Re: [RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread Mike Godwin
Ooh, ooh, I got one too! :) Found it on local CL, looking for an Atlantis
at the time but this came up for a steal of a price, so who could
resist? White with blue accents It too has downtube cable stops rather than
shifter bosses. I would prefer shifter bosses, but for a bike in my size
and decent parts and great price within 20 miles ... Came with Rich built
ultegra hubs/open pro rims, 3x 14 g straight gauge spokes. The bike felt
dead, not Surly Crosscheck dead but nothing like a Legolas, or my Lemond
Zurich or even mid 70s Bob Jackson. The shoes it runs on now are velocity
aerohead/dura ace 7x00 (thanks Mark R) with 14-16-14 g spokes, continental
4000 GP extra special wunder bar etc tires. Much more lively ride. Fits 36
mm measured tires. Braking by Royal Gran Comp/koolstop. I removed the
bulky ultegra brakes and fugly 4-arm 105 black crank. It sports a Ritchey
Logic crank with willow rings (thanks David B).

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread Lum Gim Fong
I guess the thinner wall tubing (6/4/6 DT/TT) , shorter chainstays, and
hand trimmed HT lugs?
The early ones had the trimmed HT lugs, iirc. You can see the points cut
off.
Not that that would really make any difference, I don't think.
>From a Grant interview we know that the Roadeo tubing is: ("Mix of
Reynolds 725 and TrueTemp OX Plat. As thin as I/Grant could stand to go.
(0.65 butts in the tt and dt, with 0.45 bellies")
I weigh 146lbs. Have weighed from there up to 178 on my other four previous
8/5/8 Rivs that rode great but sometimes on hills felt as if I could not
get out of my own way on the 8/5/8's, regardless of tire types.

So maybe the lighter tubing of the Roadeo behaves better for my weight
class? Maybe 8/5/8 is more cooperative for people in the 175+lb. range like
a 6/4/6 would be for people below 175? Just speculating. But I have owned
three 8/5/8 Rivs and the Ram was best at climbing and had lighter tubing
rear triangle than Sam and Bleriots I had. But it still would bog down on
hills but not as bad as the Bleriots and Sam did for me. Though I have
loved riding them all.

I also zip tie basket to my racks. Sadly haven’t found them to work in
perpetuity, it does eventually break. Specifically, the basket wires
eventually break near the ties. I’ve also had some of the basket welds
fail.

I wish the basket would last as long as the zip ties!

[RBW] Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread Alan H
Hi All,

Looking for some feedback from folks here about the orange Roadinis.

Last week I placed an order for one of the new orange Roadinis in a size 50
(thanks to my darned 80 cm pbh). After a week without any news from Riv
(and having my cc charged), I called to find out when the bike would ship.
I was told that they had received a lot of orders and were running a light
crew because of Interbike and that my bike would pack and ship yesterday
(Friday).

Yesterday I got a call from Vince saying that there was a problem. He told
me that the brake bridge on the orange Roadini frames was in the wrong
place and that standard road brake calipers wouldn't work. While he told me
the frame would work with longer pull brakes (like Tektros or Pauls),
frames with the correct brake bridge wouldn't be back in until December.

Needless to say I'm a little disappointed and frustrated, especially since
I logged on here today and saw folks talking about their new orange
Roadinis. Has anyone else gotten a similar story from Riv?

On a related topic, since I'm apparently not getting a Roadini, does anyone
have experience with Soma's road frames? In particular I like the look of
the Stanyan
in pearl white. It has a geometry similar to their ES model and is a fully
lugged steel frame at a very attractive price point. The Roadini was
obviously my first choice, but I wonder how the Soma stacks up in terms of
build and ride qualities.

Thanks in advance for you input!

-Alan

For the curious, the tubing wall thickness measurements I've taken of
several similar-sized Rivendell bikes can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

Please note that I strongly suspect Riv uses different gauges of tubing for
different sizes, so these measurements almost certainly do not reflect the
tubing spec of smaller frames. I look forward to measuring other sizes and
finding out for sure!

That said, since the Hunqapillar, Rambouillet, Roadeo, and Hilsen shown at
that link are all in the same size "neighborhood" it probably does give a
fair idea of the relative differences between the models.

If anyone is around the SF Bay Area and would like their bikes measured,
please drop me a line!

