Max, good question, and the one I'm pondering too. I would assert that the
Riv fit method favors road riding, Or at least not majority singletrack
riding. This is based on owning (or having previously owned) a 61 Roadini,
59 Clem H, 62 SimpleOne, 64 Atlantis, and 58 Sam. Plus MTBs from other
manufacturers.

My PBH is 90.5. When I straddle my 64 Atlantis with 2.1 Nano's, the top
tube is "right up in there", as in, about a mm shy of my PBH. I don't care
... I love that bike and I only ride it on the road. I hope I never have
to sell it.

When I straddle my 58 Sam (currently for sale), which has a standover of
85.6cm (measured with the 38 Kendas at 45 lbs on Alex DM18 rims). That
height is fine for roadish riding, but is still a bit 'high" for the
singletrack in my area.

Thus my estimate that something with a max standover of 84 or less would be
ok. So, for me, PBH minus 6.5cm might make sense for singletrack-favored
riding...which means a standover of 83-84ish cm. Others may be more or
less conservative.

Therefore, I'm gonna seek out more details on a 56 hunq, which according to
Stephen (who had one), had a standover of 84.4 with cliffhangers and 2.4s.
