bkp, I am not 100% certain, but you might have to install python- launchpadlib to make apport-collect work. I don't think apport-collect was a part of the standard 8.10 install.
Also, because you have a different version and different hardware, I would suggest filing a new bug report -- just in case the cause for this one is different. In the new bug report, I would mention this bug report so that we can mark them as duplicates in the future if that is the case. It may also be possible that your problem has already been solved for your hardware, but was possibly not backported to your OS version (which sometimes happens because of various reasons). It may be helpful to try out the LiveCD (or LiveUSB) of Karmic Koala and see if the problem persists.
