Re: Mac mini with M1 chip and questions

2022-09-22 Thread John D. Lipsey
You can use windows on an M1 Mac mini. The only way I found to do this is to
download a program called UTM. You then need to get an ISO image of Windows 11,
the version of Windows that seems to run on ARM processors, and install that
into UTM. The setup was a little bit tricky, but definitely doable.
I also use my Mac mini without a monitor. The only issue I had in setting it up
was the requirement that I needed a mouse or a trackpad. If you don’t plan on
using one long-term, you could always buy a trackpad, use it for set up, and
take advantage of Apple‘s 14 day return policy to return the trackpad. However,
if you ever need to boot into the recovery partition for any reason, you will
need the trackpad, so it might just be best to keep the trackpad in case you
ever need it again.
Hope that helps!

Joseph,
How did you get Surf Shark to work accessibly on your Mac?
As I recall, when I tried it back in May or June, it was not a great accessible
experience. Or maybe I'm just missing something?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Re: changing the options for opening itemes?

2014-02-11 Thread John D. Lipsey
I suppose my first question is why would you want to? VO shift space twice
seems to add more keystrokes, even though maybe not necessarily much more time,
to opening things.

Just curious what purpose this would serve.

selecting non-contiguous items in finder?

2014-02-26 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I'm almost certain someone posted about this before, but I don't seem to have
saved the message.

I have a folder that contains some mkv video files and some mp3 files of the
same content. I want to delete the mkv files, but not the mp3s of same.
However, the files go 01 title.mkv, 01 title.mp3, 02 title.mkv, etc. How can I
select all the mkv files in one go without selecting the mp3s as well?

Thanks in advance.

extracting audio from DVDs?

2014-03-06 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys:

I'm wondering what are people's preferences for extracting audio from DVDs?
I'm thinking physical discs, but I also have some iso files of DVDs as well.

I used DVD audio extractor bakc in the days of windows, but I recall finding
the mac version less than accessible.

Free solutions are, of course, amazing. However, at this point I just want to
trim these things down in size considerably when they're living on my hard
drive. As long as it's not a recurring payment or an overly expensive one, I'll
take those suggestions too.

Thanks in advance, guys!

Re: free software for solving capchas on mac

Does this software work if you have screen curtain enabled? I always have my
screen curtain on, because i don't want people peering at my screen when I'm

turn off every time I go to a page that could potentially have a CAPTCHA.

Re: program to batch extract audio from video files?

2014-03-17 Thread John D. Lipsey
Cameron:

I use a program called Adapter. It's done a great job of this in every
scenario I've tested it with. Simply do a google search for adapter converter
for mac. I think that's how I found it, at least.

One note: The button to start the conversion isn't actually labeled. It's the
very last button, directly to the left of a checkbox, which is the bottom most
element in the window.

The only thing this doesn't do is delete the video files when it's done.
Deleting those after is a simple enough task however, unless someone knows of a
way to have it convert and delete.

Let me know if you have questions about this program at all.

If you can open it with hand brake, you can convert the file to either mkv or

Re: program to batch extract audio from video files?

2014-03-18 Thread John D. Lipsey
You don't really need any of the buttons as far as I can tell. The things to
change the format you're saving to and the bitrate, etc are all in a scroll
areal to the right of the brouse button and table where the files you've added
for conversion appear. The only button you need is the button I mentioned
earlier, that actually starts the conversion.

Re: heading levels

2014-05-05 Thread John D. Lipsey
Is there a quick way to toggle single letter navigation on the fly? I use
quicknav all the time, but have never used single letter navigation before.
It's something I'd like to play with a bit, but only if I can quickly toggle it
on and off. Even if not, it may be worth poking around.

yosemite strangeness

2015-06-06 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

I'm almost ready to bite the bullet and upgrade my mac to Yosemite. However,
the strangest thing is stopping me. I've observed it on 3 machines at various
places, but people don't seem to confirm that it's a thing.

Note: The below behavior is unique to the standard view in mail, which I
prefer. It doesn't seem to happen in classic layout.

In Mavericks, the mailboxes list, which I use quite frequently, is just a
couple of items off to the left of the messages column view once you stop
interacting with the messages column. However, in Yosemite, it's a good 4 or
so items to the right. Visually, it seems it hasn't changed at all, but
voiceover seems to think moving to the right is now a good way to get to the
mailboxes list, even though visually it's still off to the left.