Reed

Sorry to hear that, and I understand your frustration. I’m sure the folks at

If you can’t wait, you might want to consider a Black Mtn Road. I have one, and
it’s the only reason I don’t have a Roadini.

[RBW] Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Personally, I would consider the extra clearance a plus. That's commonly a spot
where fender clearance is reduced by brake interference. I understand not
wanting that if you don't plan on ever fendering the bike, or don't want to
maximize tire size, but I'd personally only consider it a problem if it had
REDUCED clearance.

I am waiting an indeterminate time for my next bike that’s on order, so my
advice is that you be patient and wait until the right Leo comes in. This is
easy advice for me to follow myself because I have a lot of bikes. If you have
zero bikes today and need one, then it seems to make sense to find a substitute
immediately. If you have one or more bikes today, I advise waiting for your
Leo, enjoying the build this winter and have fun on it in the spring.

Sorry about your disappointment too. When I ordered my second custom, it
arrived with the brake caliper mounting hole just a few mm too high in the
fork crown, and I had to either file the (57 mm max reach) brake pad slots
or -- this is what I did in the event -- use a drop bolt.

I complained to Riv, and I have to say that they took care of it quickly.

Why not wait 3 months? I don't know Somas, but I do know something about
Riv road bikes, and me, I'd wait.

Are you considering getting the Roadini now anyway and using one of the longer

Aha. That may explain the difference in your experience. I'm almost 30 lb
heavier, and I'm pretty sure that the tubing on my customs is not as
thinwall (Chauncey Matthews came by to pick up the '99 Joe Starck frame --
f/f/hs -- for alteration. He lifted it and said, "Huh. Not so light.") But
damn, that bike just feels fast, and it has been surprising me in that way
for coming on to 20 years next April. Light wheels, certainly, but I'm
convinced that fit/position/geometry has a effect. (The '99 Joe is 18.1 lb
on a digital scale with conventional parts.)

Personally I'd wait for a corrected orange Roadini, Riv probably won't sell him
a "bad" one anyway. The whatever-model-it-is Shimano mid-reach brakes on mine
stop notably better than the long-reach Tektros I had on my Cheviot.

Re: [RBW] Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread Justin, Oakland
Getting a Riv is not the same as getting a SOMA. Getting a SOMA is not the same
as an all City. Etc etc. If you want a Roadini either ask for the current bike
with extra clearance or wait. If you want a chubby tired road bike then All
City, SOMA, Black Mountain Cycles (what I would pick) or vintage 80s bikes can
all get you there.

Re: [RBW] Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread Ray Varella
Personally, I would wait.
A couple months go by quickly but a compromise you make to get a different
frame will be with you for a long time.

If you have something else to ride in the short term it will be worth the wait.

When something is slightly out of spec, it’s likely much worse on the companies
who build and sell goods than to the consumer is alerted to the issue instead
of it being shipped.

I might be a little bummed about the extra waiting period but I would be very
grateful for having the issue corrected instead of being shipped a frame with a
measurement out of spec.

[RBW] Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Alan. Expectations can be premeditated disapointments, aye? Grin. Perhaps
it’s time to try reframing expectations and see if that helps clarify things in
your mind? Getting the right bike matters, and Rivendell is very good at doing
that, even though it can take time. If you’re in a rush, you have options and
they aren’t very compromising ones. Looking through previous threads, it looks
like you have a Clem? Is it possible to practice delayed gratification for a
few months (December is coming fast if you’re knitting a sweater for Christmas,
slow if you’re waiting for a bike. Grin.)? The bottom line fantastic news is
you are working with a solid company who bends over backwards to make sure you
end up with a fantastic bike that rides like ... a bike should. That is worth a
lot, and, to me, is the expectation that trumps all others.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

What kinda wheels you have on it?

The Ram rode the same for me at any weight. Not as good on hills as Roadeo,
but good enough and a fantastic, comfy ride.
It also has a little more room for fenders and 32mm tires than Roadeo.
I love the blue paint, too. If I ever have to repaint the Roadeo I think I
would do it in Ram blue, if I can ever find out what that color is called.

But if someone wanted to trade me their Roadeo for it I would take them up
on the offer!!

