If you'd like to experiment with mpeg2enc's myriad of options without baby sitting your computer, you can use this small set of scripts to automate testing and measuring. After a test, you're left with a CSV file ready for your favorite charting program (and you can make images like http://vidprofile.berlios.de/fig/qb-chart.png). Compare things like output file size, encoding time, and PSNR.