This is enough to drive me batty, and the only thing really stopping me from
upgrading. Is there a workaround for this incredibly odd behavior? I can
probably learn to live with it, and I know I could do voiceover command T to
jump to the table, but that's kind of an awkward keystroke on a laptop, for me
personally.

Thanks in advance for any insights into this.

Re: Major frustrations and a big predicament

2015-06-10 Thread John D. Lipsey
One wonders why they would make it so you can’t DFU your device back to the
last nonbeta release of iOS.

I was going to renew my developer membership and test 9, but if I can’t
downgrade to a stable release for my day to day use, and jsut beta when I have
time for that task specifically, I don’t think I’ll reenroll this year.

Sad day.

As far as I understand it, messages and chat for facebook are essentially the
same thing. If you chat someone and they’re offline, it shows up in their
messages for them to view later and respond to as they wish. If you’re both
online, you can chat with each other in real time.

No, when you install the beta version of iOS anything, it’s just like
installing a public nonbeta release. You can install it without removing any
content, as long as you choose to update to, rather than restore to the beta
version.

The only time you have to erase the device is if you wish to downgrade from the
beta back to the current publically available version.

Hope that helps.

looking for a virtual machine

2015-07-26 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

Not sure anyone can help me with this, as it’s kind of an unusual request, but
here goes.

My girlfriend has a MacBook Air, 13 inch from last year. She’s comfortable
doing most things on her mac, but is going off to grad school this year. Her
school’s disabilities services department is familiar with JAWS and windows,
but has no familiarity with Voiceover and OSX. One of the primary programs they
use for her grad work they tell her works brilliantly under windows with JAWS,
but no clue about Mac accessibility. They’re trying to get her a copy to test,
but just in case.

The only virtual machine I have available is an XP machine that works great for
mudding and Quenton C’s playroom, but web browsing is painful on it (I never do
it so never bothered to even see if it was really doable). She would like a
Windows 7 machine. I suppose I could go around and try to build her one, but if
someone happens to have one already created and would be willing to share, that
would be ideal.

If you like, you may write me off list about this at johnl1...@gmail.com, so we
dont’ clutter the list with traffic that isn’t really related to the primary
purpose of this list.

Thanks in advance!

Re: It's finally here, a comprehensive guide to Pages on the Mac with VoiceOver

2016-02-28 Thread John D. Lipsey
I see both sides of this argument.

On the one hand, having such a comprehensive resource freely available means
that it can be given to as wide of an audience as humanly possible. However,
I’m sure putting a book like this together is no simple task. It probably
requires a lot of time—time that the author could be using to do other things
for themselves and or their family. I have no problem compensating somebody
for something as long as it’s well researched and full of useful knowledge.

Also, as a person who has as one of his duties teaching Mac OS with Voiceover
to clients, I’m more than willing to grab this book and encorporate some of its
information into training sessions as appropriate. Also, even though $35 may
seem like a lot of money—indeed it certainly may be for many people—it’s not,
in the grand scheme of things, a bad price. I could see a book like this
priced at or above $100, though I’ve come to expect reasonable prices from
Mosen Consulting, and would be shocked if they ever tried to charge that much
for this knowledge.

That’s all. Back to silently observing I go.

As much as I enjoy free information, I’m going to go buy a copy of the book

strange behavior since update to IOS

2013-10-23 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this, and could possibly know what's
causing it.

I installed the latest IOS7 update last night on my iPhone 5. Since the update,
I've noticed that Voiceover now gives me to "Screen locked." messages. One is,
as expected, almost immediately after I lock the phone. The other is delayed
about 9-10 seconds.

I've learned that, in order to reproduce this issue, the phone actually has to
be unlocked. Simply looking at a notification on the lock screen, or hitting
home to check the time and then letting the screen lock doesn't produce the
same issue.

Anybody else? Any solutions for a fix?

Thanks in advance.

upgrading, downgrading, choices oh my!

2013-10-27 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hey all:

I'm considering upgrading my 2010 Macbook from Lion to Mavericks. Various
people have told me my little old macbook should support the upgrade well
enough, and it may run the new OS better than Lion.

If this is not the case, or if I'm just ridiculously dissatisfied with mail and
GMail, how easy is it to downgrade? Are there step-by-step instructions on
downgrading somewhere?