They have a list of Rivdealers on their website. You could call around and
see if anyone has a proper brake bridged Roadini.
But I would wait, too. Worth it.
If you get the Soma, you might one day think that you should have got the
Roadini instead.
The Roadini is made with very thought out tubing.
I don't know what the Soma tubing is, but I could email you the Roadini
tube specs if you want to compare.

What about gearing? Are they identically geared? To me, the gearing is what
makes a bike feel sluggish or not. If I’ve got the right gears for how I feel,
the terrain, the weather, the load all feels good. The same bike can feel
great one day and not the next depending on conditions. All else just seems
way way secondary to me.

In regards to such rims , I suspect any bike shop that has a supplier
catalog either in paper or web could look up such a re-quest for specific
width 27.5 rims, but it would help if you had certain specific models in
mind as I am unaware if the catalogs list specs beyond the essentials of
identification .

Or, contact mfr. distributors listed on their website(if listed) , as
that's who the mfr. would direct you if you contacted them directly.

[RBW] Re: 56 & 58 Hunq standover with max tire?

2018-09-22 Thread tc
Max, good question, and the one I'm pondering too. I would assert that the
Riv fit method favors road riding, Or at least not majority singletrack
riding. This is based on owning (or having previously owned) a 61 Roadini,
59 Clem H, 62 SimpleOne, 64 Atlantis, and 58 Sam. Plus MTBs from other
manufacturers.

My PBH is 90.5. When I straddle my 64 Atlantis with 2.1 Nano's, the top
tube is "right up in there", as in, about a mm shy of my PBH. I don't care
... I love that bike and I only ride it on the road. I hope I never have
to sell it.

When I straddle my 58 Sam (currently for sale), which has a standover of
85.6cm (measured with the 38 Kendas at 45 lbs on Alex DM18 rims). That
height is fine for roadish riding, but is still a bit 'high" for the
singletrack in my area.

Thus my estimate that something with a max standover of 84 or less would be
ok. So, for me, PBH minus 6.5cm might make sense for singletrack-favored
riding...which means a standover of 83-84ish cm. Others may be more or
less conservative.

Therefore, I'm gonna seek out more details on a 56 hunq, which according to
Stephen (who had one), had a standover of 84.4 with cliffhangers and 2.4s.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

The Ram and Rodeo have the same exact cassette model and toothcounts.
Ram has 40T XD2big ring.
Roadeo 43 XD2 big ring.
I only use big rings on both. No front derailers on the bikes.
I am consistantly in higher cassette gears on Roadeo on same routes, even
though it has a bigger T count big ring.

On my previous bikes I would have good days and bad days. On the rodeo I’ve
only had good days so far. It takes way less effort to peddle the rodeo down
the road.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-09-22 Thread Bill Schairer
Patrick,

Admittedly, my experience with different bikes is limited compared to many but,
between the two bikes I ride regularly, there is probably a 10 lb or so
difference and they both go just fine. The lighter one is set up with granny
half step gearing and so is easier to get just the right gear and maybe go
faster. My Atlantis, the heavier, has half steps but they require double
shifts and I am much more likely to feel bogged down on it BUT, on the days
where the gearing happens to be just right, I’ve set some of my PR’s on Strava.
The one I’ve ridden the most recently is usually the one that feels the best
until I adjust on the other after a few rides and then it feels the best.

Ride a fully loaded tandem for two weeks then get on your single and it will be
practically uncontrollable until you adjust. I think the same when switching
singles just less dramatic. I bought a junker Windsor off CL for the parts.
The first time I rode it, I couldn’t stand it. Rode it a couple more times
and, you know what, it wasn’t half bad. I adjusted.

I’ve ridden my son’s plastic bike and a friend’s Seven Ti, both far ligher than
anything I have with fancy wheels etc and, while I loved the Seven (perfect
fit) and hated the plastic (admittedly the fit was not great), I didn’t feel
faster on either going up down or somewhere in between. Both had compact
doubles which I simply detest - my best gears are the most cross chained with
an awkward shift right in the middle. So, I guess I need to get a Seven with
a granny and half step and see if I still agree with myself. I look from time
to time, grin. Regardless, unless they are set up exactly the same, I think I
(the I emphasized somehow) can’t tell nothin.

Now, my Bike Friday is slower. It just doesn’t have the roll. Small wheels or
is it the IGH?

