This is not an excuse for any earlier comments and is not gender specific but
an example of something that I have noticed myself doing lately which seems
to relate to parts of this conversation thread.

People read / hear the same text but read what they want to read / hear it in
a way that is unique to them.

Take for example the Java API - there have been a couple of times
when reading this that I have come away with an idea that was incorrect
and later when I had this clarrified I found that it was becuase I was
assuming / reading into it that a command worked in a certain way.

Yet when it was explained in different words the meaning became crystal
 clear!

Just something I've caught myself doing :).