Also and somewhat related, I'm planning on giving this macbook to my brother
once I purchase a new macbook air. What is the easiest way to remove all of my
content, so my brother essentially gets a new machine with an OS on it?

Thanks in advance!

issue with messages

2013-12-13 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

This is my second day running Mavericks on a brand new 13 inch MacBook air. So
far, with the exception I'm about to mention, I'm enjoying Mavericks!

Every time I go into messages and try to start an iMessage conversation, I get
the following message: " is not registered
with iMessage." I know for a fact that these people use iMessage, because I
message them on my phone regularly. Is there a fix for this issue?

Thanks in advance for any assistance with this matter.

Best wishes:

emogees break Voiceover

Hey guys:

Every time I come across an emogee item, unless it's at the end of a

Is there a way to fix this issue? I'm running Mavericks on a brand new 13 inch

missing some mail. Is this still a thing?

2013-12-15 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys:

I checked my mail on my iPhone yesterday. I saved a message with some content
that I would prefer to access on my mac. I came home last night, hopped on my
mac, and no message. A bunch of new message came in, but the one I left in my
inbox never pulled into my mac. My gmail is set up to use imap, so the message
should have still been on the server as far as I can tell.

I feel like I'm posting entirely too much now that I have a new computer!

Re: 10.9.1 Disappointing

2013-12-16 Thread John D. Lipsey
I second Jonathan's opinion, at least with regards to the mail messages in
conversation issue. Also, I was hoping they would fix this VO not speaking
when you wake up the mac issue. Sadly, this remains for me.

Unfortunately, all of those messages about dealing with that were posted before
I got my new computer, so I didn't take much note of them. If anyone could
compile some tips and tricks to get VO back after the computer wakes up, that
would be most appreciated. I can always restart the machine, and always have
so far, but if I can avoid that it would be amazing.

Best,

very strange, annoying and frustrating audio issue

2013-12-18 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys:

This just started today, and it's most frustrating!! I'm going to make a genius
bar appointment Saturday, but if anyone has a fix before then I'll gladly take
it!

I noticed, starting this afternoon for seemingly no reason, strange audio
artifacts popping up in my headphones. This only happens when using
headphones, any headphones, in my headphone jack. I don't see the issue through
speakers in the MacBook or in USB headsets. A restart hasn't help the issue.
While I don't mind using USB headsets, I like to keep my options as open as
possible.

It's hard to explain exactly what these artifacts are, but I notice them most
of all when there are system sounds, the voiceover clicks, etc. They don't seem
to appear during actual voiceover speech if that's all there is to hear.
They're strange hissing noises, some of which remind me of badly tuned radios.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Cheers!

-John

possible solution to the voiceover problem

2013-12-22 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys:

None of the solutions to no voiceover when waking my mac seem to work reliably.
So, on the advice of a friend who found this tip on a forum (no audio after
waking isn't unique to the voiceover community) I tried the following.

Note: This may have been offered as a solution before, and i don't know why it
works, but here it is.

Further note: I've only tried this twice so far, but it worked 100 percent of
the time as of this writing.

Simply go into system preferences. Under the energy preferences category,
uncheck the box that says put hard disks to sleep when possible. That's it.

Curious to know if this works for others, and even more curious to know why
this seems to solve the problem.

Thanks!

Re: Does Anyone Else Have to Restart Mail Periodically to Get New Messages?

I'm having the same issue. The check for new nail command doesn't seem to help.
Only restarting mail fixes the issue.

piano pub replacement for Pandora

2014-07-30 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

Thanks to Twitter, I just discovered this wonderful little app for my mac. It
is accessible, however some of the buttons are weirdly labeled. Just remember,
if you don't like the label the app has assigned a button you can use VO slash
to rename it.

Here's the link to the page for Hermes. http://hermesapp.org

Enjoy, and let me know if you have issues.

Re: Need help! Very frustrated with mail on the Mac!

I, too, am having no issues with my gmail on my Mac. Even back in the first

I'm puzzled as to why it works well for some and not hardly at all for others.

 Hi,

So, you think you're ready to move up to the VO big leagues eh?