It would seem the case is closed! Not that it wasn’t for you already. Now,
should I be happy with my ignorant bliss or try to convince my wife I need to
keep searching? I hope that isn’t sounding sarcastic because, if so, it is not
intended. It may just be that I’m not capable of discerning differences others
can, something I guess that can cut both ways. That is unquestionably the case
when it comes to smell and taste in comparison to my wife. When on the GDMBR
the weight I was carrying would vary quite a bit day to day depending on food
supplies or the times we would lighten the load of the sick and I honestly was
oblivious to it while others would be arguing to ditch food they thought
expendable. To me, I was like whatever.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-09-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Thinking more clearly, one of the bikes that just "felt" right from the
beginning was a porky Herse -- earlier owners had dumped it because of its
(for them) excessively stout tubing. Despite the weight penalty, it was one
of those bikes that seemed to require a cog 1 tooth smaller. Too bad that
the handling wasn't up to my benchmark Rivendell standards.

The gofast just feels fast, but (as above) it's not just the 7 or 8 lb
weight saving over my almost identical '03, which fits and is set up the
same -- this one has all the accoutrements: racks, fenders, dyno lighting,
and so forth. That is wonderful, but it doesn't feel as fast as the gofast.

I know about adjustments. My Rivs have Qs of 130 mm; my Matthews has a Q of
160. I get on the Matthews after riding the Rivs for a week, and it feels
awkward -- for about 500 feet. (Tho' I would happily reduce the Q by 10 or
20 mm if I could.) And there's the fixed versus free adjustment; the
Matthews is the only bike of 3 that has a freewheel.

I'd expect taller wheels to roll easier, all else equal; certainly, the 20"
wheels on the Dahon Hon Solo feel more sluggish, but then we are comparing
Tioga PowerBands with Elk Passes and Big Ones. Funny, I am beginning to
think that the Big Ones (700C C 60) roll better even than the Compass Elk
Passes, 559 X 29.

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Keep in mind that these tubes are OS, so the 8/5/8 will flex similarly to a
9/6/9, and the 6/4.5 would translate roughly to a 7/5/7 in terms of
measurable flexing properties. It of course matters more when you are
comparing Rivs to vintage standard tubing steels like 531, Columbus SL,
Ishiwata 022 and Tange Prestige.

I kind of get the planing thing, but I'm not convinced that tubing of the
main triangle is the main reason a bike will feel good. Tires as we know
makes a big difference, as do lots of other factors that add up. Bottom
line for me these days is, I'm pretty easy to pleasy.

You must be a strong rider to be able to ride down the road without loads
effecting you.

I am a weak rider so maybe that’s why I feel a difference.? I don’t know. When

going to be so vastly different.

Maybe strong riders can ride the bikes down the road no matter what it is and
feels the same to them. Big muscle maybe overpowers the frame diffs?

[RBW] Re: 56 & 58 Hunq standover with max tire?

2018-09-22 Thread Max S
Thanks for your thoughts / notes, Tom. My PBH is ~89.5 cm, and I’m used to
riding a 57-59 cm (c-c) traditional road bike with ~7-8 cm bb drop, or even an
all-rounder with 33 mm tires. Road fit I’ve now figured out — racing and sport
and leisure.

Now I am riding about 90% dirt / gravel / macadam roads, where I find 700x33 or
650x38 tires to be perfectly adequate, but the 650x42 on my Ebisu or even
650x60 tires on the Riv tandem feel even better.

I’d like to start riding some trails again, but my last MTB was a MB-1 that I
sold nearly 20 years ago. (Well, I briefly had a XL Singular Gryphon, which in
retrospect I should have run with a Jones H-bar and kept, but rarely took it on
trails.)

So, now I am wondering if my current bike (e.g. Ebisu) will suffice for trails
(perhaps some underbiking?), or if I should treat myself to a Riv off-road
model of one type or another. I end up more or less in the middle of sizes on
most Riv models, but the 56 cm Hunq could be a good fit. Given the price
(custom range now?..), one would want a good fit. :-)

“You must be a strong rider to be able to ride down the road without loads
effecting you.”

Lum,

I don’t really think so but I’ve never raced and almost always ride alone
except when touring and so don’t really have a lot of comparison points.
Sometimes others pass me and sometimes I pass others. I do shift a LOT and pay
a lot of attention to my gearing, trying to fine tune it. I guess it is just
my sensitivity level isn’t very fine tuned and not just as it might relate to
cycling. My wife might complain that it is too hot today or too cold today or
too humid and I’m likely to think “really? Is it hot today? I guess so, I
hadn’t really noticed.” Like I said, I think this can cut both ways.
Sometimes I wish I were more discerning and other times I’m glad I’m not.

