Doris, after some discussion with others about your issue, we would like to have you try an experiment to see if the problem is limited to just rhythmbox or to other media players. If it isn't already installed, please use the Software Center to install the program called "Banshee".
The layout for Banshee should be fairly similar to Rhythmbox, so I don't think you should have too much problems finding your way around it. Once it is installed and running, insert a CD and see if the CD appears in the left-hand column for you.
