debconf PO translations for the package elilo
Dear Debian I18N people, The elilo package maintainers recently introduced debconf templates in their package. These templates had minor formatting issues which I reported in #413899. I offerred them to handle a round of translation updates as of this opportunity. There is currently no translation for that package. French is already under work. Please respect the Reply-To: field and send your updated translation to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The deadline for receiving the updated translation is March 23th 23/59UTC. If you have read so far, please find the POT file in attachement. (forw) Google Summer of Code 2007 - mentors and project ideas wanted
Shall we propose an i18n project again? Some areas in i18n stuff could certainly benefit from an i18n project. Last year's project from Gintautas Miliauskas achieved some work for Pootle, but some drawback has been that it apparently slightly diverged from the expectations of the Wordforge project peopleand therefore did not lead to progress in Pootle, nor much progress for Debian. If we propose something, we should probably propose something more closely realted to Debian. I would say that work around the DDTP integration in the *existing* Pootle server could be a way to go. Others, ideas ? We will also need people to *mentor* such project. - Forwarded message from Steve McIntyre <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2007 00:51:30 + From: Steve McIntyre <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: debian-devel-announce@lists.debian.org Subject: Google Summer of Code 2007 - mentors and project ideas wanted Reply-To: debian-project@lists.debian.org X-Mailing-List: X-CRM114-Status: Good ( pR: 16.1950 ) [ Please respect the Reply-To and discuss things on debian-project. ] The Google Summer of Code is running again this year[1]. Last year we started ten projects with students, and six of them ran to completion[2], providing us with new useful code. This year, we're applying again for Debian to be a mentoring organisation. With luck, we'll get some enthusiastic new developers working for us, paid full time by Google for the duration of the summer. We will hear in the next few days whether or not Debian has been accepted; in the meantime, we need to get working. Admins == Our two current admins are Steve McIntyre <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and Stefano Zacchiroli <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; if last year is anything to go by, we'll probably add more admins later once the programme is up and running. Admins are responsible for approving mentors and students. Mentors and ideas = At this point, we have not nominated any specific mentors as part of our application; we expect to add more mentors shortly as people get in touch. If you want to be a mentor, add yourself in the wiki and please also contact Steve and Zack. If you have ideas for projects that you'd like to oversee, please add them to the list in this year's wiki page[3]. As a starting list, we've copied in the list of projects from this time last year already. To be a mentor, you will need to have a Google account. If you don't have one already, that would be a useful thing to set up in advance. Once we know the procedure for signing up mentors, we will pass on the details to those interested. Discussion == Please find us on the debian-project mailing list or irc.debian.org:#debian-soc if there's anything you need to discuss with us. We will probably put a SVN or equivalent server between Pootle and maintainers, precisely for that reason. I'm currently in the process of using the SVN repository for the debian-l10n project, exactly for that purpose. Then Pootle could be using this SVN as the reference for its files with translators using either Pootle or the SVN directly, depending on their organisation needs. Not sure that *this* fits a possible GSOC project. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

While this seems doable for Pootle, I doubt that the SVN solution scales very well. I think that we will be able to authorize *one* coordinator per language for direct SVN commit. Pootle will be more simple to manage to authorisations and rights. We will certainly identify one person as the general coordinator for each language. This person will be able to delegate in Pootle but only this person will have direct SVN commit access. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Please be prepared for an update to samba package debconf templates
The samba package maintainers will add a new debconf template to the package pretty soon. Don't hit them with a cluebat, I am one of them and another one is one of our release managers...:-) This new template is really needed to warn users about an important issue they could face while upgrading from sarge (and *many* samba installations use sarge). A call for updates is likely to come pretty soon. Please be ready for it. It will add 2 strings made of 4-5 sentences. A very quick update for all supported languages will be needed...and there are 42 supported languages..:-) -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