I tend to go with self help. I often check out the VO-H command menus
reading the command descriptions to see what I can do. I also look in the
VO Utility application where you can assign actions to keys and see and
control verbosity. I was using VO before the trackpad commander, so I tend
to use the keyboard commands exclusively. If you are a trackpad user, look
into the commander functions, or the Numpad commander functions, and use
both keyboard and trackpad to your advantage. There's a lot of
customizations you can make within the VO Utility.

I think my favorite command beyond the basics is simply the VO Shift C,
copy last phrase spoken to the clipboard. And the second most useful
command I tend to use is the move mouse cursor to voiceover cursor with VO
Command F5. I tend to use that for working around voiceover issues with
the contextual menus or a stubborn button that won't activate. So, at that
point I will use the mouse button like any sighted user would.

Another fun game to play is to enable keyboard help, with VO K, and then
just hit keys with the VO controls down to hear what they do. Be sure to
 use all the modifier combinations.

And the other important thing is to ask the list if there is an easier way
to do something that annoys you. Odds are, there probably is, and you'll
 get the answer here.

 Enjoy.

sharing activities?

2014-08-26 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

Now that I'm using activities more, I'm loving the value they have in
increasing my productivity in certain things. This got me to thinking. It's
easy enough for me to tell somebody how to create an activity if i find one
particularly useful, but it would be nice if I could just give them a file and
let them have all of the activities I use if our needs align enough for that to
be a viable thing.

Is sharing activities even possible? Or should I just guide people through the
steps to recreate my activities if they wish to.

Thanks.

Best,

-John

Re: Truly bizarre problems; can't figure out if it's my MacBook, my iPhone, or Both

Christine:

I have no idea what's going on here, exactly. I've never seen an issue like
this before. However, I'd suspect the issue is primarily an iPhone issue.
That's where I'd start with for repairs, at least. I would take the mac with

can, but making the appointment an iPhone appointment should be sufficient as

question about restoring iPhone from iTunes

2014-09-14 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

Quite recently, today in fact, I had opportunity to DFU my phone. As you may
be aware, this resets the phone to factory defaults, installs the current
public version of iOS, and makes you restore the phone from a backup. No
problem, I backed up today before this became an issue, so all was good.
However, when I restored, all of my folders came over, contents exactly where
they should be, but I had 4 pages of apps instead of the 2 I had when I made
the backup. It turns out the iTunes library has a bunch of apps I installed
previously on my phone but have since uninstalled. So once the backup was
restored, I was then also given all of the apps I didn't want on my phone any
more.

Is there a way to make iTunes only restore the apps in a particular backup? I
could have restored from iCloud and just had the apps that were on my phone,
but this method seemed like it was going to be faster and it probably was.
However, deleting 2 pages worth of apps wasn't how I wanted to spend a few
minutes of my time this afternoon.

Thanks in advance for any help/input.

Best,

-John

some of my VO settings were lost. Help?

2014-09-20 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I had to take my mac in recently for a genius bar appointment. It was
necessary to erase my computer and start from scratch. I had a time machine
backup, so I thought all was good. I was wrong!! Most things came over
perfectly fine, except some random voiceover settings.

Whenever I arrow through the dock, or a list of files/folders, voiceover
announces 1 of 12, 5 of 66, etc. It never used to do this. I'm sure I changed
it somewhere, but can't for the life of me recall how I got voiceover to stop
making these announcements.

Also, the 3 message colappsed disclosure triangle message is back in mail, even
though I've set verbosity to high. Am I missing a step somewhere?

Additionally, though this isn't a voiceover specific thing, my notification
center preferences don't seem to have been retained from the backup, for some
reason.

Thanks in advance.

Re: yorufukurou question

2011-07-18 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hello:

I often find that VO and YoruFukurou don't always work in perfect sync. It is,
therefore, sometimes necessary to command tab out of and back into YoruFukurou
in order for the drawer contents to accurately reflect what you should be
seeing.

If anyone knows a way around this oddity, that'd be great.

screen curtain

Hello!

I enable my screen curtain because A: I don't like people being able to look
over my shoulder while I'm using my computer, and B: I assume that it saves a
bit of battery power. However, I was under the impression that the screen

to have to restart the screen curtain each time you restart voiceover/the

quicknav yielded no results. Trying to download the file gave me an HTML file.

Advice? Tips/tricks for dealing with CAPTCHAs?

VMWare issue

2010-07-30 Thread John D . Lipsey
Hi list.

