessories" and lets you type in commands (much like computers back in
the 80's and early 90's). This time, instead of the "apport-collect
..." command, you will type "rhythmbox -d" and then press enter.
Rhythmbox will then start up. Do not close the terminal until after you
finish with Rhythmbox.

I hope this clears things up.

[Bug 484583] Re: Getting "An internal error has occured: Cyptic error message JX24

2009-11-20 Thread WeatherGod
Hello, and thank you for taking time to report this bug. This seems to
be an issue with a program called "Wine" that is being used to run your
windows-based programs. Therefore, I have moved the bug report to those
people. Hopefully, they will be able to help you further.

I am not personally familiar with mailwasher, but Linux does have
several very nice email clients that you could use. A commonly used
program which is available for Windows and Linux is Thunderbird.

The ability to check your emails without having to download them is not
a feature of a program, but rather, a feature of the protocol that you
use. By default, many email clients use POP by default, which downloads
entire emails. If you use IMAP, then only the email headers (subject
line and such) are downloaded first. I suspect that mailwasher might
have been using IMAP by default.

2009-11-20 Thread WeatherGod
Paul, thank you for taking the time to report this issue. First, as a
test, are you able to perform system updates. If so, then it means that
internet access is working properly. If not, then internet access is
not working.

Also, could you try using another browser like Konqueror to see if you
can access the internet that way?

[Bug 484856] Re: after upgrade from 9.04 to9.10 firefox will not work.

2009-11-22 Thread WeatherGod
Could you please clarify your previous message. Are you stating that a
computer which does have internet access failed to update?

As for the ping test, if it is possible, you can copy-n-paste the
message to a text file and save it to a floppy disk or a usb thumb drive
and then upload the file using a computer with working internet
connection. If it isn't possible, could you please give a description
of what happened?

If the ping test failed, then there is something wrong with the network
configuration, and more diagnostics will be needed. If possible, a
temporary ethernet connection to the router would be helpful in giving
the problem computer internet access to facilitate diagnosis.

[Bug 499392] Re: software-center crashed with TypeError in call_async()

2010-01-31 Thread WeatherGod
@niroxx, @yankeeboy254, while I agree that a problem with the software-
center is certainly an important problem to solve, the importance
setting of "Medium" is appropriate according to the guidelines set at
the webpage: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

"Medium" bugs are for those that have a significant impact upon non-
essential software and non-essential hardware (cameras, sound card,
etc.). "High" bugs are those that have rendered the computer useless
(repetitive crashes, freezes, etc.) and/or there is a risk of "loss of
user data".

The Software Center, while it is Canonical's centerpiece "App Store" in
a sense, is not essential software (as compared to the kernel and gnome,
perhaps). Also, the functionality of the Software Center is also
duplicated by the Synaptics GUI, and as an extreme backup, the 'apt-
get' command-line.

I understand your frustrations with Software Center -- I feel it, too.
However, having the bug set to "Medium" does not diminish the chances of
the problem getting fixed because the Software Center is a high priority
project for Canonical. I fully expect this issue to be solved for the
Lucid release.

Jonas, I have just noticed something odd. You say that you upgraded to
Karmic (9.10), but your log files say that you are using the Jaunty
(9.04) kernel.

Double-check your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. If you are using Karmic
(9.10), your kernel version should be 2.6.31. If you don't see that
entry in your menu.lst file, make a backup of it, and then run 'sudo
update-grub' to rebuild that file. Then boot into the 2.6.31 kernel and
see if your touchpad works.

[Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2009-12-13 Thread WeatherGod
Moving this over to tthe video driver package. Possibly a conflict with
Compiz?

** Description changed:

- This is my problem -- I can't boot in Gnome proper -- must use failsafe
- .. Just did an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 ... upgrade went ok..
- then within 30 seconds in Gnome.. it freezes... freezes to the point
- where I can't even move the mouse, type anything.. must do hard reboot.
+ Due to the large number of other people posting to this bug report, the
+ information provided by the original reporter "The Founder" has been
+ summarized below for ease of reading.

- Now Gnome failsafe works fine, I installed KDE to see if that works..
- no problem... just Gnome.
+ === Description ===
+ Ubuntu 9.10

- I can't even see what the problem is because the computer locks up to
- the point where a hard reboot is needed.
+ On boot, the computer reaches the login screen and allows you to enter
+ your username and password. Then within 1-15 seconds after you see the
+ desktop the machine freezes.

+ "freezes" by definition means the machine is completely 100% non-
+ responsive. The mouse will not move. The keyboard will not respond.
+
+ After a hard shut down (IE: unplug the machine from the UPS) you can
+ reach the login screen again after a reboot, at this point if you select
+ fail-safe the machine runs as expected... but only in fail-safe move.
+
+ KDE and X run fine. This bug is specific to Gnome Standard.
+
+ === Hardware ===
  It's a Compaq Presario - Celeron D
  Intel 950 Video Card
  1.5 GB ram

- I cannot provide you with any more information regarding it because
- honestly the computer locks up to the point where I can't reach terminal
- or click on anything to find out what is wrong.
-
- Now I am not a big fan of having to use Gnome Failsafe... I can
- provide you any information you need when the computer is in Gnome
- failsafe.. but I cannot report squat when it locks up in Gnome
-
- Worth Nothing, this machine ran Ubuntu 9.04 without fail or errors...

The Founder, which version of the xserver-xorg-video-intel package are
you using? Also, can you please post the output of the command 'lspci
-v' to this bug report (as a file, please).

Lastly, could you see if disabling your Compiz settings help you at all?
It would confirm a conflict between your video card and Compiz.

[Bug 486207] Re: sound is disabled

2009-12-13 Thread WeatherGod
Mezquitale, I am assuming that you are using OpenArea for Urban Terror?
If so, there might be a fix. Try installing the libsdl1.2debian-
pulseaudio package (as opposed to the default libsdl1.2debian package).

More information can be found here:

%20SDL-based%20games

Let us know if that helps.
