Hi folks
I am having some trouble getting VNC to run as a service on SuSE 7.3. I have
succesfully done this before on Solaris, and I have followed the
instructions in Sourcecode Corner (Jeff Vincent's handy guide) but to no
avail.
If I manually start vncserver, and telnet to port 5901 I get the

As far as I know there isn't an active firewall. I certainly haven't
installed one, but who knows what that handy installer did for me? So,
stupid question but, how can I tell for sure?
nb. SuSE-Intel.

Sorry, I don't have any active Suse around to see details. What do `ipchains
-L` say? How about `/etc/rc.d/init.d/ipchains status`.
Those are some basic firewalling commands. Search the howtos and manual
pages for details.

Hi Alex,
sorry for the late answer, the mailserver was down for 3 days ...!
the rejection results after a waiting period of several minutes (3-4).
In the task bar the icon shows the server running. And the task manager shows
a running WinVNC.exe process. I tried several times uninstalling and new

I have found the problem; the line in inetd.conf read:
vnc-800x600x24 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/local/bin/Xvnc -inetd -query
-localhost -once -geometry 800x600 -depth 24
Now it says

I am trying to run mozilla inside vnc without much success. When I specify a
depth of 24 Xvnc core dumps when mozilla starts up. A depth of 8 works fine
(but is ugly). Here is the stack back trace of Xvnc:

Easy: Do
If you happen to run some Compaq servers, have a look at the Remote
Management http://www.compaq.com/manage/remotemgmt.html boards. I happen to
work with the Remote Insight Board
(http://www.compaq.com/manage/remote-lightsout.html). It provides something
similar as VNC does. Some of the advantage

I've heard nothing else about the service dependencies concept from anyone;
that's one of the reasons why I posted the comments about forced shutdowns.
It isn't pretty from a Windows perspective, but it is an immediate solution
that will work for NT and Win2K users.

vncsnapshot (http://vncsnapshot.sourceforge.net) is based on TightVNC.
I used TightVNC 1.2.2 as the base. However, after inspecting the new version

The problem is the admins want to see what has hung, and because of this
they are switching to PC Anywhere which does not have the problem.
For VNC to be taken seriously by corporate IT this has to be addressed so
it works like PC Anywhere where it is the last service to shutdown.

The problem needs to be addressed by the VNC developers, if PC Anywhere can
do it, I don't see any reason why VNC can't.
The shutdown tools are OK, but you still can't see what is happening during
the shutdown process. PC Anywhere is the last service to shutdown, so you
can actually stay connect
Its in vnchooks.dll. the function is defined in vnchooks.cpp.
This allow hooking into window message loop and getting the screen update

Yes, I am kind of disapointed that this problem has not been taken care of.
VNC needs the same functionality as PC Anywhere where a remote shutdown is
concerned.
VNC needs to shutdown last so you can observe the shutdown and act on
problems as they occur.

Hi everyone,
I'm having a heck of a time getting VNC viewer (running on any of my
Windows98 clients) to display my KDE desktop on my FreeBSD machine.
It displays twm just fine, but not KDE.
I've followed the steps outlined at
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/UTCS/online-docs/Xvnc_docs/faq.html
Q21.
This is exactly the reasoning behind the argument that VNC should include
certain extra functionality on Windows platforms.
The issue is not a problem with VNC; it's a problem with the underlying OS
if I understand it correctly. For corporate use, however, the point is not
"who is at fault?" but

I am fond of the Win2VNC program by Fredrik Hubinette. If I use TightVNC,
closing the Win2VNC program crashes the TightVNC server. This happens if I

Tim, I had about the same problem, but with Gnome. I went to the user
home directory (user name under which vncserver was run). You should find
a ".vnc" subdirectory (ie hidden) under that, and in there an xstartup
file. Edit that xstartup file. Take out the reference to twm and insert

You can always do a logoff of a NT/2K machine first and then do a shutdown.
This would assure no user level processes are hanging. If it's a system
service that is hanging, then you are kind'a SOL. You could create a batch

That sounds very odd indeed.
Next thing to check would be the event log; try to see if there are any odd
events showing up.
The strange thing is that you should get a rejection very quickly over a
local LAN. What I am concerned about is that you may have significant other
issues with your netw