This is maybe not exactly the right moment, as the translation update has started, but a small review of the original templates file could be a good idea, indeed. That can be done by requesting for this in the debian-l10n-english mailing list. Bu, again, this should be done *after* etch release. We are very close to it now and certainly cannot afford debconf templates changes. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Quoting Dwayne Bailey ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): > Just out of curiosity, did you at all think of Bazaar? Why I ask is > that that seems like it would make an easier integration. Plus since From a user point of view, but that may be less relevant, bazaar is much less easy to integrate and understand than non distributed CVS live Subversion. So, it actually depends on who will interact with the VCS besides Pootle. Fomr the Debian point of view, I see the intermediate VCS as a place to store material that both depends on translators and package maintainers (e.g. debconf stuff, debian-installer stuff, native Debian packages translations). So, not only Pootle would be the one accessing to the material and the VCS. Our maintainers will need a way to access an update the material while they're developing their packages, so probably as a method outside Pootle...hence the VCS. They could probably accomodate a distributed VCSthough I doubt it would be easy for all of them. That would add yet another step to a quite complicated learning curve for package maintenance. On the translators side, we could of course accomodate this if we assume that translators accessing the translation material would be very few, mostly team coordinators. But, here again, part from the very few that would be able to cope with bzr, I suspect that the step would be pretty high. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hmm, yes that's right. I never thought about the fact that builds are desynchronised. So, if we go this way, we would have to find a method to prevent l10n updates to occur when packages are built by the build daemonsthat might be very tricky. The only other option I see would be l10n downloads to occur only when maintainers explicitely set a given variable in .devscripts or so. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Otherwise, it's pretty likely that some translators and|or teams *will* work on them anyway, whicch would be the waste of time you describe. Indeed, I fail to see why stabilizing templates should take such a long time or even take time at all. Either you think that users have to be prompted through debconf and then you write templates and you try to write them carefully from the beginning.or you don't think so and then you don't use debconf templates...:-) Anyway, we certainly can't interfere with your development model. No. The l10n stats script could not connect to ftp.debian.org to retrieve packages. As a consequence, and because such errors are currently badly handled in the script, it assumed that translations were removed, which is obviously not correct.. So, don't worry, nothing bad happened to D-I related translations. Indeed ALL translators subscribed to the D-I l10n monitoring robot did receive these notifications. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

As the de facto l-c maintainer for a while, I completely agree with Frans comments. I did not push very hard for l-c support for two basic reasons: - the package being one big hack to circumvent the fact that dealing properly with localized environments was not done by several packages in sarge - I don't understand the code and noone popped up to continue maintaining the package As Frans explained, the remaining bits not done by l-c are not deeply affecting desktop systems users, so I don't really see a need to document this in the release notes. IMHO, l-c should completely be dropped out from unstable. In the future, when we identify l10n/i18n releated things that need to bo configured according to the system locale, we should work on them with package maintainers, not circumvent the problem. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I think we of course need to point that there are few chances for this to go in etch. Indeed, this is something we should work on for the future when languages are definitely activated in D-I: we should encourage translators to propose language tasks for their languages. [D-I] Moving on again on l10n
Things will soon start to move on again for D-I and D-I related localisation (http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/l10n-stats). As D-I RC2 has been released, the D-I trunk is now reopened for changes (still discussed with Frans, certainly) so don't be surprised if your language stats come under 100%. For level 1 there is currently no sign for that, but that happened yesterday for level 2, after I added a Malayalam task to tasksel. Aptitude (level 5) will also be changed for one string pretty soon and one can expect changes for dpkg (level 5), cupsys (level 3) and xorg (level 3). The kdm package is one of the binary packages built by the kdebase package. When calling for debconf templates translations, we always refer to *source* packages, never binary packages. Most of the translation and template has indeed been copies from the xdm package templates (including s/xdm/kdm), which explains why the translation is nearly complete (only one fuzzy). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

> I have just looked at what strings are untranslated, and quite a few of > them are in the description of the upgrade procedure. IMO that makes the > Romanian translation unsuitable for inclusion. I really fail to see the rationale here. Allowing partial translations to be used is precisely the purpose of po4a. When only 25 strings are untranslated out of 626, that means that the document will have a few parts in English. So, well, that's not perfect but readers will still have the information as handy as they would if the Romanian translation just doesn't exist. So, really, would it be me, I would have made an exception and activated Romanian at that point. In case we want to avoid the user's surprise, we could maybe imagine having po4a adding a disclaimer at the beginning of the generated translated file when it is generated from an incomplete PO file. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Planned changes to D-I "level 1" translation framework
I plan some changes to the D-I translation framework. The sarge->etch release cycle showed that giving translators a good way to plan their work would be much appreciated. The current master file for all D-I packages has 1540 strings, which is huge. My proposal is to split this out in 2 or more "sublevels" (the plan is currently to use two levels): - the first one would include all packages use in "standard" installation for "common" architectures - the other one would include the remaining packages "standard" and "common" are to be defined. Up to now, "common" means i386 and amd64. The current split gives 837 strings in sublevel1 and 721 in sublevel2 (some strings are common to both sublevels). The lists of packages in the 2 sublevels are in the files named packages_list_sublevel1 and packages_list_sublevel2 in packages/po in the D-I SVN. When strings are common to different sublevels, the translations do "down" from the the lowermost sublevel (ie the one with the lowest number) to the uppermost one, to avoid duplicate work and inconsistencies. Please comment about this plan (which has already been discussed with Frans but may need improvements). Please DO NOT update files in sublevel1 and sublevel2 yet as your changes would be lost. The switch to this new model will be announced when it is ready. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