I recently installed VMWare fusion on my MacBook so I can run Windows XP if I
ever need to. Installing VMWare was easy enough. I then located an XP install
CD in my basement. I'm not sure how long we've had it kicking around here, but
from all I could tell the disk was in working order.

I inserted the Disk and brought up Fusion. It seemed to be working perfectly
until I hit save. Then the CD drive did its thing for a minute before VMWare
yelled at me that there was no bootable media detected.

Help?

Re: VMWare issue

2010-07-31 Thread John D. Lipsey
It's a full install. I tripple-checked that before I even tried running Fusion.

This problem is weird, and as far as I know nobody's been able to duplicate it.

mail and contacts

2010-08-02 Thread John D. Lipsey
I'm confused!

I want to add someone who sent me an email to my address book, but I've brought
up the context menu for the message and looked in all of the menus on the menu
bar, and I can't seem to find an option to do this. So I thought, maybe
replying to a message will create a new contact in my address book, but the
only contact cards in my address book are for myself and Apple. Which brings
up another question... how do I import the contacts from my IPhone into my
MacBook's address book?

Done with questions for now.

VMWare, Skype and a soundcard issue

2010-08-15 Thread John D . Lipsey
Hi all,

I'm running VMWare fusion 3.1.1, I believe it is, but this problem was
occurring even with my older version of Fusion. I'm running Windows XP on the
virtual machine, if that matters.

I've tested several hypotheses, and have reached the conclusion that Skype is
my culprit. Here's the problem.

If I'm running fusion, and am on Skype with someone on my mac side, every once
in a while the sound card starts making funny sounds. This lasts for a few
seconds before all of the sound is completely gone. I can fix the issue by
simply putting my computer to sleep and then bringing it back up, but this will
naturally kill anything I may be doing on the windows side. This happens
regardless of whether VoiceOver is on or not, so it has to be some kind of
issue between Skype's using the sound-card and windows also trying to use the
sound card. I think.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Workarounds?

navigating a webpage by headers, pre-snow leopard

2010-08-17 Thread John D . Lipsey
Hello,

I'm volunteering at a highschool that uses macs. However, they're running OS
10.5.8, I think.

Using Snow Leopard has spoiled me, because I love using quicknav. Some
websites I use at work are more efficient to navigate via headers. This is
easy as pie with quicknav, but I can't for the life of me figure out a
pre-quicknav command for moving to next and previous headers. Help?

downloading/reading bookshare books

2010-08-29 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all,

I just tried to grab a book from bookshare.org using webkit. The zip file
downloaded just fine, but I can't seem to get a password prompt when I go to
unzip the file. It just tells me that it failed to extract.

Also, when I used windows I would just open the .xml file from daisy books in
IE and read them that way. Can I open them with webkit/safari and read them
the same way?

Thanks in advance for any assistance in this matter.

Re: MacBook VoiceOver and DVD player question

It works on my end. I'd check to make sure quicknav wasn't on. As long as

navigon or apple maps?

2013-10-03 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

Just wanted to get some thoughts on this. I have, and use, both Apple's
built-in Maps and Navigon. I'm not really leaning towards one over the other
at present, so thought I'd get some additional input.

Which do you prefer, and why? Is one better in certain situations, IE driving,
than the other?

Ever curious one here. And thanks in advance!

Re: Facebook chat

2013-04-25 Thread John D. Lipsey
On miranda in windows, and Adium on Mac, both only see a couple of contacts
online on FB chat for me. I know there should be more, but can't see them.
Also, I don't have Skype link to Facebook, as I turned down that option when

Skype and FB still no go

2013-04-25 Thread John D . Lipsey
Hi all:

I got Skype connected to my facebook account, but it still only shows 1 person
online from facebook if I'm lucky. Consulting the mobile site tells me I should
have at least 50 people online. I'm not sure what facebook broke, but my
Skype, Adium and Miranda are now all unable to accurately show my facebook
contact list.

I'm frustrated, but it's still good to know I'm not alone.

Here's hoping we get a fix of some kind soon. Though I do wonder why this seems
to effect some of us but not all.

still no FB chat for me

2013-04-27 Thread John D. Lipsey
I've updated Adium, and I still have no better luck with facebook chat than
I've been having all week. I'm about ready to give up on this, but I refuse to
bow to Facebook and just use the website for chatting when adium presents a
much cleaner, simpler interface.

