Cameron: I use a program called Adapter. It's done a great job of this in every scenario I've tested it with. Simply do a google search for adapter converter for mac. I think that's how I found it, at least.
One note: The button to start the conversion isn't actually labeled. It's the very last button, directly to the left of a checkbox, which is the bottom most element in the window. The only thing this doesn't do is delete the video files when it's done. Deleting those after is a simple enough task however, unless someone knows of a way to have it convert and delete.