The SVN logs are already > hardly readable because of all the l10n-sync commits. The only additionnal commits from l10n-sync should occur when the sublevel 2 files will be updated from sublevel 1 strings if strings that are common to both files are modified in sublevel 1. Commits to the individual packages should not change as the files will be updated at each run from either the sublevel1 or sublevel2 files. I just reduced the number of l10n-sync runs to one daily only (we had two runs a day in the recent months). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Right? > Only inofficial builds containing partial translations would profit > from the split. My intent was not triggering a discussion about the language activation criteria now. But I guess we won't escape from it. That discussion should happen and a mistake we made for etch was not having it before the release was getting closer. My personal opinion is that we should activate a language when sublevel 1 is completewhile the final D-I release should only keep those languages that have *both* sublevels activated. This is more or less what we did for etcheven if the criteria for activating languages was not really precise. Activating early allows for more testing (until someone figures out how to make daily builds from packages built from the SVN and not from uploaded packages). One problem we have with new languages is the lack of real testing, because translations only reach the arhive when the packages are rebuilt, which only happens when a beta/RC release is planned. We really should try to improve this for lenny. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: Status of the belocs-locales-{bin,data} packages
(keeping belocs-locales-* packages) > Does anybody want to maintain these packages? > Are there some languages which really need them? Not in D-I supported packages. I think that your question should include the glibc maintainers, however I share your feelings. There is no point in maintaining belocs-* packages nowunless it again becomes difficult to include new locales in glibc. An argument to keep belocs was that glibc is usually frozen very early and it then becomes hard to add new locales. If belocs is abandoned, we should maybe ask for freeze exceptions to add new locales in glibc for the lenny freeze stage. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Review in progress for postfix debconf templates
The debian-l10n-english team will soon begin the review of the debconf templates for this package. This increases the probability for changes to the templates. As a consequence, translation work on this package's templates is discouraged. It would even make the reviewer work more complicated. As usual, this list will be notified when the review has been completed, opening the opportunity for translators to work on the templates translations. Debian translators: please take care to report translation udpates against the correct package(s)
(this mail is BCC'ed to the original bug reporter who made the mistake and the translation coordinator for the relevant language, but the problem I want to point here is becoming quite common and happens for many translation teams and translators) > * #419524: [INTL:ml] Updated Malayalam debconf template translation of > ALSA > Package: alsa-driver_1.0.13-5; Severity: wishlist; Reported by: >^^^ > ; Tags: l10n, patch. > * #419526: [INTL:ml] Updated Malayalam debconf template translation of > APACHE > Package: apache_1.3.34-4.1; Severity: wishlist; Reported by: >^^ > ; Tags: l10n, patch. > * #419527: [INTL:ml] Updated Malayalam debconf template > translation of Mplayer > Package: mplayer_1.0~rc1-13; Severity: wishlist; Reported by: > ; Tags: l10n, patch. I would like to bring the attention of all Debian translators on the way you report debconf translation updates and more generally all translation updates related to a given package. Please note that the package against which you should report the debconf translation update is the *source package*. The name you should use is the NAME OF THE PACKAGE ALONE, not the package-version combination, not a funny name like "foo_debian_po_tlh.po". It is deeply suggested that you use the reportbug or reportbug-ng utilities. In case you can't do so (for instance if you use another operating system), you can report bugs by sending a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] *with the following lines as first lines in the mail body*: Package: foo Tags: l10n patch Severity: wishlist "foo" *MUST* be *ONLY* the package name, as said above. More documentation about the way to report bugs against Debian package may be found at http://bugs.debian.org. The Debian Installer i18n doc also gives hints which are more targeted at translation work: http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/i18n-doc/ape.html Any misdirected bug has to be manually processed by the Debian QA team members who have to figure out which package the translation is related to and then reassign the bug to this package. Of course, the time spent in this is not spent on other more productive tasks. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Review in progress for radiusd-livingston debconf templates
The debian-l10n-english team will soon begin the review of the debconf templates for this package. This increases the probability for changes to the templates. As a consequence, translation work on this package's templates is discouraged. It would even make the reviewer work more complicated. As usual, this list will be notified when the review has been completed, opening the opportunity for translators to work on the templates translations. Thanks for your cooperation. (additional note: please note that I consider the debconf notes in this package as debconf abuse which will be reported as a bug. However, given that the maintainer disagree, we will anyway conduct the rewrite process) -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Changes to Debian Installer "level 2" files: adding eject
D-I will now use a small udeb package built from the eject package to eject the CD|DVD at the end of the installation process, before the reboot. This udeb includes a menu title and therefore needs translation. As this package is not maintained by the D-I team, it pertains to what we call "level 2". Therefore, I added the package to the list of packages in level 2 in the statistics pages and in the D-I documentation. The menu title was already translated for a few packages. Translators who are subscribed to the notification robot already received a notice in case their language is not included yet. The POT file is available at http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/l10n-stats/level2/POT/eject_debian_po.pot Please report translations in the BTS as *debconf* translations of the eject package. I will then commit them to the package development CVS, hosted by Frank Lichtenheld. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