If anyone did anything before it just started working again, I'd be delighted
to know what that was.

Thanks in advance.

best antivirus for mac?

2012-10-19 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

I've been nomail on the list for absolute ages, and so if the topic came up in
a recent thread I apologize.

I want to put some antivirus software on my mac. Some would say that viruses
are less likely to infect my mac, but I say I'd rather be prepared. I want
something that's awesome at doing its job and is accessible with VO. 100
percent accessibility is ideal, but if it has some things that are strange but
I can still do what I need to do so the protection of my computer is assured
then I'm happy.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

selecting a part of a track in amadeus pro

2010-10-08 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

Back in the days of windows, I used goldwave for all my audio editing needs.
Now I'm plunging into Amadeus pro. One of the things I loved about goldwave
was how easy it was to select part of a track for copying/pasting, deleting,
etc. I could just use my left and right brackets and bam, start and end
markers were placed around the portion of the file I wanted selected then I
could only work with that part of the file. Is this able to somehow be
accomplished in amadeus pro? Wow, my grammar sucks! :)

Thanks in advance for help.

CD burning options on the Mac and another Amadeus question

2010-10-09 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I want to burn several audio CD's. What is the best way to go about actually
accomplishing this task? Someone suggested ITunes, but even if this is an
option I don't really want to do that. I don't want to have to import the
songs into my ITunes library, burn them, and then have to remove them again
later. I want to just keep everything on my external.

Also, has anyone successfully performed batch processing with Amadeus? AS I
recall, it wants you to drag and drop files to add to the batch. Another work
around, or step by step instructions on how to accomplish this task would be
appreciated. Though if I can avoid dragging stuff around I'd prefer that.

Thanks again all for the help. Soon I plan on asking less and helping more. :)

Silly question ahead!!

How does one rout the VO cursor to a particular area? I think I knew this at
one point, but have forgotten it as I don't tend to use it very often.

Re: Can keyboard only navigation ever be...

2010-10-10 Thread John D. Lipsey
Quicknav allows you to use one hand. I almost never turn quicknav off, unless
I'm working in a program where I need my arrow keys to function as arrow keys,
such as Amadeus Pro. Quicknav is kind of like locking the VO keys, but it only
applies to the arrow keys, enabling you to still enter text in edit fields and
such.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

last question of the day converting avi to ogg?

2010-10-10 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I have several avi files that I'd like to convert to ogg, hence my question
earlier about batch processing. However, it appears that Amadeus won't open
avi files. Therefore, I'd like some recommendations of alternatives.
Preferably something that will do batch processing, but that's not entirely
necessary... I can convert each file one at a time if I must, but there are
over 40 of them.

Thanks again.

concerning recent skype conversations

2010-10-27 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I'm not particularly following many threads on the list at present, but the
issue of skype accessibility seems to have cropped up a bit here and there.
This has me curious. I am, to my knowledge, running the latest version of
skype, and not having any issues with it. What accessibility issues are you
noticing? Are these issues before or after you log into skype itself?

Sorry if this was all brought up before, and if those of you with issues wish
to write me off-list, that's fine too.

Thanks.

greyhound, webkit/safari, and voiceover: oh my!

2010-11-10 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

I was just wondering if anyone's used the greyhound website to buy tickets with
webkit and voiceover? I tried it last night. It's useable, but I also found

it was after midnight and I was tired, however. :)

If anyone has any tips/tricks for maximizing my efficiency with greyhound's
website, I'd appreciate them.

Take care.

adium and facebook chat

2010-11-24 Thread John D. Lipsey

As of last night, Adium refuses to work properly with facebook chat. It says
I'm connected to facebook chat, but none of my contacts show up in my online
list. However, if someone writes me a message, they'll show up. They show up
forever, though. Even if I know they're no longer online it still shows them
as online until I restart Adium.

Thoughts?

upgrading ram and VM fusion

2011-08-27 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

Firstly, this is part of a long-term plan to go into broadcasting. It's just
going to be easier, as far as I can tell, to broadcast on a virtual machine.

My macbook has just the base 2 gigs of RAM. I want 4, as I believe that'ss the
most it can support. So, firstly, is it worth paying to have someone install
the RAM for me? I don't want to break my mac, obviously, but if it's going to
be scary expensive I could probably find a techy friend to do it for me.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, how do I tell fusion to use more ram
than its default? After all, there's no sense in upgrading the ram and then
letting fusion use its default amount of memory.