[RBW] FS: TA Carmina Crankset Triple

2018-09-22 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
(Reposted with the correct name for the crankset)

Offered here before I send it to eBay: TA Specialites Carmina triple crankset.
For 9/10 speed systems. 48/36/28 rings. 167.5mm arms. Fits square tapered
bottom bracket.

Rare and pretty and French. Very little use—rings are like new. With
self-extracting crank bolts.

$350 shipped in the CONUS. You'd pay almost $600 for the same crankset new!

I love this crankset, but I don’t have a bike that needs it!

Based on the feedback I got here and from Vince and from carefully
considering what I really want, I've opted to just wait until the in-spec
frames are delivered in November or December. I'm lucky to have a Clem and
a Homer to ride in the mean time so I'll wait for the road bike that I
really want rather than settle for something just because I can get it now.

Thanks to you all for helping me work through this and from helping me not
make the decision I would regret!

2018-09-22 Thread Alan H
Okay Folks, after 10 days and a decent amount of interest I still haven't
found a buyer for the 52 Clem-L so I'll drop the price to $800. Again,
complete build minus a saddle. Hit me up with a PM if you're interested.

[RBW] Re: Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread tc
Alan, I'm glad you've decided to wait, though I understand your
frustration. The Roadini is such a nice bike, and worth the wait. No one
here (who has actually ridden one) will tell you otherwise!

If it makes you feel any better, I ordered mine in April and didn't get it
until August. What took so long? Well, I had a custom paint job done,
and, the original water-based decals basically eroded when clear coat was
applied, so I had to wait until the non-water-based decal vendor shipped
them. I had 2 other bikes to ride, so my frustration was minimized.

I look fwd to your pictures :)

Tom

[RBW] Re: Billie Bar vs. Jones Loop H-Bar

2018-09-22 Thread tc
If considering any Jones bar (31.8 clamp dia), you may also consider the Nitto
UI-12 quill stem on ebay
.

That bar (and the Billie, for that matter) allow for quite a bit of
torque. To counteract that torque, the Nitto UI-12 has a 4-bolt clamp.
Nice looking, and I could've stood on the Jones bar I had on my Clem and
not moved it. Note it does not have the height of a Tallux nor Technomic.
You can get the UI-12 on eBay in various stem reach lengths (currently 60 -
120mm).

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread Lum Gim Fong
True, but tires and wheel size/makes made no diff, in my experience between the
bike models.
(GB30,42/Compass28,32, 38, 42/Pasela/Swifty/Rumpkin/Marathons). Whole spectrum
tried. Alleged fastest and alleged slowest tires made. 650b/700c. Twin
Holla’/GB/Pacenti/Synergy/A23/CR18/, LX/VO,Velocity/105, Sapim/DTSwiss/Wheelman
wheelsets.

Each bike model retained its innate ride characteristics no matter what I used,
though suppler tires helped them each along individually. All my Rivs had
Rivish Nitto/Sugino builds, except my 55 Bleriot was Ultegra’d out. Still rode
like my heavier 53 Nitto/Sugino Bleriot. Sam rides like Bleriot. Ram a step
above. Roadeo a leap above them all.

Roadeo in a different efficiency/speed class than my other 4 rivs.

Regardless of tire model, I found that a Bleriot still rides like a Bleriot;
Sam like a Sam; a Ram like a Ram, etc. Roadeo a step above in ease of movin on
down the road.

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread Joe Bernard
I think what you get with a Roadeo in the 55-under sizes is basically a
production version of Mark Abele's custom road bikes. He's a light, fast guy
and it's but to work for him. I want one!

[RBW] cliffhanger rims and canti brakes

2018-09-22 Thread dirtp
Hi, everyone, I'm building a Joe Appaloosa and I'm thinking about buying
some Cliffhanger rims for it, but I've heard that some people have had
problems with wide rims and cantis. I've seen several Joes on-line with
Cliffhangers and V-brakes, though. Does anyone have any experience with
Cliffhangers and cantis?

Thanks very much!