Thanks in advance, guys.

ITunes not properly updating podcasts

2011-01-09 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

I've now had this happen twice. For reasons I can't figure out, ITunes all of
a sudden stops updating my podcasts. The only reason I know this is because I
have one hourly news and one or two daily podcasts that haven't updated in the
last several days. The only way I've found to fix this is to unsubscribe and
resubscribe to all of my podcasts.

Anybody know why this keeps happening?

I'm seriously considering looking into alternatives to ITunes for my podcasts,
seeing as I never sync them with my phone anyway and just listen to them
locally. So, if this problem continues and nobody knows how to fix it, I'm
also open to any alternative podcatchers anyone can suggest.

TIA,

-John

Re: first impressions of the new Skype

Ray:

To read someone's profile, you perform the following steps.

Interact with the table that shows your contacts. Then, arrow to the contact
you want. While still interacting with the table, bring up the context menu
for the contact you're interested in with VO-Shift-M. Then, arrow to the item
that says "view profile". I think that's what it says, anyway.

Hope that helps.

I'm still trying to figure out how to turn on/off my webcam while within a
call. I used to be able to do it in the current non-beta version of skype, but
havne't found any way to do this from the beta.

Take care.

adium and adding contacts?

2011-02-06 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys:

I've been using Adium forever, well since I got my mac, and am over all happy
with it. Recently, I've tried to add three people to MSN messenger. One with
a hotmail, and two with non-SN addresses. That is they're not associated with
hotmail, live.com, etc. In all three cases, I was unable to add them. One of
them was able to add me, but the others weren't. All I know for sure is I'm
not the only person having this issue. One of the people I'm trying to add is
using Miranda on a windows machine. I'm not sure if that would make a
difference or not, but just figured I'd throw it out there.

Any assistance in this matter would be awesome.
Thanks.

Re: adium and adding contacts?

2011-02-06 Thread John D. Lipsey
I went to add contact, chose msn, and entered the email address. I then got
the send authorization request thing, or whatever that says. I then received
the following:

Unable to add the buddy because the username is invalid.
Usernames must be valid email addresses.

That's all I get.

getting started with navigon

2011-02-11 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I just purchased navigon. I want to explore the app for myself, and have no
specific questions at the moment. But if anyone has any generally useful
tips/tricks, or a basic kind of getting started guide, VO specific would be
nice but not mandatory, that'd be awesome.

I plan on taking it out into the city and playing with it's full functionality
tomorrow. After all, within these four walls, I can only do so much.

TIA for any suggestions.

Blinkx remote?

2011-03-13 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

Has anyone ever used Blinkx Remote? I find the majority of its interface
fairly self-explanatory, but I'm about to bang my head into a wall in
frustration at one thing in particular.

Selecting a TV show, season and episode is very straight forward. Then,
Blinkxs asks me where I want to watch the episode. I pick a website, then the
fun starts. A blinkx page loads that tells me I'm about to visit a third-party
site. It then tells me to click continue, or proceed, or... whatever it calls
it. I can't for the life of me get voiceover to show me this text that's
clickable or a link or button. I'm sure it's there on the page, or I wouldn't
be asked to click it, but I'm not seeing it. I can't click on the word
"continue" in the text box that says to click it, and a voiceover find yields
no other instances of this text. Tabbing around doesn't show me a button to
click, and... I'm not liking it. The rest of the website/process is terribly
straight forward, so why can't the final step be as well?

TIA for any help.

-John

I broke click to flash!

2011-03-23 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys!

I was having issues with click to flash today. Ever since I got home, I would
click on flash videos, then interact with the thing adn click play on click to
flash, and there was no audio. I checked for an update, sure enough there was
one. The update, however, broke click to flash. I now think flash loads
automatically, I can't find a way to stop it, and the play, back 30 seconds
button, etc are no longer visible to voiceover. I'd either like to revert back
to the old version of click to flash, or find some other alternative program.

Thoughts?

Re: Pndora and VO?

Stupid question!

I've installed and labeled the buttons, but... once you interact with stations
table while a station is playing, how the heck do you switch stations?

This is my perplexed face.

Interesting!

Using the track pad doesn't even seem to work for me. This is potentially bad.
